Meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine (MPSV4) has been availablesince the 1970s.2.) Meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4) was licensed in 2005.Both vaccines can prevent four (4 types of meningococcal diseases, including two(2 of the three (3 types most common in the US and a type that causes epidemicsin Africa. Meningococcal vaccines cannot prevent all types of the disease, but theydo protect many people who might become sick if they didn’t get the vaccine. Bothvaccines work well, and protect about 90% of those who get it. MCV4 is expected togive better, longer-lasting protection.
