GENERAL INFORMATIONTHE UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSASFOR MEDICAL SCIENCESIn fulfilling its educational mission, the six academic units ofUAMS—the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, HealthRelated Professions, and Public Health, and the GraduateSchool—as well as the University Hospital, the Area HealthEducation Centers, the Arkansas Cancer Research Center, theHarvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute, the Donald W.Reynolds Center on Aging, the Myeloma Institute for Researchand Therapy, and the Jackson T. Stephens Spine &Neurosciences Institute—provide the environment andopportunities for students and practitioners alike to learn andmaintain the knowledge and skills they need. Theresearch mission involves the quest for new information, theorganization of known information in new ways, and thesharing of this information with the scientific community.ROLE AND SCOPEThe mission of the University of Arkansas for MedicalSciences is to provide excellent educational opportunitiesfor students of the health care professions in a stimulatingenvironment of basic and clinical research, integrated withthe delivery of superb, comprehensive health care services.The service mission of UAMS is fulfilled by providingcomprehensive health care services to meet both theeducational needs of students and the special health careneeds of the state. As the only academic medical center inArkansas, the unique role of UAMS is to provide servicesrequiring highly specialized personnel and technology. Theseservices are delivered in an interdisciplinary environment toall Arkansans regardless of their ability to pay.The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) isArkansas’ only institution of professional and graduate educationdevoted solely to the health and biological sciences. Firstfounded as a School of Medicine in 1879, UAMS became amedical sciences campus in 1951 with the addition of theCollege of Pharmacy. The College of Nursing was established in1953, and the University Hospital was built in 1956. The Collegeof Health Related Professions was organized as a separate collegewithin UAMS in 1971. The College of Public Health wasestablished in 2001. The Graduate Program was organized as anextension of the Graduate School of the University of Arkansas atFayetteville in 1943, and was approved for independent status bythe Board of Trustees in 1995. The Area Health EducationCenters (AHECs) Program was established in 1973. The ArkansasCancer Research Center (ACRC) was established in 1984. TheHarvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute (HBJEI) was established in1993. The Donald W. Reynolds Center on Aging wasestablished in 1996. Today, UAMS is one of eight campuses ofthe University of Arkansas. It has grown into an academic healthsciences center that encompasses broad aspects of education,research, and service. The institution offers programs thatimprove the physical, economic, and intellectual well-being ofthe citizens of Arkansas.In addition, comprehensive services in health, wellness,and rehabilitation are offered in a statewide context. Theservice mission is enhanced by affiliations with ArkansasChildren’s Hospital (ACH), John L. McClellan MemorialVeterans Administration Medical Center, the ArkansasRehabilitation Institute, the Central Arkansas RadiationTherapy Institute (CARTI), and the Arkansas State Hospital.Additional cooperative programs are offered with otherhospitals and practitioners affiliated with the AHECPrograms. UAMS has a responsibility to provide health careservices in a manner that ensures the long-range financialviability and continued quality of its programs, whileproviding the most cost-effective care for its patients.The UAMS mission encompasses a responsibility to itsalumni and other health care practitioners of Arkansas tohelp them continue to improve their professionalknowledge and skills. All schools and departments offer lifelong learning opportunities as appropriate to their missions.1

The UAMS Library also serves as a resource for all healthprofessionals by maintaining a portfolio of informationservices needed to support their information needs.professional service mission of the College includes theoffering of continuing education courses to practitioners toenhance teaching, administration, and professional skills.UAMS values its role of service to the general welfare of thestate of Arkansas. This service includes action as a partner inscience and health areas to all levels of the educationalsystems of the state. As the leader in health care, theinstitution provides educational programs, consultation, andtechnical advice to other institutions, agencies, and localcommunities for the purpose of improving and maintainingthe health of citizens.Research in the College of Health Related Professionsinvolves the educational process as well as professionalfields. The research mission involves the quest for newinformation which addresses the health and health careeducational needs of the state, and the sharing of thisinformation with the scientific community.The role of UAMS in the economic life of the communityis significant. A major element of the central Arkansaseconomy, the salaries of a highly educated work forcecontribute substantially to the regional economy.The CHRP mission is achieved through the varied offeringsof its departments. The College, the only one of its kind atan academic health science center in Arkansas, has as itsmain role the education of allied health professionals toserve in the health care delivery system in the state. Thespecific educational programs currently offered within theCollege of Health Related Professions are provided by tenacademic departments. They include: Audiology andSpeech Pathology; Dental Hygiene; Dietetics and Nutrition;Emergency Medical Sciences; Genetic Counseling; HealthInformation Management; Imaging and Radiation Sciences(Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Medical Dosimetry,Nuclear Medicine Imaging Sciences, Radiation Therapy,Radiologic Imaging Sciences); Laboratory Sciences(Cytotechnology, Medical Technology); OphthalmicTechnologies; and Respiratory and Surgical Technologies.Programs range from academic requirements of onesemester to programs that require four or more years.Academic awards include the certificate and the associate,bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees. All of these roles combine to support the overallmission of the College.MISSION OF THE COLLEGEThe College of Health Related Professions (CHRP) servesthe state of Arkansas as the primary arm of the University ofArkansas in offering programs that provide education,service, and research in the allied health professions. TheCollege was organized as a separate college within theUniversity of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 1971.In fulfilling its mission, the College of Health RelatedProfessions offers education and training opportunities forstudents of the allied health professions to prepare them asgraduates to assume the roles of the professional. TheCollege curricula coordinate the professional course workwith the arts, humanities, and basic and social sciences intoa total educational experience that emphasizes life-longlearning in the allied health professions.Patient and public health education is an important part ofthe mission of the College of Health Related Professions. Inits public service role, programs in the College renderpatient care services as part of their educational effortsunder the supervision of faculty. THE CAMPUS AND FACILITIESThe University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences campusis located in western Little Rock near War Memorial Park.The four hundred bed University Hospital of Arkansas isthe focal point of the campus. South of the Hospital arethe Ambulatory Care Center, Jeff Banks Student Union,the Education South Building, and the John L. McClellanMemorial Veterans Hospital.The Shorey, Education II, and College of Public HealthBuildings are located to the west, with Barton Institute forMedical Research, the Arkansas Cancer Research Center,the Biomedical Research Center, the Donald W. ADMISSION/ACADEMIC INFORMATIONADMISSION TO THE COLLEGEPrior to their first semester’s registration, all individualsadmitted must submit proof of a physical examinationusing the UAMS Physical Examination Form. Thisexamination is used by the Student and Employee HealthService to verify required immunizations and to establish abaseline for treating illnesses occurring after admission.Individuals who have not decided upon a specific healthcareer may obtain counseling through the Dean’s Office.Telephone (501) 686-5730 for an appointment.Admission to all programs is by formal application only andis selective, as enrollment for each program is limited. Earlyconsideration will be given to those who have completedthe application process by the published early considerationdeadline.
