James F.Sanft has served as President and CEO ofConcordia Plan Services (CPS) since 2008and formerly served as Executive VicePresident and Chief Operating Officer.Sanft is the leader of one of the mostsuccessful employee benefits programs in thenation. CPS provides the qualified employeebenefit plans of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) and serves 6,000ministries, 85,000 workers and dependents,25,000 retirees and manages over 5 billionin assets. Under Sanft’s visionary leadership,CPS has expanded its services and benefitswhile still constraining costs in a rising costenvironment. In addition, Sanft lead effortsto secure the Concordia Retirement Planfollowing the 2008-2009 Global FinancialCrisis and in implementing strategies tosafeguard the Concordia Health Plan fromreligious freedom challenges brought on bythe Affordable Care Act.Sanft’s leadership has benefitted thecommunity at Concordia University, Nebraska.CPS administers health, retirement, disabilityand death benefits as well as a 403(b) planfor those employed at Concordia Nebraska.CPS also meets with graduating church workstudents to help them become financiallyprepared to enter church work and navigatetheir benefits as they begin serving the LCMS.James Sanft graduated from Concordia Teachers College, Seward, Nebraska, in 1985with a Lutheran Teachers Diploma. He served for one year as a math and computerscience teacher at Concordia Lutheran High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, beforeearning his Master of Science degree in Mathematics and Statistics from theUniversity of Nebraska–Lincoln in 1988.Sanft worked in the group insurance industry as an actuary for Ameritas LifeInsurance Corp. in Lincoln, Nebraska, and Minnesota Life in St. Paul, Minnesota. In1999, Sanft joined Concordia Plan Services (CPS) as Director of Actuarial Services. In2008, he became the President and Chief Executive Officer for CPS.At CPS, Sanft is responsible for overall management, building relationships withkey stakeholders and stakeholder groups, and establishing and implementing CPS’svision and strategy. He shares his knowledge and passion as a frequent presenter atThe Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod conferences and gatherings.He is an active leader in the church benefits community, serving as the Chair of theChurch Alliance. This work frequently takes Sanft to Washington D.C. to meet withmembers of Congress, regulators and other officials to discuss issues and concernsof church benefits plans. Sanft has served on the Board of Directors for the ChurchBenefits Association.Sanft is active in his congregation, Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, in St. Louis,Missouri. He is a small group leader, new member class instructor and leads an effortto revise the congregational constitution and bylaws.Through the years, he has served his churches in a variety of other ways includingelder, church treasurer, school board member, confirmation instructor, choir memberand chair of the Vision Statement Revision Committee.Sanft and his wife, Janell (Broberg) ’85, are blessed with three children: Evan Sanft(Nicole), Dr. Ryan Sanft ’13 (Rebecca ’13), and Tyler Sanft (Madeline). K u r t S e n sk ed o c t o r o f l aw sDr. Kurt Senske is the Founder and Principal of CEO-Board Services, a consulting firmthat specializes in working with mission-oriented organizational leaders and boardsaround issues of governance, strategy, organizational structure, succession planning,coaching and mergers and acquisitions.For the past 23 years, Dr. Senske served as Chief Executive Officer of Upbring (formerlyLutheran Social Services of the South), a multi-faceted, multi-state, social serviceagency with an annual operating budget of over 100 million and 1000 employees. AtUpbring, Dr. Senske has been responsible for more than quadrupling the size of theagency and steering the once-troubled agency back to financial strength. During histenure the organization eliminated an indebtedness of 60 million and currentlyenjoys an endowment of over 40 million.Dr. Senske completed his undergraduate work at Concordia University Texas andValparaiso University in Indiana, majoring in Accounting with a Bachelor of Sciencedegree in Business Administration. He holds a Juris Doctor degree from the Universityof Illinois College of Law, a Master of Arts Degree in International Relations fromSchiller International University in Paris and a Ph.D. in Government from theUniversity of Texas at Austin.The Doctor of Laws degree is conferredupon individuals who have distinguishedthemselves through prolonged superior servicein their field of endeavor. M o r r i sm a s t e r e d u c at o r awa r dThe Master Educator Award is presented toteachers, Directors of Christian Education, schooladministrators and Deaconesses who havedistinguished themselves through prolongedsuperior service in Lutheran educational ministry.Leslie R. Morris served in Lutheran schools forover 50 years in a variety of capacities includingteacher, counselor and principal. He describes hislife-calling as not a job but as “opportunities toshare the amazing love of God and bringing gloryand honor to Him.”Morris exemplifies ministry in all he does. Hisleadership was apparent at his call to BethanyLutheran