Art—Studio ArtBachelor of ArtsThe Bachelor of Arts degree provides a broadstudy of the visual arts based on a solid foundationin several studio disciplines and art history.Building around the core of the liberal artscurriculum, studio art majors first complete aseries of foundation and introductory coursesin two- and three-dimensional design. Studentsthen select a concentration in one of seven areas:Ceramics, Drawing, Graphic Design, Painting,Photography, Printmaking or Sculpture. Studentsare encouraged to continue experiments outsidetheir concentration area to gain a wider workingknowledge of the arts.The Bachelor of Arts is recommended forstudents who seek depth of study in the fine artswhile still exploring professional options outsidethe field. Child DevelopmentBachelor of ScienceThe Child Development major builds a strongliberal arts foundation with a focus on psychologyand child development accompanied by professional experience in settings that serve childrenand families.Colby-Sawyer is an approved professional educatorpreparation program in New Hampshire. Studentsseeking New Hampshire Teacher Certification inEarly Childhood Education (N-3) complete thedegree requirements for the B.S. in Child Development and qualify for certification by completingadditional coursework in Education.Program HighlightsThe college’s early childhood laboratory school,Windy Hill School, is housed in Colby-Sawyer’sfirst building designed to be LEED-certified andhas toddler, nursery school and kindergartenprograms. EnglishBachelor of ArtsWith its focus on literary studies, the Englishmajor offers students opportunities for personaland professional growth as they read, think andwrite about a broad range of texts which challengethem to question, shape and order the humanexperience. English majors work closely with facultyto study texts in relation to literary tradition, theirown lives and various cultures.English is the ideal program for students whoplan to pursue careers in industries that demandwell developed critical thinking, writing, communication and problem-solving skills.Program HighlightsWord Order, the club for English majors, hostsguest artists, film screenings, writing workshopsand other events related to literary studies. The Environmental Studies Department buildson the strengths of two types of students whoshare a common passion: For those whose interestin the environment has a more scientific focus,there is the Environmental Science major. Thosewith a more interdisciplinary interest will feelat home in the Environmental Studies major. Bothmajors feature a professional focus and providestudents with the skills they need to move directlyfrom college into the work force. The programsalso prepare students for graduate study in law andany number of other fields.testing is available. Other resources includethe fields, pond and 100-acre forest on campus,a weather monitoring station and the LakeSunapee Region’s natural resources.In both programs, students develop a sense andvision of nature while exploring the world’s naturalcommunities and gain greater understanding ofthe environmental issues and changes we all faceas inhabitants of one small planet.Colby-Sawyer faculty and students run a N.H.Department of Environmental Services waterquality laboratory on campus that processessamples from area lakes.Program HighlightsThe third-year project is the definingcharacteristic of the Environmental Studiesand Environmental Science majors. Studentsare immersed in an in-depth, year-long analysisof a local environmental problem or issuethat requires detailed field work and extendedsite visits, analysis and collaboration.Ongoing applied science projects on campusinclude a maple sugaring operation, a treenursery and an organic garden.The Environmental Studies Department wasrecognized with substantial support from theNational Science Foundation to expand studentlearning and research opportunities.Colby-Sawyer College is affiliated with theSchool for Field Studies and qualified studentsmay study in Australia, Costa Rica, Kenya,Mexico or Turks & Caicos.The laboratory facilities of the Curtis L. IveyScience Center include a spatial ecology lab forworking with Geographic Information Systems(GIS) and GPS equipment. Stationary andmobile lab equipment for air, water and soilField studies courses focusing on desert,marine, alpine and river ecosystems have travelcomponents in Arizona, Martha’s Vineyard,the White Mountains of New Hampshire andColorado.

Health Care ManagementBachelor of ScienceThe Health Care Management major, part of theBusiness Administration Department, preparesstudents for leadership roles in the U.S. health caresystem by providing a solid foundation in theliberal arts. NursingBachelor of ScienceStudents apply directly to Colby-Sawyer’s NursingProgram, and if admitted, begin taking nursingcourses during their first year and clinical trainingduring their sophomore year. They learn in arigorous climate of success supported by exceptional faculty and staff who integrate the professional education required for nursing practice withthe liberal arts and sciences. The program’s corecomponents ensure that our students develop theknowledge and skills essential to the role of theprofessional nurse.Students begin preparing for their NationalCouncil Licensure Examination for RegisteredNurses (NCLEX-RN) during their first nursingcourse and seniors have a year-long NCLEXpreparatory course.The 2011 first-attempt pass rate of the NCLEXRN was 95.6 percent.Clinical Education OpportunitiesDartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC),30 minutes north of New London, considers ColbySawyer its own undergraduate nursing programand DHMC nurses help educate our students inthe laboratory and in clinical settings.As sophomores, students spend one day each weekin a clinical setting. During junior year and fall ofthe senior year, nursing students spend two days aweek in a clinical setting. Hospital-based clinicalrotations include rotations in medical-surgical,pediatrics, obstetrics and mental health nursing.Application RequirementsIn spring of their senior year, students do asemester-long preceptorship and work one-on-onewith a nurse-preceptor in a clinical setting underthe guidance of Nursing faculty. Preceptorshipsettings have included: hematology special care,post-anesthesia care, emergency department,cardiac intervention and pediatrics. This experiencefacilitates the transition from the role of studentto graduate nurse.Successful applicants will demonstrate thefollowing academic record from their high school:3.3 GPA in college preparatory course work; threeyears of high school science including chemistry;three years of high school level math includingAlgebra II.Program HighlightsCareer PathsColby-Sawyer is the nursing school forDHMC and all required clinical experiencescan be completed there.Nursing students in their sophomore year joinfirst-year medical students from DartmouthCollege for inter-professional courses at DHMC.Students train in the state-of-the-art PatientSafety and Simulation Center at DHMC.Students receive preference for preceptorshipsand externships at DHMC, as well as in hiringafter graduation.Students learn from 22 highly qualified facultymembers, 75 percent of whom practice atDHMC. All faculty have current knowledge andskills in their fields of study.22With a B.S. in nursing, graduates can work inhospitals, home care, schools and clinics, casemanagement, health administration, pharmaceutical sales and enter military service as anofficer.Most seniors graduate with jobs already waiting for them, and though they can go anywhere,many choose to remain in the greater NewLondon area by accepting positions at DHMC.Other graduates continue their education tobecome advanced practice nurses. With a B.S.in nursing, graduates can pursue graduate workin nursing (nurse-practitioner, nurse-midwife,teaching), health policy, law and public health.

PhilosophyBachelor of ArtsBy studying some of the greatest works of humanthought, the Philosophy major fosters openness ofmind; development of reasoned opinions andcommunication; critical, creative and independentthinking; plus information management andresearch and writing skills. The study of philosophyleads to deeper understanding of intellectualhistory and engagement with the meaning andvalue of human life.Program HighlightsFaculty who teach philosophy courses includepublished authors who specialize in socialand political philosophy, the philosophy of art,ethics and the philosophy of gender. PsychologyBachelor of ArtsPsychology is an energetic and dynamic majorthat focuses on contemporary psychologicalhealth care. The major integrates theory, research,practice and self-awareness. Students examinebehavior and mental process using the scientificmethod and apply their knowledge to bothlaboratory and clinical settings.The program provides students with breadthand depth of knowledge and skills in psychologywith the opportunity to focus their studies in avariety of areas including developmental psychology, counseling and abnormal psychology, andresearch design and analysis.
