Since 1998, this innovative program hascombined classroom learning, cutting edge research and a wide range ofclinical experiences to provide students with a truly comprehensiveacademic and clinical education. The University of Florida’s Audiologyprogram has been recognized as one of the nation’s top Au.D.programs. In 2008, U.S. News & World Report placed Florida’s Doctorof Audiology Program 6th in rankings among all U.S. graduate audiologyprograms.The DegreeThe 30 Best Careers in 2009 (U.S. News and World Report, Dec.11,2008) cited job satisfaction among the reasons audiologists were listedin the top thirty best careers. An Au.D. from the University of Florida willplace you in a position to take advantage of career opportunities in thisfield. This credential will continually provide recognition for you,throughout your professional career, no matter where it may take you.Our graduates are qualified to embark on a career in professionalaudiology and are eligible for state licensure and for certification from theAmerican Board of Audiology and the American Speech-LanguageHearing Association.Application RequirementsApplicants are required to submit an online application with: three lettersof recommendation, a personal statement, complete post-secondarytranscripts, and an official report of the GRE. TOEFL scores are alsorequired for international applicants.EligibilityApplicants should hold at least an earned U.S. bachelor’s degree (or itsinternational equivalent). Applicants holding an earned U.S. graduatedegree are also encouraged to apply (with the GRE requirement beingwaived). Additional admission details are available on our website.Program Options:Four-yearThe 4-year Au.D. program is designed forthose individuals entering with an earnedbachelor’s degree in any field. This 45month program starts in August.Two-yearThe 2-year Au.D. program is designed forstudents with a Master’s degree inAudiology with little or no professional workexperience. The 24-month program startsin August.“Employment of audiologists is expected togrow 10 percent from 2006 to 2016, about asfast as the average for all occupations. Hearingloss is strongly associated with aging, so rapidgrowth in older population groups will causethe number of people with hearing and balanceimpairments to increase markedly. Medicaladvances also are improving the survival rateof premature infants and trauma victims, whothen need assessment and sometimestreatment. While 75students apply to the program annually, we only enrollabout fifteen students per academic year.Devon Weist, Au.D.The Graduate School has not established a minimumstandard for the combined GRE score for applicants.Applicants average approximately 1080, and thoseaccepted to the program average 1140. An applicant'sGRE score, however, is only one measure used in thecontext of a holistic credential review process by theadmissions committee. All applications are reviewed byeach member of the admissions committee, and all areconsidered for admission.The FacultyOur nationally recognized faculty reflect forward thinkingapproaches to graduate education and provide studentswith exposure to academic, clinical, and researchcoursework that is innovative and on the cutting edge ofthe profession. Areas of specialty include but are notlimited to: auditory physiology, noise induced hearing loss,vestibular disorders, auditory processing disorders,cochlear implants, audiologic rehabilitation, centralmechanisms of hearing, and psychoacoustics.Awards and PresentationsStudents and faculty in the On-Campus Au.D. programregularly present research projects at national meetings ofthe American Academy of Audiology, American Board ofAudiology and the Association for Research inOtolaryngology. Audiology graduate students have beenawarded the American Academy of Audiology StudentResearch Award. Each year the American Academy ofAudiology awards only five of these highly competitiveStudent Research awards to graduate students. Studentshave also received the Leo Doerfler Memorial Scholarshipfrom the Audiology Foundation of America as well as theAudiology Foundation of America's (AFA) OutstandingStudent Scholarships. The ExperienceStudents in the On-Campus Au.D. program enjoya wide array of experiences in the practice ofdiagnostic and rehabilitative audiology as well ascoursework in theoretical and applied audiologicsciences and research. In conjunction with theirsupervisory committees, a graduate program isdeveloped for each student to meet his or herspecific needs and interests. Interweavingpractice with knowledge, the program providesstudents with the complex and diverse skillsnecessary to meet the challenges of a rapidlychanging hearing health care field.The University of Florida is home to many worldclass healthcare facilities. Audiology studentshave access to these facilities which includeleading-edge technology and research facilities aswell as an internationally renowned faculty.The Speech and Hearing Center located withinthe Shands Teaching Hospital complex is theclinical service of the Department ofCommunicative Disorders. The Center is thearea's premier facility for the diagnosis andtreatment of hearing, speech and languagedisorders. The Center focuses on the provision ofhearing healthcare services while emphasizinginnovative educational programs and cutting-edgeapplied research.During their fourth year, students participate in anexternship which puts their skills and knowledgeto work in a full-time, professional experience.Faculty mentors assist students in finding aplacement that meets each student’s individualinterests and goals.
