DIRE FOES MISSION PACK 10 SLAVE TROPHY1

DIRE FOES MISSION PACK 10:SLAVE TROPHYFLIGHTAdmittedly, cardio is neither a requirement nor somethingstrictly necessary for anyone working in the administrativedepartment of a research center. All the more so when it’s asecret facility in the middle of the jungle. Where are you goingto go jogging—through a jungle full of all kinds of famishedbeasts, eager to sting you, poke you, trap you, bite you, anddevour you? That’s a terrible idea. It’s better to stay in thecafeteria and drink to forget that you still have a few monthsleft in that isolated hellhole in the middle of the Durgamaregion. This is why his colleagues from the administrationdepartment would have been truly stunned if they had seenhow fast their coworker was running through the jungle, jumping and dodging branches and vines with the dexterityof an expert. Of course, it would be an even greater shockfor them to learn that Lee Kyung-Ho, or what little was leftof him at that point, was actually sleeping with the fishes atthe bottom of a foul pond a couple of miles away from thecafeteria. This thought cheered Lashtis as he hurried toward themicro-shuttle he had hidden in the dense forest. He reallyneeded something that he could laugh about after such arough patch. Succeeding in infiltrating one of Durgama’ssecret research centers had been a major accomplishment, and gaining access to the secure line and to the maximumsecurity communications database of the facility’s directorhad been the greatest feat of his career as a Speculo Agent. But the day before his extraction, this perfectly executed planwas derailed by a surprise attack by the Morat, who took overthe complex and put all non-essential personnel, namely theadministration staff, to work as slave labor. It had been twohellish months of backbreaking work clearing the ground atgunpoint in preparation for the arrival of more Morat troops, while he waited for the right moment to make his escape.Although he could have identified himself and put an end tohis suffering, he knew that was a bad idea. The Morat wouldhave taken the data package from him and presented it astheir own achievement. And they needed this win, becauseit was the only surviving copy; although the Morat raid hadcaught everyone by surprise, the director of the center hadjust enough time to purge his personal memory banks of allsensitive data. Moreover, no one could guarantee that theMorat wouldn’t immediately kill him, either to cover up thetruth or simply for fun. And furthermore, he realized howimportant these data were to the Shasvastii ExpeditionaryForce command, which was anxious to save face since it failedto obtain similar data in the raid on the Raveneye orbitalplatform. So now, all he had to do was wade through thecreek that separated him from his micro-shuttle, send theunlock signal for the mimetic system from his comlog, get thehell out of that wretched place, and finally be done with thisnightmare.Lashtis was already anticipating the praising words of hissuperiors when a bullet pierced cleanly through his skull. Hisbody fell in the middle of the creek, and the stream carriedaway the data storage unit that slipped from his lifeless hand.Lashtis’ face—in all truth, it was actually Lee Kyung-Ho’s face—was still grinning with anticipation as he sank into the water, ironically just as the poor administrative clerk had done afterhaving both his identity and his life taken away from him.In the vicinity of the Zebu Research Center.Northwest area of Durgama, exact location:Classified. Concilium Prima.CAPTURELarak cursed under her breath as she put her weapon backin its holster. She wanted to keep her prey from crossing thestream, but the human had fallen into the water and shewould have to get wet, which is exactly what she was trying toavoid and why she shot him. She had crossed quite a few riverswhen she was a member of the Morat infantry reconnaissanceteams, and that was one of the reasons why she transferredto the Zabuk, a unit where her tracking skills had proved veryuseful. She didn’t expect the human to be able to get so far. His fileindicated that her prey was a bureaucrat and he didn’t seemto be physically fit. But in all her years as a slaver, she hadseen desperation make her prey run like hell many times.Ultimately it was pointless though, because they alwaysended up going down. Usually alive and sometimes dead, asin this case, and in a river, to her regret. But every Morat mustfind joy in carrying out their duties. So whistling a tune, Larakunsheathed her monofilament blade. She wasn’t going to carrythe whole body; it was very hot, and the head with the Cubewould do. If the intelligence guys needed anything, whateverthat poor bastard had seen, they would find it in there. In the vicinity of the Zebu Research Center.Northwest area of Durgama, exact location:Classified. INTERRUPTIONAMBUSH“It’s my day off, sir,” Anyat did not shy away from making hertone reflect her annoyance at the call that was interrupting thefirst of the many tankards of Sulttrax liquor she intended todrink that day.Hasht was enjoying reading “Deep Abyss,” a historical fictionset in the days of the Tashevii—the Long Escape of theShasvastii from their home system aboard motherships. Itwas a real classic, written by Shulashtanii. The Corax liked thisgroup of writers very much because they documented theirworks thoroughly and he got to learn a lot about the historyof his race with very little effort. So whenever he was lying inwait, as he was at that moment, he would always use the timeto read a little.