About Our SpeakerShirley V. Hoogstra, J.D.President of the Council for Christian Colleges & UniversitiesShirley became the seventh president of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities in September 2014.In this role, she combines her zeal for the rule of law and her passion for Christian higher education as shepromotes the value and purpose of high-quality, Christ-centered liberal arts education that shapes the heart, souland mind.Prior to the CCCU, Shirley served for 15 years as vice president for student life at her alma mater, CalvinCollege. She also spent more than a decade practicing law as a partner at a firm specializing in litigation in NewHaven, Connecticut. She has served on the boards of several community organizations and schools, includingthe New Haven County Bar Association and Calvin College. Shirley earned a bachelor’s degree in education atCalvin and a Juris Doctor, with honors, from the University of Connecticut School of Law.Honored GuestsMs. Kelly K. SavageDoctor of Commercial ScienceKelly is the Chief Human Resources Officer for Amway Corporation, and is responsible for the company’s morethan 19,000 employees worldwide. She graduated from Huntington College in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree inaccounting, and in 1985, received a Master of Business Administration from Colorado State University.Kelly has served on Huntington University’s Board of Trustees for 14 years, including serving as Board Chair forfive years (2011-2015). In October of 2015, Kelly was named board Chairman Emeritus. She is a member ofthe Merillat Society, 2017 Forester Fund Pacesetters Club and, along with her family, has established the SavageFamily Endowed Scholarship.Kelly’s dedication to others reaches beyond Amway and Huntington University. She has faithfully served in her church to impact youngpeople for Christ. She also volunteers for Inforum, a business group that helps women accelerate their professional careers. Kelly wouldlike to recognize those who have been most influential in helping her develop a lifelong commitment to Christ and service: her parents,Kenneth and Vivian Savage, family, church, friends and Huntington University.Mr. Steven D. PlattDoctor of Humane LettersSteve graduated from Huntington College in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration andplayed four years of varsity basketball. He was Indiana’s all-time leading collegiate scorer (3,700) points, and wasthe national leading collegiate scorer in 1973 and 1974.In 1994, Steve returned to Huntington College and became the Forester’s head basketball coach. During his14-year tenure, he compiled 329 wins against 143 losses for a .697 winning percentage, the highest in schoolhistory. He was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996, the NAIA Basketball Hall of Famein 1987 and was the first inductee of the Huntington College Hall of Fame in 1974. Steve is a member ofHuntington’s Forester Legacy Society, the 1897 Society, and he and his family have established an annual basketball scholarship. He alsoserves on the Haupert Institute for Agricultural Studies Advisory Council.In light of a lifetime of achievements on and off the basketball court, Steve has always been conscious of those around him while humblypraising others and giving God the glory for his success.2
