Chamber Works September 2010 Page 5Leadership Washington CountyA New Year Begins The 2011 class of Leadership Washington County recently embarked on a journey of discovery with 24 members.Leadership Washington County is a program designed to educateand prepare participants for leadership positions through learningexperiences and an expanded knowledge of community resourcesand issues. Participants will meet monthly through May 2011.Their first destination was a Team-Building Retreat held at CampFor All and led by Kurt Podeszwa. Even as the class members enjoyed the bus ride through the countryside, they began to discovercommon interests with new acquaintances. The group completedseveral physically and mentally challenging activities. The first of these challenges was to travel the high seas on “Captain Kurt’s” (imaginary) ship. All hands were on deck and readyto follow Captain’s orders. The activity was best described byclass member Eric Berg as “a wicked game of Simon Says.” Therest of the morning’s challenges brought out leadership skills andtraits that some participants didn’t even know they had. They discovered new ways to work effectively in groups and on their own.The afternoon session focused on the traits of Leading Leadersand the importance of effective communication.Melissa Waggoner, volunteer supervisor, explained the manyvolunteer opportunities at Camp for All which hosts 7000 campers annually. The day concluded with a walking tour guided by Camp For Alldirector Kurt Podeszwa. This amazing state-of-the-art facility istotally barrier-free, not just accessible. There are no stairs, all bathrooms and shower stalls are wheelchair accessible (not just one),sidewalks are concrete and wide enough for two wheelchairs, andthere is even a tree house for all!At Camp For All, children and adults with special needs andchallenging illnesses have the opportunity to experience horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, archery, water activities, teamsports, arts and crafts, nature programs, and much more at theirown level. A highlight of the tour was meeting “Forest” the African Spurred Tortoise. The focus of the next session will be Communication Skills onSeptember 23. Dick Hammond from Leadership On The Movewill return to Brenham to lead the session. Class members willlearn about their personal communication styles and the styles ofothers-both in the workplace and at home.
