Inaddition to the undergraduate programmaterial, it contains valuable resourcesfor research at a professional level.About the ReaderThe guide is meant for current orincoming Engineering students at PennState University, who have a specificinterest in Aerospace Engineering.AssumptionsThe guide assumes that you have a basiccompetency in math, science, andcomputers, and that you have an idea ofwhat to expect in a college-levelengineering degree program.OrganizationThe guide is organized to help you accessthe given resources and to show you howto use them. It will begin with basicresources for the Aerospace major itself. Then it will go into resources forprofessional research.TipsTry to use this guide to learn about whatis relevant to you. The guide is meant forall undergraduate students, but someresources may be trivial to moreadvanced students.3

ResourcesThe following internet resources are useful to any Aerospace Engineeringstudent at Penn State who needs a basic guideline for the undergraduateprogram or for research.Penn State Aerospace Undergraduate Curriculum GuideCurriculum GuideLinksGuide: tractThe first guide is a comprehensive handbook for the undergraduateAerospace program at Penn State. It is slightly outdated, but itcontains all the necessary requirements and planning for entering themajor and graduating successfully. The second resource is a flowchartproviding a visual representation of the classes needed to graduate.Tips The course descriptions on page 24 and the course outline onpage 3 are especially useful for planning. To access the flowchart, click the link and go to the top rightcorner of the page and click “Aerospace Flowchart”.Wolfram AlphaComputational ram Alpha is an intuitive computational engine able to computevirtually any common mathematical problem. It is extremely helpful inthe math courses offered at Penn State due to its user-friendlyinterface and convenient computational ability.Tips The icons at the bottom left of the search bar allow input ofmathematical notation.4

PSU Aerospace Student OrganizationsInformational s/studentorganizations.aspxAbstractThis list of student organizations gives an overview of everyAerospace-related organization at Penn State. Student organizationsare great for meeting other Aerospace students and gaining hands-onexperience in the Aerospace world. This is a great way to hone yourskills outside of an internship or job.Tips You can find information about and contact the studentorganizations by clicking the links found in each organization’ssection.Engineer JobsJob-Search SiteLinkhttps://www.engineerjobs.com/AbstractThis website is a great source for all engineering specific jobs. Itsprimary advantage is that it is specific, yet it is large enough to benoticed by large companies. The website contains over 300,000 jobpostings and helpful guides for interviews. It is an excellent resourcefor posting resumes and finding the right job, since the search functioncan be narrowed to aerospace jobs.Tips The search filter can be used to sort by discipline and locationand can be further sorted by experience level. The magazine section of the website includes lots of helpfularticles for getting a job in your field of choice.Aerospace Research Central (ARC)Journal DatabaseLinkhttps://arc.aiaa.org/AbstractThe most popular database for Aerospace research papers. This siterequires a membership fee without a Penn State ID, but it has the greataccess to exclusive and valuable Aerospace research. The databasecontains all articles from the American Institute of Aeronautics and5

Astronautics (AIAA) and many other journals. It is useful to anyonewho wants access to important aerospace literature.Tips A Penn State ID allows you to bypass the membership fee.The search function is keyword-based, matching the keywordto the title of the desired document.Catalog of US Government Publications (CGP)Government DatabaseLinkhttps://catalog.gpo.gov/F?RN 117024356AbstractThe Catalog of US Government Publications (CGP) is a database offederal publications available to the public. It has a search functionwhich allows access to all US publications on record. The database is useful to Aerospace Engineers because it allows accessto publications involving the US government, which is the facilitator ofmost aerospace activity in the country.Tips ExampleBibliographyPublications can be found using the keyword search and thecategories menu.MetaLib is a search engine that allows searches across multipleUS federal databases. It can be accessed with the link on thehome page.Searching for the keywords “jet engine” allowed me to find apublication from the Government Accountability Office (GAO),requesting an alternative engine for the Joint Strike Fighter programfrom the Department of Defense. Also enclosed is the response fromthe DoD, and their reasoning for continuing the original engineprogram. GAO, Joint Strike Fighter: Implications of Program Restructuringand Other Recent Developments on Key Aspects of DOD’s PriorAlternate Engine Analyses, GAO-11-903R (Washington, D.C.:Sept. 14, 2011).GAO, Joint Strike Fighter: Assessment of DOD’s FundingProjection for the F136 Alternate Engine, GAO-10-1020R(Washington, D.C.: Sept. 15, 2010).6

Statistical Abstract of the United StatesGovernment tions/timeseries/statistical abstracts.htmlAbstractThis database contains vast statistical information regarding thepolitical, social, and economic landscapes of the US. RegardingAerospace Engineering, this database can be used to find trends andanalyze data relating to government expenditures, employment, andspecial events such as rocket launches and graduations.Tips Each year’s abstract can be found on the home page, and a topiccan be selected for each year.ExampleBelow is an example of a document taken from the 2001 statisticalabstract: Section 16, Science and Technology. It covers expendituresand obligations for R&D and universities, employment, revenue fromthe space industry, and many other science and 121ed/tables/science.pdf7
