Knight Law Center, a renovation and addition to the KnightLibrary, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, Autzen Stadium, and the LillisBusiness Complex, and the construction of a new Student Recreation Centerand Zebrafish Stock Center.The University also added a host of new centers and institutes, including theLewis Center for Neuroimaging, the Oregon Center for Optics, the Instituteon Violence and Destructive Behavior, and the Center for Diversity andCommunity; doubled the federal grants awarded annually; and added nineteennew degree programs, including bachelor’s degrees in biochemistry and ethnicstudies and a master of fine arts degree in dance. The undergraduate programwas assessed and revitalized under the leadership of the provost through thecampus-wide Process for Change. And, the football team went to the RoseBowl, the University published the internationally acclaimed Second Editionof the Atlas of Oregon, and 396 new tenure track faculty were hired.Frohnmayer is the first native Oregonian to be president of any largeresearch university in the state. He was born in Medford. He and his wife,Lynn, are founders of the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund, Inc., and he is oneof the founding directors of the National Marrow Donor Program.He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College, attended OxfordUniversity on a Rhodes Scholarship, and received his law degree from theUniversity of California at Berkeley. He has received honorary degrees fromWillamette University and the University of Portland and is a fellow of theAmerican Academy of Arts and Sciences. Among his many duties, Williams directly supervisedintercollegiate athletics.Williams also presided over the department as director of athletics for 11months in 1994-95, a period that will be remembered as one of unparalleledsuccess with an appearance in the Rose Bowl and NCAA bids in both men’sand women’s basketball.He selected his successor in May 1995 with the appointment of Bill Moosas athletics director and presided over an extensive study that resulted inthe decision to add women’s soccer, in a concerted effort of increasingthe opportunity for women to participate and compete in intercollegiateathletics.A political science major, the Astoria native graduated from Oregon in1962, also serving as ASUO student body president his senior year. Hereceived his master’s degree in public administration from the Universityof San Francisco in 1980. Prior to coming to Oregon as director of housingand associate dean of students in 1980, he was a student affairs officer atStanford University.Williams serves on the Board of Directors of Oregon Forest ResourcesInstitute, Volunteers in Medicine Clinic, Liberty Bank and Bi-MartCorporation. He also serves as a consultant to the Papé Group.