School in Menlo, California, in 1966. Withracial discrimination happening at local schools,Morris opened and affirmed paths for children ofall races to attend Bethany and for their familiesto participate in Bethany church functions. Hisministry efforts spread into the communitythrough forming an adult tutoring program,providing food, clothing and shelter to those inneed and starting the Lutheran athletic associationin the area. During Morris’ time at Bethany, theschool and church adopted two Laotian refugeefamilies through Lutheran Family Services. Theschool provided the children’s education, Englishas a Second Language classes and essential needsfor the families.Morris continued to help children succeed inspite of adversity at his next call to West PortalLutheran Church and School in San Francisco,California. His wisdom, experience and Christianleadership benefitted the school and especiallythe Asian community. Morris provided thirty yearsof service to an ever-growing school througha variety of roles including principal, interimprincipal, classroom teacher, student and familycounselor, community builder, yearbook advisor,accreditation leader and committee organizer.Leslie Morris was born and raised in Seaside, Oregon. He lived on a small ten-acrefarm with cattle, chickens and a large vegetable garden.Morris received his diploma from Concordia College, Portland, Oregon, in 1962. Hegraduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Concordia Teacher’sCollege, Seward, Nebraska in 1964 and continued his education at PepperdineUniversity, receiving his Masters in School Administration in 1966. Morris alsoreceived a Master’s degree in Theology from Simpson College, San Francisco in 1979.Morris began his ministry at First Lutheran School, Culver City, California, teachingfifth and sixth grade and counseling the middle school and high school youth group.He was called to Bethany Lutheran School, Menlo Park, California, in 1966. He wasa teacher, administrator, principal and pastoral assistant during his time at Bethany.Morris then spent one semester substitute teaching in the Mid-Peninsula PublicSchool system and the second semester as a fourth-grade teacher at Bethel LutheranSchool, Cupertino, California. In 1985, Morris began serving at West Portal LutheranSchool as the sixth-grade teacher. Morris spent over 30 years at West Portal fulfillingmany roles including teacher, principal, counselor and advisor.Morris volunteered his time in both his church and community. His long list of serviceincludes many in the education sector including adult reading tutor, reviewer of children’sliterature, proofreader, evaluator of Lutheran and Catholic local schools, mentor to newteachers and leadership roles in many education conferences and committees. Morrisgave much of his time to student athletics serving as Commissioner and Treasurer forthe Lutheran Athletic Association, Director of the Lutheran Basketball Tournamentand Cheerleading Contest and Vice President of Nabata Yero Gridiron Club. Morris alsoserved his community by leading devotions at local convalescent hospitals, visiting shutins, serving the needy with clothes, food and shelter as Coordinator of Mid-PeninsulaMinistry and teaching Vacation Bible School.Morris has won numerous awards and recognitions including Who’s Who AmongAmerica’s Teachers, Professional Teacher of the Year, Distinguished Teaching Award,Influential Middle School English Teaching Award and English District LifetimeMinistry Teaching Award.h o n o r a r y d e g r e e s a n d awa r d sT i m o t h y J. H e t z n e rc r e s t o f c h r i s t awa r dTimothy Hetzner grew up on a dairy farm in Frankenmuth, Michigan, where heattended a one-room schoolhouse for the first two years of his education. He thenattended Immanuel Lutheran School in Frankentrost. Hetzner was active in sportsand drama during his four years at Buena Vista High School in Saginaw, Michigan.He graduated from Concordia University Ann Arbor in 1976 and from ConcordiaUniversity, St. Paul in 1978.Hetzner began his service in youth ministry at Hope Lutheran Church in Rochester,New York, in 1978. He served as a teacher and youth director at St. John LutheranChurch in Mt. Prospect, Illinois. Hetzner served as Director of Discipleship atImmanuel Lutheran Church in Palentine, Illinois, for twenty years. He now serves asPresident and CEO of Lutheran Church Charities (LCC).Hetzner began the LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry in 2008. The ministry began whenLCC deployed to Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina hit to conduct conventional crisisresponse. FEMA asked LCC to help rescue animals. This gave Hetzner an idea and atthe next disaster relief effort, Hetzner suggested they bring a few pet Golden Retrieversto see how this affected the victims on the scene. Now the LCC K-9 Comfort DogMinistry has 130 dogs living across 27 states. The ministry only uses AKC PurebredGolden Retrievers that undergo extensive training. The handlers also must go throughmany hours of training, and the dogs are trained to work with multiple handlers. Thedogs are well cared for and have protocols in place for time limits, break and play times.Hetzner and has won multiple awards for his work including the ASPCA 2016 