Patients 18 and under, represented 35% of ourpatient population. Although 47% of our patients wereuninsured – none were denied health care services due totheir inability to pay.Charles Drew Health Center provided employmentopportunities for 234 individuals, many residing in theHealth Centers targeted service area, (east/northeast andnorthwest sector of Douglas County) with an overall direct/indirect economic impact of over 15 million.Our goal is to provide quality, comprehensive affordablehealthcare to all individuals in a comfortable and safeenvironment. Charles Drew Health Center strives to recruitthe best medical, dental and behavioral health providersavailable while supporting them with qualified, culturallycompetent, compassionate staff. Our Service Delivery System for 2013HEALTH CARESERVICESMedical CareDental CareMental Health ServicesThe CDHC Dental Program served2,542 patients. This represents a25% increase over 2012. The Dentalprogram facilitated 6,291 patientvisits in 2013. This represents a 28%increase over 2012.In 2013 Charles Drew Health Centerserved 630 patients and facilitated atotal of 1,884 patient visits through itsIntegrated Primary Care BehavioralHealth Program. The program issupported in part through grantdollars funded by the United Way ofthe Midlands and Region VI BehavioralHealthcare.Charles Drew Health Center served10,451 patients and facilitated38,304 patient encounters (visits) in2013. Charles Drew Health Centerprovides care for the entire family.Services include family practice,internal medicine, pediatrics, OB/GYN,pharmacy, radiology, opthalmology,minor surgery, behavioral health,nutrition, cardiology and podiatry.6Building Healthy Futures School-basedHealth Centers program partners(which includes Charles Drew HealthCenter) impacted 10,166 childrenduring the 2013-2014 school year.The mission of the Building HealthyFutures School-based Health Centersis to improve the health for ourcommunity’s underserved children andyouth through thoughtful collaborationand advocacy.The CDHC Dental Departmentprovides oral exams, sealants, fluoridetreatments, restorative services, oralsurgery (extractions) emergencyservices and rehabilitative services.New Baby BeginningsThe CDHC Baby Beginnings perinatalcare program offers a comprehensiveapproach to ensuring healthy birthoutcomes for infants and mothers. Theprogram is staffed by one familypractice physician/OB, a pediatricianand a perinatal nurse. In 2013, CharlesDrew Health Center provided perinatalcare services to 136 women. Of the 136women served, there were 81 deliveries.During 2013 the CDHC pharmacy filled27,185 prescriptions at an average costof 14.57. When compared to thenational average of 83.26 (AARP2012 average price a 3.6 % increase),patients at Charles Drew Health Centersaved 1,867,123.The average cost of a prescription atthe Charles Drew pharmacy increasedby 1.18 %. The pharmacy also filled 426prescriptions at a cost of over 35,000for uninsured patients with emergencymedical needs.Prescription AssistanceProgramIn 2013, through the MedicationAssistance Program, 814 prescriptionswere filled at a cost to the patients of 20,350, at a value of 67,773.64. Thisrepresents a savings of 47,423.64 toCDHC Patients.In 2013 CDHC served 250 patientsresiding in public housing. CDHC inpartnership with Omaha HousingAuthority operates and manages four(4) Public Housing Health Centers atthe following OHA locations:Crown Tower5904 Henninger Ave.(402) 457-1240cardiovascular disease, depressionand obesity. Through these programs,CDHC case managed 541 diabeticpatients, 1,033 patients with adiagnosis of hypertension and 75asthmatic patients. The HealthCenter serves homeless patients at twolocations: Catholic Charities Campusof Hope, located at 1490 North 16thStreet and the Siena Francis House,located at 1111 North 17th Street.School-based Health Centers Public Housing Health CentersJackson Tower600 South 27th St.(402) 457-1243Chronic DiseaseManagementSTD Counseling, Testingand Partner NotificationCharles Drew Health Center providesprimary health care services atfour of eight Omaha Public SchoolsSchool-based Health Centers. The totalnumber of unique patients served was1,328. Charles Drew Health Centerreceives funding support from BuildingHealthy Families to operate thefollowing School-based Health Centers:Belvedere Elementary SchoolKellom Elementary SchoolKing Science and TechnologyMagnet Middle SchoolNorthwest High SchoolIn 2013, CDHC tested a total of 1,161individuals. HIV/AIDS testing andcounseling was provided at the mainclinic and at both homeless cliniclocations. Outreach and communityhealth education initiatives also includefree HIV testing and counseling.During the calendar year of 2013,CDHC provided STD testing, counseling,treatment and partner notificationfor 1,931 individuals. Of the 1,931individuals tested, 19.6% (378)individuals tested positive. The averageage of the population served was 26.The CDHC Chronic DiseaseManagement Program providessystems of care designed to improvepatient health outcomes and reducecosts associated with long-term chronicillness. Currently CDHC operatesfive chronic disease managementprograms, which are diabetes, asthma,Of the 378 individuals that testedpositive for an STD, 269 tested positivefor Chlamydia (71.2%) and 109 (28.8%)tested positive for Gonorrhea.7

