De-risking Geothermal Drilling: The Mixed Fleet Approach

op SectionBig-rigUnforeseen delay in top sectionActualDelays with the big-rigare expensive owing tothe high day ratePlannedGeothermal drilling is notoriously challenging in the top section of wells: the Predator canvastly reduce expenditure for developers if problems are encountered during drilling.De-risking geothermal drilling: the mixed fleet approach November 20208

Costs of Well Abandonment at 650 m Sub-surface issues may arise whendrilling in volcanic environments. Well abandonment may be the mostrational decision. The Predator makes well abandonmenta more viable option. Owing to the Predator’s manoeuvrability, rig moves are quick and cheap. Top-holing with the Predator enableswell abandonment, at a fraction of thecost of a big-rig: 700k cheaper than a budgetoperator 1.1m saving with a premiumoperatorBudget operator day rate: 21,700P Predator; BR Big-rigDe-risking geothermal drilling: the mixed fleet approach November 2020Premium operator day rate: 40,0009

Save Money with a Mixed Fleet Approach: Well Abandonment3 well campaign (plus 1 failed well)Budget big-rig operatorPremium big-rig operatorIn a 3 well campaign with 3successful wells, and 1abandoned well at 650 m: The mixed fleetapproach is considerablycheaper as any topsection drillingchallenges are borne bythe Predator. Any delays are reducedas the Predator canrapidly move followingabandonment andprepare another topsection for the big-rig.Budget operator day rate: 21,700Premium operator day rate: 40,000P Predator; BR Big-rigDe-risking geothermal drilling: the mixed fleet approach November 202010
