Pൺ ൾ 2Mൺඒ 16, 2021Tਈਅ Aਓਃਅ ਓਉਏ ਏਆ ਔਈਅ Lਏ THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ASCENSIONThe theological unity, or perhaps even thetemporal experience of the early community, made it seem that Jesus’ resurrection and his ascension were inseparable aspects of a singlemystery. Only in the later writings of Luke andJohn has further theological reflection helpedthe Christian community to distinguish differentdimensions of the mystery. Liturgical traditionhas followed the forty-day chronology formulated by Luke. We would miss the point, however,if we were to demand a precise historical chronology of events such as the ResurrectionAscension that are primarily spiritual in natureand that clearly surpass the bounds of time andspace as we know them. What is important for us to grasp is the significance of the Ascension. For Luke, it is the decisive turning point that marks the end of Jesus’earthly ministry and the beginning of the disciples’ Spirit-led ministry and thus the ministry ofthe whole church down to our own day.TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONToday’s celebration varies from place toplace. In some parts of the United States, people gather for the Seventh Sunday of Easter, while other places celebrate the Ascension ofthe Lord. Several years ago, regions of bishopswere permitted to decide whether to retain Ascension Day on Thursday, the fortieth day afterEaster, or to move the celebration to the nearestSunday. This new flexibility in the Christiancalendar has to do with the desire to gather theChurch to celebrate its central feasts fully, andwith the Eucharist. Increasingly, as priests serveremote and scattered parishes, this is not alwayspossible mid-week.The Ascension is a key moment for graspingwhat life in Christ is all about. It is not about adeparture, but rather a plan for presence. Wewho are nourished by the Lord’s body andblood in the Eucharist are transformed to be hisabiding presence in the world. That is a truth soworth celebrating that we can adjust our calendar in order that the fullest possible gathering ofthe Church can be achieved.Sൺංඇඍ Mංർ ൺൾඅ Cൺඍ ඈඅංർ C ඎඋർ Parish Office (904) 261-3472www.stmichaelscatholic.comSr. Rose Paul Madassery, Office Managersrrosepaul@stmichaelscatholic.comLori Kennedy, Director of Religious Formationlkennedy@stmichaelscatholic.comSr. Josephine Thekkumthala, Pastoral Associate Denise Ziegler, Director of lscatholic.comWalt Edwards, Business ManagerPatty O’Neill, Bookkeeperwedwards@stmichaelscatholic.comJake Gosa, Pastoral Council ChairmanMike Mayer, Finance Council Chairman

T ൾ Aඌർൾඇඌංඈඇ ඈൿ ඍ ൾ LඈඋൽPARTS OF THEHOLY MASSThe General IntercessionsThe general intercessions were restored tothe liturgy in the reforms that followed the Second Vatican Council. In these prayers—alsoknown as the “universal prayer” or “prayer ofthe faithful”—the assembly prays for theChurch, the world, and the local community. Asthe name “prayer of the faithful” reminds us,these intercessions are a privilege of the baptized, which is why any catechumens are dismissed before the Creed and the intercessions. In baptism, we become members of a royalpriesthood, and what do priests do? They intercede; they pray. In standing to pray to God as acommunity, we are living out our royal priesthood. The intercessions at Mass usually follow aclear pattern, moving from general to specificneeds. We pray for the whole Church. We prayfor the world and for our nation. We pray forour local community, for those who have diedand for all the sick and afflicted. In our unitedprayer, we reach beyond ourselves and our ownneeds and grow in awareness of and compassionfor the needs of others.Diocese of St. Augustine FloridaEucharistic CongressSaturday, June 5th, 8am to 3:30pm, St. Joseph's inJacksonville. It is possible the parish can arrange for a charter busif enough are interested. Themonth of May is always part of the Easter season, thefifty days we celebrate in the liturgy the Resurrectionof Our Lord, a time also of awaiting the outpouring ofthe Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The celebration of Mayas a Marian month fits well with the liturgical celebrations of Easter and Pentecost as we recall Mary’ssion. May the Blessed Virgin Mary intercede for usand draw us closer to Christ her Son!Mission AppealThere will be a Mission Appeal on the weekend of May 29/30. The Mission appeal is torequest your generous financial support for aproject of the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate (ASMI), a religious order for women inKerala, India. They seek help to start a homefor poor, homeless seniors who don’t have anyone to care for.great joy in her Son’s victory over death as well asher presence with the apostles in the upper roomprayerfully awaiting the descent of the Holy Spirit atPentecost.During this month of May, we pay special honor toour Blessed Mother. In 1965, Pope Paul VI wrote ashort encyclical on the month of May. He wrote thatMay is an occasion for a “moving tribute of faith andlove which Catholics in every part of the world pay tothe Queen of Heaven. During this month Christians, both in church and in the privacy of the home, offerup to Mary from their hearts an especially fervent andloving homage of prayer and veneration. In thismonth, too, the benefits of God’s mercy come downThe Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate currently have more than one thousand professedmembers taking care of the poor and elderly. They also run special schools for persons whoare mentally challenged, children who are deafand blind, and people who are terminally illwho have no one to care for.Fr. Joseph Varickamackal, currently the Pastorof St. Anthony Parish, Bryan, TX, and a passionate supporter of this San Jose Home forSeniors project will represent the Assisi Sistersof Mary Immaculate to do this appeal to ourparish community.