Employee Zumba classes foremployees and the community.Classes accommodate 25 participants.The mission of OHS is to reducethe rate of infant mortality in East/Northeast sector of Douglas Countyin Omaha, Nebraska by means ofpartnership with families, communitymembers and organizations throughawareness, training and education.OTHER ENABLINGSERVICESCharles Drew Health Center continuesto provide on-site interpreter servicesfor the medical, dental and WICclinics and for the Omaha HealthyStart HealthNET case managementprogram. In 2013 CDHC providedinterpreter service encounters(appointments) for 4,532 patients.This represents a 6% increase overinterpreter services provided in 2012.Disabilities AssistanceProgram Graduated 51 men from its 12-weekevening educational sessions; Maintained a monthly casemanagement and care coordinationcaseload of 21 men through the FFLResource Office; Processed 2,227 contacts – 1,611 callsand 152 texts/emails for assistance(this represents a 1% decrease from2012); and S erved 464 men through its FFLResource Office on a walk-in basis.The people you know, located where you live.Dedicated to delivering the best Medical, Dental, and Behavioral healthcare.2915 Grant Street Omaha, NE 68111-3863 CharlesDrewHCOmaha.orgThrough the Omaha Healthy StartHealthNET case managementprogram, OHS staff provided thefollowing services in 2013: One-on-one case management,screenings and health education andtraining for 56 pregnant women and211 inter-conceptional women;8Healthy Families is aimed at reducingobesity among children with a bodymass index (BMI) at or above the85th percentile. Seven families wereenrolled in the program in 2013.Children and families participatingin this program are referred bytheir primary care physician. Theprogram is sponsored by AlegentHealth and is offered to familiesat no cost. Earn-A-Bike program for children.Sixty children earned new bikes, newhelmets and bike locks by completingvolunteer services in the community.The children and their parents wererequired to participate in WellnessWorkshops (Better Nutrition andThe Importance of Physical Activity).They also participated in a BikeSafety Workshop. This program wasmade possible by Alegent Health andMutual of Omaha.These funds were invested in healthcenters to expand current outreachand enrollment assistance activitiesand facilitate enrollment of eligiblehealth center patients and servicearea residents into affordable healthinsurance coverage through the HealthInsurance Marketplace, Medicaid, or theChildren’s Health Insurance Program.Charles Drew Health Center providedthe following Health InsuranceMarketplace Outreach/Enrollmentsupport services in 2013:In 2013 CDHC provided assistanceto 33 medical and 25 dental patientsthrough its Disabilities AssistanceProgram.9

AmherstCollege, at that time, was one of the fewwhite colleges who accepted sizablenumbers of black students.In 1926, after graduation fromAmherst, Drew took a job at MorganCollege as a biology teacher andathletics director.Earning his money coaching athletes,Drew then returned to college toreceive his medical degree. Hegraduated from McGill University’smedical program, and took aninternship and residency in Canada.Afterwards, he became a teacher ofpathology at Howard College, and aresident at Freedman’s Hospital inWashington D.C. He then worked andtaught in New York, at the ColumbiaPresbyterian Hospital, receiving hisDoctorate from Columbia University.Charles Drew Health Center, Inc., in OmahaNebraska, was named in honor ofCharles Richard Drew, M.D.Dr. Drew was a brilliant African Americanphysician, educator and surgeon,famous for his pioneering workin blood preservation.His dissertation was on the conditionof blood stored in blood banks,and the method of storing bloodas plasma (sans white or red bloodcells) to increase storage life. He thensupervised the blood-plasma divisionof New York City’s Blood TransfusionAssociation, which was involved incollecting blood for the British Army.When America went to war in 1941,Drew was named as director of theblood bank for the National ResearchCouncil, collecting blood for the USArmy and Navy, and setting thegroundwork for the Red Cross collectingand banking procedures. In 1942, Drewreturned to Washington D.C., where hebecame head of Howard University’sDepartment of Surgery and ChiefSurgeon at Freedman’s Hospital. In1944, he was elevated to hospital Chiefof Staff and Medical Director, a positionhe held until 1948. He was killed in anautomobile accident in 1950, on theway to a medical conference.The storage of blood in plasma formhas saved untold lives since Drewbrought the process forward in the 1930’s,and he created the model for blood andplasma storage that is used by the RedCross even today. His importance tomodern medicine cannot be overstated.11
