FOOTBALL CLUB CHAIRMAN’S REPORTLast year’s emphatic 40-0 Grand Final triumph was always going to be a hard act to follow, but there were some fantastic moments for the SeaEagles and the Football Club during 2009. Not the least of which was winning the 2009 World Club Challenge, defeating Leeds, the English SuperLeague Champions, on their home turf 28-20 back in March. Congratulations to Des Hasler, Matt Orford, all the players, the coaching and supportstaff and the office staff back home for this magnificent achievement that few other NRL Clubs have been able to match. The performance of our NYC U20’s team in finishing the regular season as stand out Minor Premiers with an impressive 460 for and against wasalso a highlight of 2009. Well done to coach David Penna and all his players. We look forward to seeing more of the players from that team joiningKieran Foran in First Grade in the not too distant future. From the Football Club point of view, 2009 saw Football Club Directors meeting Members all round the country on various away trips with the growingband of “Travelling Supportahs”. The final home game of the season saw a Football Club Members only pre-match function at the Leagues Club, withMembers, Football Club Directors, Eagles Angels and a few Legends in attendance. We plan to make these a regular feature at the start and end ofeach season and by combining them with First Grade Player Reunions, they will represent a fantastic opportunity for Football Club Members to mixwith their heroes of yesteryear as well as their fellow Members. In 2010, we will be renewing our push for all Manly fans to join us as Football Club Members. Well known “Travelling Supportah”, Bob Stevenson, isleading the membership drive and will be kicking things off with the launch of the Football Club’s own website soon. Stay tuned. The Football Club Board continues to strive to strengthen the Football Club’s shareholding in the Sea Eagles at every opportunity. To that end, inOctober 2009, the Football Club purchased another 100,000 shares in the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles Ltd, injecting new capital into the Sea Eagles.Plans are already on foot for another 50,000 shares to be purchased early in the new year, providing further funds to support the Sea Eagles. Finally, I would like to pay tribute to our two retiring Football Club Directors, Kerry Sibraa and Geoff Toovey. Both men joined the Football Club Boardin 2004 following privatisation of the Sea Eagles. We cannot thank Kerry Sibraa enough for all his tireless work promoting the cause of the ManlySea Eagles remaining at Brookvale Oval long term through his successful lobbying of all levels of government for much needed funds. Despitehis retirement from the Football Club Board, he will continue in his quest for even more funds for the upgrade of our spiritual home. Geoff Tooveybrought a lot of passion for the history and tradition of the Football Club to the Board, as well as serving as a link to the current and former players ofour great Club. While Geoff is stepping down, his passion and link to the players will remain with Cliff Lyons seeking to replace Geoff on the FootballClub Board. On behalf of the Board, I would like to wish all Football Club Members and their families a safe and Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and asuccessful 2010 supporting our beloved Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.Bob ReillyFootball Club ChairmanLIFE MEMBERSJ L Munro*C White*D Stewart*G Ashton*R E Hudson*R H Ryan*E R Bull*G V Willoughby*E A Langford*J W Cameron*K R Arthurson AMD I Rae*G M HoustonW H Lloyd*R O HudsonD J Daley*J I PeeblesR W Batty*elected 1951elected 1957elected 1958elected 1959elected 1960elected 1962elected 1962elected 1964elected 1965elected 1966elected 1967elected 1967elected 1968elected 1969elected 1970elected 1972elected 1972elected 1973J A Tenison*T P BurkeJ K Collins*F R JonesF R StantonR Fulton AMD O JoyceM J KrilichT W RandallR H HighamG H LenonG C EadieA S ThompsonW W LloydJ L Martin*B R SeymourE J NoffzA G Keighran*elected 1973elected 1974elected 1974elected 1975elected 1977elected 1978elected 1978elected 1982elected 1982elected 1983elected 1983elected 1983elected 1984elected 1985elected 1985elected 1985elected 1987elected 1989R P MossopR J RitchieW P O’ConnellE W WhileyW J PooleP A VautinR LenonR J Bull*G O ThoroughgoodC P LyonsD HaslerG TooveyP J PetersK W Sibraa AOP L CummingsO J CunninghamW Bulmerelected 1991elected 1991elected 1992elected 1992elected 1993elected 1993elected 1994elected 1997elected 1997elected 1999elected 2000elected 2000elected 2003elected 2005elected 2006elected 2007elected 2008* DeceasedMANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 20091MANLY-2009.indd Sec2:116/12/09 11:00 AM

COACHING REPORTWhilst our Premiership defence in 2009 did not end as we had hoped, we should not allow that disappointment to overshadow ourfabulous achievements during the year. In particular, the winning of the 2009 World Club Challenge in March was a sterling effortand stamped the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles as the best Rugby League Club in the World. In a performance reminiscent of our 2008 Grand Final victory, a devastating opening to the second half saw us race to a 26 - 4lead over Leeds and from there we were never going to be beaten. Some late consolation tries to Leeds may have made the finalscore of 28 - 20 look a little more respectable, but there was no denying the dominance of the Manly Sea Eagles over the Englishchampions on their home turf. The way the squad and the entire organisation rose to the challenge of winning this title, where somany other NRL clubs had failed, was very satisfying for me as Head Coach and typified the focussed, professional and dedicatedcharacter of this group of players and staff. The trip to England also gave us a unique opportunity to blood some young talent and expose them to the big time. It was verypleasing to see Kieran Foran and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves kick on during the season, playing a number of first grade games eachbefore ultimately both representing New Zealand in the end of year Four Nations tournament. Congratulations to them both.Congratulations also to David Penna and his entire squad for winning the 2009 NYC Minor Premiership. We look forward to seeinga number of those talented young players making their mark in First Grade in the coming seasons. Already, Jamie Buhrer, WilliamHopoate, Daly Cherry-Evans and Darcy Lussick have joined Kieran Foran in graduating to the full time training squad for 2010 andno doubt when the time comes, they will be ready to grab their opportunity in First Grade just as Kieran did in 2009.I am very proud of the fact that for a number of years, the Manly Sea Eagles have been recognised as the NRL leader in the areasof injury prevention and injury management. A testament to the magnificent work of our medical and rehabilitation staff was thesuccessful return of George Rose to First Grade in 2009 after his terrible leg injury in 2007. Similarly, my assistant coaches, GeoffToovey and Kelly Egan and all the Football Department staff work tirelessly to put the best prepared Manly Sea Eagles team on thefield every week. To all of my staff, thank you for a job very well done.We head into 2010 confident of another successful season ahead and while the loss of Matt Orford will present some newchallenges, we have a great crop of young halves in Kieran Foran, Trent Hodkinson and Daly Cherry-Evans ready to rise to theoccasion, with experienced players such as Jamie Lyon on hand to guide them as they develop into top class First Grade footballers. To all Football Club Members, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and I look forward to seeing you at Brookvale in 2010.Des HaslerHead CoachFOOTBALL CLUB DIRECTORS 2009CO-PATRONSKerry Sibraa AOKen Arthurson AMNameBob REILLYPhilip DEANPeter BRYANTPeter O’DWYERKerry SIBRAADamian SMITHGeoffrey TOOVEY (resigned 22/10/09)Bob STEVENSON (appointed 31/10/09)Meetings Called77777761PositionChairmanCompany irectorMeetings Attended76667641MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 20093MANLY-2009.indd Sec2:316/12/09 11:00 AM