“Correction, Treitak Anyat,” her superior replied in a tone thatconveyed how little he cared about Anyat’s mood. “It ‘was’ yourday off. Now it’s another joyous day in the service of your race.Tell me, are you armed?”“I’m a Treitak, sir. I’m always armed,” Anyat was truly infuriated.First, her day off is ruined, and now she’s asked this stupidquestion. Is there going to be no end to the insults today?“Excellent. Proceed to the meeting point we are sending toyour comlog and get ready for a hike through the jungle. We’vedetected a sudden interest from our Shasvastii friends in aZabuk who is returning with her prey. This interest of theirsinvolves a transport that could very well be carrying an assaultteam. If the Shasvastii want this slaver, she must be carryingsomething important. Gather your team, go out there, andprotect the Zabuk and whatever she is carrying with all theforce necessary.”Somewhat irritated, Hasht turned off the hovering screenwhen he saw the Kurgat approach the autonomous airtracking station he was hiding behind. Without hesitation,he shot him in the head and alerted the aircraft that it couldnow descend and land safely. It would still take them a whileto notice that the Morat engineer was missing, which provideda window of opportunity sufficient to recover the head of theSpeculo Agent that the Zabuk had slain—as long as therewere no unforeseen circumstances. In the vicinity of the Zebu Research Center.Northwest area of Durgama, exact location:Classified. Concilium Prima.“Are you giving me leave to shoot the Shasvastii, sir?” theTreitak asked cautiously.“The Shasvastii are our allies, and they are essential to thestructure of the Combined Army, Anyat,” her commandingofficer stated. “But you do whatever you must to protect boththis Morat citizen and the interests of the Supremacy.”“Roger that, sir. I’m on my way.” Anyat grinned. It wasconfirmed: she was allowed to open fire on the Shasvastii Her superior was right, this was going to be a joyous day in theservice of her race.NCO’s canteen in the headquarters of the TarlokBattle Group. DIRE FOESSLAVE TROPHY:CHARACTERSZABUK, MORAT SLAVERSDespite their bad reputation, for theMorat, all life is valuable. For this race, every life matters. In the sense thatevery life is worth something, all liveshave a price. Slavery, understood asan essential part of the spoils of war,of the victor’s reward, is a traditionthat dates back to the origins of Morat history. From societiesbased on a slave economy, which enslaved entire populations,a notion has survived to the present day: defeated prisonersare to be used as a slave labor force, and commonly for thewar effort. Those captured by the Morat are forced to carry outthe worst logistical and engineering tasks in order to supportthe progress of the Supremacy’s operations on the frontlines. Some may be sent to military contractors’ factories tomanufacture weapons, munitions, and hardware, serving asslave labor for these Morat companies. Working conditions ineither assignment are often appalling, and most people wouldregard being captured and enslaved by the Morat as a fateworse than death. That is why there are few who are more hated on thebattlefield than Morat Slavers, heartless beings whose maintask is to identify the most promising prisoners to meetthe needs of the logistics and engineering divisions of theSupremacy, or of the Morat corporations that thrive on war.Initially, the Zabuk were just a specialized troop attached tothe Logistics divisions, and occasionally former soldiers onthe payroll of corporations who accompanied the AggressionForces to protect the interests of their employers. However thiscreated a number of problems, as Supremacy officers don’t likeinterference from civilian organizations, no matter how manyex-military staff work for them. Consequently, the Zabukbranched off from Logistics to become a highly specialized, independent corps with a unique status in the chain ofcommand, working both for the Aggression Forces and forprivate Morat corporations according to certain quotas agreedbetween the latter and the High Command. The duties of theZabuk remain the same: to go around the battlefield markingthose suitable for forced labor, and to chase down any slavewho dares escape from a labor camp or a Morat factory.Hunting down escaped slaves is one of the main tasks ofthe Zabuk, as well as one