2015 ReportMaine GovernmentSummer Internship ProgramEstablished in 1967 by the 103rd Legislature, theMaine Government Summer Internship Program placestalented college students in internship positions inwhich they contribute to state and local governmentand gain meaningful work experience.The program is a full-time, paid work experience, andinterns are considered temporary unclassified stateemployees. The 2015 program ran May 26 to August14. Most interns were placed in the Augusta areathough some positions required travel.To be eligible for the Maine Government SummerInternship Program, a student must currently beenrolled in a Maine college, or be a Maine residentenrolled elsewhere, and have successfully completeda minimum of two years of college. Major Projects of the 2015 State Government InternsFrom May to August, 2015, 35 Maine Government Interns were placed in 11 different state departments. Interns wereassigned to specific projects, and most provided assistance in other activities as well. Some projects required specifictechnical abilities while others entailed a broad range of skills. The list below shows a sampling of interns’ activities. Maintained the department’s social media presence,participated in several marketing projects and createdmaterial for promotion to employers Conducted compliance reviews for Subrecipient Audits(Federal Report Review of Single Audit Act - A-133 OMBCircular) Went to labor housing camps in Aroostook andWashington Counties, spoke with migrant workers abouttheir work, the route they follow every year, and thepeople they travel with Contacted online AP4All program mentors and onlinelearning providers and created a geographic overlay ofthe places in Maine where services are used Updated and copyedited the Deputy Manual and otherMDOL manuals regarding unemployment compensationinsurance Performed an inventory of all the curb ramps on stateroads to see if they were compliant with ADA laws Reviewed income taxpayer accounts, made sure thetaxpayer has filed a tax return and, if not, sent out anotice Updated the Migrant and Seasonal Farmworker ResourceDirectory and the OSHA Housing Standards Checklist Scanned historically valuable books and documents,optimized the digital files using specialized software,and uploaded the files to the Maine State Library digitalrepository Conducted a Rockland Ferry study using ArcGISevaluating parking options and alternatives Wrote a consumer’s booklet (40 pages) about debtcollection and the laws relating to it Completed hydrology requests consisting of determiningthe watershed of a specific bridge or culvert to determinethe proper size of the pipe or bridge Represented injured workers through the workers compensation process after their claim for benefits underthe Act had been denied by the workers’ compensation carrierDrafted several opinion editorials as well as pressreleases to national juvenile justice-related groupsPlayed a substantial role in drafting our 3 Year Plan whichwas submitted to the federal government Conducted Northern Long-Eared bat acoustic surveys anda New England Cottontail camera survey resulting in the first documented use of culverts by lagomorphs in NewEngland Worked to update program information and facilitate the transition from an external website to the CareerCenterwebsite as an informational platform Researched which energy efficiency policies have beenimplemented by all states Conducted research for the Maine elderly housing profileand wrote program brochure informationResearched and wrote research memorandums forongoing cases and drafted legal filings Created and analyzed a data set of surveys given to thehomelessDrafted and distributed press releases, wrote and editedmonthly newsletters, updated material on departmentwebpages Conducted research on the Statewide TransportationImprovement Program, Unified Planning Work Programand Intelligent Transportation Systems Conducted indirect summer fish passage monitoring for35 locations across the state and direct monitoring for3 locations (stream flow, pH, conductivity, temp. data,photos, and observations)Used remote images to determine the mile pointscontaining rumble strips along major highways in Maineand corrected local road lengths in GIS Spatial Managersoftware using aerial viewsConstructed flood inundation maps, using ArcGIS, in theevent of a dam breach - maps are used in EmergencyAction Plans required by state law2015 Maine Government Summer Internship Program2
