We envision a future wherepeople and wildlife share theenvironment of NorthwesternPennsylvania in a healthy andmutually supportive way.From the President“a wing, a prayer,and a mortgage ”Dear Friends of Wildlife,As I write to tell you aboutwhat an eventful year 2016was for Tamarack WildlifeRehabilitation andEducation Center (TWREC), Ido so with the knowledgethat at this moment, amagnificent Bald Eaglerecovers at our center fromwhat appear to be woundsinflicted by combat withanother eagle. He hasextensive head trauma,abrasions, and infection –and he is additionallyemaciated (likely becausehe was unable to hunt). Iworry about him, as I do allof our patients, but I alsohave every confidence thathe will be OK, for he isreceiving the best possiblecare in our area.We made arrangements forthe eagle to be treated byDr. Donald Consla and hisassociates at theConneaut Lake VeterinaryHospital. He is now2recuperating at thecenter under the watchfuleye and care of ourExecutive Director, CarolHolmgren, and her volunteerassistants. This is notnecessarily news, for TWREChas been caring forwounded wildlife since 1989.What is news is that we aredoing it for the first time in aproperty owned by thecenter!In early 2016, TWREC’s Boardof Directors took the firststeps in a strategic planningprocess to develop the goalsand direction for the centerover the next several years.A number of ideas forservice and programimprovement werediscussed and they led tothe conclusion that it was inthe best interests of thecenter to own the space ithad rented for 20 years fromformer long-time ExecutiveDirector Sue DeArment. In planning for the purchase, the board and staff spent a gooddeal of time preparing for a major fundraising campaign thatwill raise money for building renovations, propertymaintenance, and enhanced medical and educationalservice delivery. You will hear a great deal more about ourplans – and opportunities for you to help – in the comingmonths!Spring is a season of renewal, rebirth and great energy so itseems fitting to share this with report with you now. We areproud of what we accomplished last year and are so excitedabout TWREC’s future.