of the most abhorred since theyare authorized to capture the fugitives either dead or alive, and most Zabuk prefer the first option. Their impunity andindifference to the lives of the fugitives is explained by the factthat their work must set an example. Slaves must understandthat anyone who tries to escape is doomed to be killed, eitherduring the chase or by summary execution upon return to thelabor camp. For the Morat, as valuable as a slave may be, it’smore important to maintain discipline, and there is no betterway to do so than through fear. The Zabuk thus become thesword of Damocles for every slave under Morat rule. Thosepoor prisoners don’t fear anything or anyone like they fearthese seasoned hunters who are famous for being able to catchany slave, or to shoot them in the back if they don’t feel likerunning that day. But no matter how despicable they may be,they should never be underestimated. All Zabuk are veteranswith years of experience, capable of joining the AggressionForces in the roughest assaults, precisely where they can gettheir hands on the most coveted prize: the best slaves to servethe needs of the Morat.SHASVASTII CORAX HASHT“Vengeance is an acceptable cause, provided it acts as a driving force forsurvival.”Recitative no. 47. Corishva Manual ofShasvastii Military Doctrine. My subject-identifier is Hasht. I belong to the sequentialbrood 6/529. Along with my siblings, I was bred as a soldierand protector of my race. I was conditioned to be the perfectguardian of the Shaviish—the SpawnEmbryo reservehatchery—for the Aerota star cluster. When the vicious Tohaaattack upon our Shaviish took place, I was undertaking aninduced learning shift inside my SeedEmbryo. The emergencyhatching protocols allowed me to dispatch a number ofaggressors and to collaborate in the evacuation of theSpawnEmbryos, averting an even greater disaster. When theassault concluded with the destruction of the Shaviish, I wasleft with no other motivation but vengeance. I requested atransfer to the Corash unit, so I could choose to be postedwhere I could hurt the Tohaa the most. My goal was to fulfillthe duty I was bred for: protecting my race, only in a moreproactive, hostile way.I specialized in assault and punishment actions on the Tohaafronts. I maimed and then killed any Tohaa I could get myhands on, and made sure to destroy anything that was ofany importance to them. I took part in the capture of theTeramaasu stronghold, in the incursion into the Trojans of theBreo-Kasi gas giant, and in the destruction of the scientificcolonies of planet Doymas. I took no prisoners and left noloose ends, except for that one time. A Tohaa rescue teammanaged to seize the prisoner I was interrogating. Years later,a galaxy away, my aeropter was ambushed and, as I crawledfrom under the burning wreck, I faced her again one-on-one.But even her master plan for revenge was not enough to killme and, once again, I escaped the inescapable. Now hereI stand, alive and doing what I do best: killing. Next time Iencounter her, it will be the last. She has eluded me far toomany times. I refuse to leave a job half-done again. I am aCorax. I am inevitable. There is no escaping me. Keep that inmind if you ever think to cross my path.4

TREITAK ANYATAnyat is notorious across the TreitakUnit for her unscrupulous methods, her love for games of chance and herpersistent presence in some of the mostdisreputable gambling dens. With avast array of tricks up her sleeve, Anyatlets nothing stand in her way when on amission, particularly if said mission would earn her favors andprivileges.Anyat did not enlist for glory; she is in it for the thrills andthe spoils of war. Everything she does is part of a scheme toamass material rewards with the ultimate goal of achievingwhat to her is a great life: an early, honorable retirementwith well-lined pockets. Along the way, she will tryto enjoy herself. Anyat is not afraid of diving intodelicate positions: her profit margin is wider whenall bets are against her. However, on occasion herpenchant for gambling has seen her involved inuntenable scenarios. Maybe one day her riskanalysis will falter, and she might not live totell the tale, but until that day the MoratHigh Command will see her as a winningbet.5

DIRE FOESMISSION: SLAVETROPHYA Zabuk is returning triumphant with her trophy: the head ofan escaped slave that will serve as an example for the otherhumans being held captive at the Zebu Research Center. Butthe Morat slaver doesn’t know that this head does not belongto a mere human administrative clerk, but to a Speculo Agentwho had taken his place without anyone’s knowledge. Thesecrets contained in this Shasvastii agent’s Cube could regainsome of the prestige the Continuum lost as a result of a fewunfortunate actions during the storming of the RaveneyeOrbital Complex. But first the raiding party led by Hasht mustsecure the trophy of the Zabuk, and that’s something thatneither Anyat nor her team will abide.Exclusion Zone.
