Earle was a very active member with ourDetachment and the Department of PA MCL. He held thepost of Commandant and longtime ROTC/AmericanismChairman of our own Smedley Butler Detachment. Earle alsoserved as District One Vice Commandant, Chapel of FourChaplains Chairperson, and countless other positions.In 2005 Earle was presented with the Detachment’sCommandant award and in 2009 the Marine of the Yearaward. He was also active in the marksmanship program andrecruiting new members. I will always remember Earle as theCommandant that swore me in as a new member (2009) andasking me to take the Sgt-of-Arms position when Jim Rossstepped down. Please keep Earle and his family in yourthoughts.July was our last general meeting at the KOC. Our new homefor now will be the American Legion Post 805, 2340 WestChester Pike Broomall.INSIDE THIS ISSUEWe are also only going to meet once a month starting 3August (no July staff meeting). Both meetings will nowbe the first Tuesday of the month. The Staff Meeting willstart at 1800 and the General Meeting will start at 1930.Hope to see you there.Doug Forsythe, District One Vice Commandant waspresent at our meeting to award the Detachment and DanLuty (webmaster) Certificates of Appreciation andCertificates of Participation for both the Scuttlebutt andWebmaster/Website. Congratulations to everyone who isinvolved with publishing the Scuttlebutt.I want to thank Steve Kusner for taking the openDirector’s position. We do have other positions available,and I will remind members during our meetings.I also want to thank everyone who made the parades onJuly 4th weekend. Wayne Williams and Bob Spano alongwith others made these events run smoothly. It was alsogood to see Joe Beal back in action after a brief scare.Lastly, we not only lost three very active members but alsogood friends this past month. Butler Detachment #741Marine Corps LeagueGeneral Meeting Minutes – 6 July 2021Commandant: Commandant Bud Davis opened the meeting at 1930and the regular opening ceremonies were conducted. Officers presentwere Commandant Bud Davis, Senior Vice CommandantDominick Mattioni, Junior Vice Commandant Jerry McGuckin, JudgeAdvocate Dominic D’Allessandro, Paymaster Bob Spano, AdjutantJim Flynn, Chaplain Chris Bush, Sergeant-at-Arms Joe Beal, ServiceOfficer Jim Herbst, Directors Bill Kinney and Steve Kusner, and Jr.Past Commandant Jim Flynn. Also in attendance was District OneVice Commandant Doug Forsythe.Minutes: Bill Kinney made a motion that we accept the minutes of 1June 2021 general meeting. Jim Herbst seconded the motion and themotion passed.Officer Reports:Adjutant: Jim Flynn read several thank you notes from Marine CorpsLeague Scholarship recipients. He also read thank you notes fromcharitable organizations that the detachment has donated to, as well asthank you letters from families that our Honor Guard participated in atVeteran’s funerals.Senior Vice Commandant: Dominick Mattioni made a motion tocancel the annual summer picnic due to trouble finding a location andscheduling problems. Jim Flynn seconded the motion and the motionpassed.Junior Vice Commandant: Jerry McGuckin said that our HuhoCampaign is going very well. He mentioned that he was able to secureseveral more dates at the West Chester Shop Rite. He thanked themembers for their participation in this program.Paymaster: Bob Spano provided the Paymaster’s report reviewingincome and disbursements for the month. He reminded members thatannual dues are due in August. Jim Herbst made a motion that weaccept the Paymaster’s report. Joe Conigliaro seconded the motionand the motion passed.Judge Advocate: Dominic D’Alessandro informed the members thathe was able to have the retired flags burned at the Chester incinerator.He said he is still looking for a more suitable location to burn retiredflags.Sgt-at-Arms: Joe Beal thanked the members who reached out duringhis recent health issues and said he’s recovering well and ready to getback in action.Chaplain: Chris Bush gave updates on sick members he’s spokenwith and visited. He also mentioned the passing of longtime activemembers Con McGinley, Paul Donohue, and Earle Drake.Service Officer: Jim Herbst stated that the Coatesville VAVS willhave a meeting on 15 July 2021 at 1400. He is hoping to getinformation on when we can have our bingo and picnics, possibly inSeptember.Directors: Bill Kinney - spoke about the upcoming Casket FlagCeremony on 11 July 2021. He asked for volunteers to arrive at theVeterans Memorial by 1630. Bill asked the members for updates onthe Toys for Tots program. Bill also announced the date for theAnnual Freedom Dinner will be 18 November 2021 at the SpringfieldCountry Club. Because the dinner had to be cancelled last year, all the2020 Honorees will receive the Award this year. Bill recommendedthat the Detachment buy 2 tables and a full-page ad for the dinner nightat a total cost of 1,850.00. Jim Flynn made a motion that we buy thetables and ad. Jim Herbst seconded the motion and the motion passed.Steve Kusner – no report. Commandant Davis thanked Steve forstepping up and filling the open Director’s post.Ben Sides – absent, no report.Committee Reports:Adopt-a-Highway: Jim Flynn reported that it’s been difficult toschedule the next highway cleanup due to our busy HUHO scheduleand other activities. He said the staff has discussed possibly doing iton a weeknight, but no date has been set.Americanism: no reportAuxiliary Liaison: Chris Bush - no report.Awards: Jim Herbst presented awards to Steve Kusner, MikeMiliken, Paul Ferguson and Gene Trautner for their hard work anddedication.Ceremonies: Dominic D’Alessandro - no report.Color Guard: Wayne Williams thanked members who participatedin the Springfield and Marple Newtown 4th of July parades. He alsomentioned an upcoming event at Drexel Lodge Park on 18 Sept. 2021.This is a concert and barbecue organized by Nick Constantine. He’llhave more details at the next meeting.Communications: John Burfete (absent) no report. CommandantDavis informed the membership that John is having computerproblems and is temporarily unable to forward e-mails to theDetachment. Bob Spano can send batch emails.Honor Guard: Mike Miliken reported that the Honor Guardparticipated in 4 funerals in the month of June bringing the yearly totalto 10.Membership: Jim Herbst said that it is more important than ever thatwe recruit new members, as the Detachment has just suffered the lossof Con McGinley, Paul Donohue, and Earle Drake.Marksmanship: Gene Kern (absent) – no report.Newsletter: Dan Luty (absent) – no report.Property: Bob Spano reported on expenses for trailer inspection andparade supplies.