Dogof the Year Award for LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ruthie following the Comfort Dogsresponse to the Pulse Night Club Shooting in Orlando, Florida. The LCC K-9 Ministryhas also won the 2016 Marley Award in recognition for the outstanding ministry theyhave demonstrated.Hetzner and his work have been featured on Good Morning America, CNN, ABCNightline, The Doctors, Hallmark Home and Family and the Weather Channel.Hetzner and his wife, Jackie (Liese), are blessed with four children: Emily Martisius (Joe),Stephen Hetzner (Jamie), Katie Anderson (Brian) and Philip Hetzner. They also enjoy thegift of their five grandchildren.Hetzner has led LCC through many positivechanges during his tenure, including initiatingPass-Through-Giving where each dollar givengoes directly to a cause or need. LCC worksthrough The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synodcongregations, schools and universities, helpingthem expand Christ-centered ministry to theircommunities and world. LCC’s mission is toshare the mercy, compassion, presence andproclamation of Jesus Christ to those who aresuffering and in need. Thousands of volunteersare deployed for disaster and crisis response andmission projects each year.In August 2008, Hetzner launched the LCCK-9 Comfort Dog ministry with four GoldenRetrievers. Currently, there are 130 dogs in27 states. In 2014, LCC launched the LCCKare 9 Military Ministry to veterans and theirfamilies. In 2017, LCC launched the LCC K-9Police Ministry using current and retired lawenforcement handlers.In January 2020, Hetzner started the NationalHearts of Mercy and Compassion Ministry toreach out to people in their time of sorrow withhandmade wooden hearts.Hetzner is the author and teacher of an in-depthBible study curriculum called WORD with over4,500 students from 26 states. He sends out adaily devotion through email. Hetzner also shareshis Biblical knowledge through study tours to theMiddle East and European Countries.In recognizing Leslie R. Both Greg and Dixie aremembers of the Seward County Chamberand Development Partnership. Throughtheir combined efforts, Seward is a desiredlocation for businesses, visitors andresidents. It is a vibrant, welcoming, familyfriendly and safe community.The Zabkas are strong supporters ofConcordia University, Nebraska advocatingfor the importance Concordia holds in theSeward community. The Zabkas also lift upand support the Nebraska National GuardMuseum, where people from all over thestate come to learn about the sacrifice andcourage of the Nebraska National Guard.Greg and Dixie are active members ofSeward United Methodist Church and manyother local organizations, committees andboards. Through all they do, they are a vitalpart of the Seward community showing asincere, authentic love for their communityand its people.Greg and Dixie Zabka both grew up in Fullerton, Nebraska. Greg received his Bachelor ofScience degree in Mortuary Science from the University of Minnesota. Dixie graduatedfrom the University of Nebraska–Lincoln with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education.The Zabkas have lived in Seward since 1977 when Greg started serving at Wood BrothersFuneral Chapel as a funeral director. Dixie worked in the district office for the SewardSchool District for 17 years. In 1998, Greg and Dixie purchased the funeral home, and itbecame Wood-Zabka Funeral Home. In 2008, following an extensive remodel, to betterserve families and the community, the name became Zabka Funeral Home. In 2018, uponGreg and Dixie’s retirement, the firm is now Zabka-Perdue Funeral Home.Greg and Dixie are very active in the Seward community as members of a wide variety oforganizations, clubs and boards. They both are members of the Seward County Chamberand Development Partnership and Seward Magazine Club. Greg is a member of theSeward Rotary Club and past Master of Oliver Lodge No. 38 A.F. & A.M. He currentlyserves as Chairperson of the Seward Cemetery Board and on the Board of Directors ofCattle Bank & Trust. Greg formerly served on the Memorial Health Care Systems Boardof Directors and as President of the Nebraska Funeral Directors Association. Dixie is amember of P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Chapter CC in Seward.Both Greg and Dixie have been recipients of awards and honors. Greg was the recipientof the Seward Community Service Award in 1990 and was honored as the Grand Marshalfor the 2019 Seward Holiday Light Parade, recognizing his years of service on the Holidayand Santa House Committee. Dixie has been awarded the Rotary Service Above SelfAward and the Outstanding Woman in Business 2019 Award from Concordia University,Nebraska.The Zabkas are active members of Seward United Methodist Church serving on anumber of committees. Dixie sings with the Chancel Choir and both are members of theBuilding Improvement Committee. Their faith is evident as they try to live each day withgratitude to the God they serve.Greg and Dixie are blessed with two daughters: Melissa Luebbe (Jeff ) and MonicaSommerfeld (Alex), and they enjoy the gift of their three grandchildren.In recognizing Greg and Dixie Zabka withthe Distinguished Service Award, ConcordiaUniversity, Nebraska praises God forproviding all who dedicate themselvesto public service.
