Commencement ProfilesDr. Joseph A. ( Jay) Morgan has served as the 14thpresident of Morehead State University since July 1,2017. His focus at MSU has been on student success,performance outcomes, academic excellence, as well asuniversity rankings and responsiveness to the region.Prior to service at MSU, Dr. Morgan served as thestate-wide chief academic officer and vice president foracademic affairs and student success for the KentuckyCouncil on Postsecondary Education in Frankfort.Before state-wide service at the Council, Dr. Morgan served as provost and vicepresident for academic affairs at Murray State University, as well as associateprovost, university faculty regent, leadership program director, graduateprogram coordinator, and professor/teacher educator. He also has early careerservice as an entrepreneur, as well as being a high school teacher and coach.Dr. Morgan holds a Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University, a B.S. and anM.S. from Murray State University, and completed a graduate track for schoolsuperintendent, as well as a certificate in management from VanderbiltUniversity.Dr. Morgan currently serves on the Council of Presidents of the Ohio ValleyAthletic Conference/ Division 1, among other boards. He is a former board oftrustees and executive council member of the Southern Association of Collegeand Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). He has also served as aboard member of a medical university, vice chair of a public university board,an economic development board, a bank board, the Kentucky EducationalProfessional Standards Board administering public school teacher licensingand educational standards, and on several foundation boards and financialboards. Additionally, his former public service includes four terms as anelected member of a city council, board president of a chamber of commerce,board chair of the United Way, was formerly named Citizen of the Year, is aRotarian, and has been involved with economic development, banking andother regional initiatives. He has taught, worked and traveled in more than 15countries for academics, business, research, and development.Since joining MSU, the University has broken records for private fundraisingfor scholarships, student retention, U.S. News and World Report rankings, aswell as logged several athletic championships.6
Commencement ProfilesDalton Cole Lewis of Sterling, Virginia, will serve ascommencement speaker representing the College ofScience. He is the son of Steve and Celesta Lewis. Hewill graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Physics –Mechanical Engineering Area.Lewis is a recipient of the Non-Resident MeritScholarship and he made the Dean’s List everysemester as a student and maintained a 4.0 GPA. Heparticipated in an Undergraduate Research Fellowshipworking with Physics Professor Dr. Ignacio Birriel examining safety equipmentusing prototypes to test concussive force to helmet and player.He also volunteered with Physics Professor Dr. Jennifer Birriel to help teachlessons in her Introduction to Physics and Engineering Professions course. Herecently completed an engineering internship with Rockland Manufacturing inBedford, Pennsylvania.Lewis was an offensive lineman for Eagle Football and made the PioneerFootball League Honor Roll each season. He was also presented with the MSUSledgehammer Award for Toughness in 2019.During his time at MSU, he participated in Freshmen Move-In Day each yearas a volunteer helping new students and families. He also volunteered at thelocal recycling center and Lowes Island Elementary School in a special needsclassroom in his hometown. He also has been an Eagle Scout with the BoyScouts of America.Lewis plans to attend Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in Spring 2022to study mechanical engineering. His career goals are to work as a mechanicalengineer in the automotive or heavy machinery industry.7
Commencement ProfilesAnthony Kyle Gibson of Ashland will serve ascommencement speaker representing the CaudillCollege of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Heis the son of Anthony and Kimberly Gibson, and PamWelch. He will graduate with a Bachelor of SocialWork degree.Gibson previously served in the United States MarineCorps and earned an associate degree from AshlandCommunity and Technical College before transferringto MSU in 2019. During his two years in the social work program, he made theDean’s List every semester, maintaining a 3.93 GPA.Before enrolling at MSU, he was a supervising peer mentor at Transitions’Grateful Life Center and peer support specialist/residential aid for PathwaysResidential Plus. He has earned multiple certifications as a support andrecovery specialist for drug and alcohol dependency. While completing hisdegree, Gibson became a registered alcohol and drug peer support specialistfor Pathways Outpatient. He co-facilitated intensive outpatient care in this roleand provided person-centered recovery from January 2018 to May 2020. Hewas the keynote speaker at the 2020 Bridges Out of Addiction Symposiumhosted by the Healthy Choices, Healthy Communities Coalition and currentlyserves as an authorization lead/counselor/case manager at Riverside RecoveryServices.A member of the Boyd County Quick Response Team for Opioid OverdoseResponse Board, from 2019 to 2020, he will be serving for two years as thetreasurer of the NASW Pace Committee upon graduation. He has securedpracticum placement with the National Association of Social Workers(NASW), Kentucky Chapter.He and his wife, Courtney, have four children: Jasmine, Braxton, Kevin andGabriel. He also coaches wrestling at the Ashland Area Wrestling Club, wherehe works with kids aged 4 to 7. He said being a coach is one of his favorite titlesnext to being a parent.He will pursue a Master of Social Work degree at the University of Kentuckyand gain dual licensures to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and aLicensed Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor.8
