As a child, my parents founded what was then, the first mixedbilingual boarding school in Colombia, South America.Ever since, I have been surrounded by international educatorsand immersed in a multicultural environment. The thirst of my parents to instill in their children, languagesand cultural awareness, was vivid throughout our entireupbringing and is still a driving force for us today.A series of events led us to discover other horizons andopportunities in unchartered territories. This brought us toMiami, where in 1998, a small stand-alone language schoolopened and OHLA was born.Inspired by the unconditional dedication of my family, thegrowth of OHLA was achieved because of the unparalleledcommitment to its students, staff and faculty members, andnetwork of representatives from all over the world. Also, as apart of our core belief in total student care, OHLA has become aleader in empowering students to reach their higher educationgoals through our extensive University Gateway Program. We are proud to welcome, each year, thousands of studentsfrom over 66 nationalities.Today my family members are still involved with OHLA’s dayto-day operations and each keeps on embracing every OHLAnewcomer as a valued member of our own family. When you come to OHLA, you come to an award-winninglanguage school with endless opportunities for highereducation and the satisfaction of pursuing your academicdreams while meeting people from all over the world. When you come to OHLA, you will become part of our family.Welcome to theOHLA Family!Jenny NieveenPresident/OHLA Schools2Mission StatementTo offer a learning experience that challenges and supports itsstudents in the achievement of their linguistic goals whether forpersonal, professional or academic objectives. Our qualified teachers strive to provide a student-centeredenvironment that enhances academic learning and makesit possible for students to explore their linguistic creativity. We allocate the necessary institutional resources to offer acomprehensive curriculum, outstanding student services, impeccable institutional facilities and innovative technology forEnglish as a Second Language. Our knowledgeable and dedicated staff members ensure that,at all times, students are satisfied with their English languagestudies and successfully integrated into the community.

Academics & MORECurriculumOHLA uses a skills-based curriculum, focused specifically on developingnecessary linguistic skills in five major areas: reading, writing, listening, speaking and grammar. We, at OHLA, know that the best way to developthese skills is to do it in a “natural” way, the same way we all learned ournative languages. We believe that languages are not meant to be memorized, but rather to beused and practiced on a daily basis in order to maintain continuity and bemastered quickly.0102Pre-BasicBasic I03Spring / 12 WEEKS04Intermediate IBasic II05Intermediate IIAdvanced I12060708Advanced IIELITELEVELS OFFEREDCLASS SIZEAt OHLA, mastery of the English language is not viewed as astep-by-step approach, but rather as a continuous and progressive process in which international students are challenged as they move through their levels of language study. Our average class size is 12 students. However, our classrooms can easily accommodate 15 students. This smallsetting maximizes interaction and allows students to receive the individual attention required in a successful student-centered curriculumNew languages are continuously learned and improvedupon, the same way in which we are always learning andimproving our native language. The main reason for this isthat languages are always evolving; just like everything elsewe see or experience in life.

FacultyEvery member of our faculty holds a Bachelor’s Degree and are all certifiedto teach ESL. They have gained ESL qualifications through postsecondarystudies or specialized training courses. Besides looking for individualswith the required educational background, we seek teachers who haveinternational experience and, as such, a number of our faculty membershave had previous teaching assignments abroad. The diverse educationalbackgrounds of our teachers provide students the benefit of variousteaching styles and experiences.Entry Point andPlacement TestEach level lasts 12 weeks and is sub-divided in six 2-week-unitscalled “blocks”. Students may commence their language studies atthe beginning of any two-week block. For instance, if a student wereto start at the beginning of the third week (beginning of the secondblock), he or she would complete the remaining 5 blocks, make upthe work missed from the first block, and would only be promotedto the next level upon achieving a passing average score in all theassessment tools (such as the biweekly block exams). While the blocks are designed to be as self-contained and as noncumulative as possible, it is inevitable that the material will build onitself to some degree, resulting in a progression of skill development, which will maximize the students’ learning experience.ENTRYPOINTBlock 1(2 weeks)ENTRYPOINTENTRYPOINTBlock 6(2 weeks)Block 2(2 weeks)12WEEKSENTRYPOINTENTRYPOINTBlock 5(2 weeks)Block 3(2 weeks)ENTRYPOINTBlock 4(2 weeks)13
