COUNTDOWNTEAM SCOTLAND NEWSLETTERIssue 25 – Winter 2016/17Congratulations to our 13 winnersTeam Scotland Scottish Sports AwardsThe inaugural Team Scotland Scottish Sports Awards in September provedto be a star-studded celebration, with more than 50 Scottish Olympians andParalympians from the Games in Rio joining 600 guests from across sportand business, at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.Also doubling as the public launch of thenew Team Scotland brand, which createda stunning backdrop, the evening was afitting tribute to both the achievementsof Scotland’s greatest athletes and thesuccess of individuals, schools, clubsand teams across the country.Widening the scope of the awardsoutside the realm of CommonwealthGames sports, Team Scotland steppedup its role as cheerleader for all ofScottish sport, with well-deservedawards made across 13 categories.Taking centre stage were the remarkableachievements of Andy Murray. Followingan outstanding season that saw him lift asecond Wimbledon crown, become thefirst player to defend an Olympic singlestitle and help Britain to a historic firstDavis Cup win for 79 years, Andy Murrayadded another accolade, as winner ofthe Emirates Lonsdale Trophy and 2016Scottish Sportsperson of the Year. WithAndy still on the trail to claim the covetedposition of World number one, the awardwas collected by his extremely proudgrandparents Roy and Shirley Erskine.Overall it was a special night for tennis,with Britain’s Davis Cup Team namedTeam of the Year, and Gordon Reid Parasport Athlete of the Year, following a firstGrand Slam singles title at the AustralianOpen, Wimbledon singles and doublestitles and Paralympic gold and silver.Roy and Shirley enjoy the limelightHosted by double Olympic gold medallistShirley Robertson, OBE and comedianFred MacAulay, guests had a specialopportunity to hear first-hand fromScotland’s Rio 2016 stars, with severalfeaturing as award winners and manyothers taking to the stage as awardpresenters.There was also an emotionalpresentation to Commonwealth Gamesjudo silver medallist, Stephanie Inglis.She was awarded Team Scot of the Year,marking her determined battle back tohealth, following a horrific motor bikeaccident in Vietnam earlier this year.Entertainment included a stirring setfrom Dougie MacLean, whilst stunt bikegroup The Clan provided an exhilaratinglead in to the other big news of the nightas Clyde, the face of the Glasgow 2014Commonwealth Games, was revealedas the new Team Scotland mascot. UPDATEGold Coast promises to deliverWith the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games just 16 months away,Team Scotland’s recently appointed General Team Management (GTM)undertook a busy site visit to Queensland, where they received anextremely warm welcome from organising committee representatives.The team took part in a useful rangeof meetings and presentations acrossall key areas of Games planning andpreparations, which clearly demonstratedthat things are well on track for April2018. These were followed by a visit tothe Games Village location, where greatprogress is being made with the newdevelopment, which will house 6500athletes and officials during the Gamesin a mixture of apartment blocks andtownhouses. The overall aesthetic designof the Village will undoubtedly add to anunforgettable experience for all athletesof the Commonwealth.An extensive competition venue tour,which included the Carrara Stadiumwhich will stage the athletics plus theOpening and Closing Ceremonies,was also undertaken. This generatedgreat confidence that these first classcompetition venues will inspire eachand every athlete, creating amazingand memorable sporting momentsthroughout the Games.Coolangatta pupils enjoy Team Scotland visit4Developing Games landscapeGames mascot Borobi stops by to say helloThe visit to the Gold Coast AquaticCentre, where both the swimming anddiving will be staged, was definitely ahighlight, with an impromptu meetingwith Borobi, the Games mascot. We lookforward to introducing him to Clyde whenwe return for the Games!CGS Chair, Paul Bush OBE and ChiefExecutive Jon Doig OBE also took theopportunity to meet with youngstersfrom Coolangatta State School, as partAthletes village well on the way to completion!of event’s Schools Connect programme.They were treated to afternoon teaAustralian style, complete with thefamous Vegemite sandwiches andLamington cakes.The next site visit will be in May whenthe sport team managers, who will beappointed early in 2017, will be able tofamiliarise themselves with their sportsvenues and meet competition organisers.Finished village

Selection windowopensMayor Jamieson welcomes Team Scotland MOUFollowing the publication of theCGS General Selection Policy andStandards for Gold Coast 2018 atthe end of 2015, CGS has workedclosely with all 18 sports on theprogramme, producing a clear andobjective sport specific policy andstandards. This will ensure that everyathlete is aware of what they have toachieve to be selected to representTeam Scotland.Sunshine Coast to host Team CampPrior to meeting Games organisers on the Gold Coast, Team Scotlandofficials visited the Sunshine Coast, a two-hour drive north, to finaliseplans for its pre-Games Team Camp, signing a memorandum ofunderstanding with Sunshine Coast Council.Up to 300 athletes and support staff willpass through the team’s official overseaspreparation camp at the Novotel TwinWaters Resort, whilst the excellent sportsfacilities at University of the SunshineCoast and other public and privatevenues will be used for training. Athleteswill stay for 48 hours up to three weeksbefore the Games begin.Team Scotland Chef de Mission, JonDoig OBE believes the Sunshine Coastprovides a great range of facilities andwill be the ideal environment to ensureathletes are well prepared for the Games.He said: “The key to Scotland’s successhas always been in our planning andpreparation and the Team Camp plays avital part in developing our strong teamethos and ensuring everyone is in thebest possible shape for the Games.“We have spent considerabletime with all 18 sportsidentifying the best possiblelocation for their specific needsand for the vast majority, thefacilities and environmenton the Sunshine Coast andat Twin Waters in particular,will undoubtedly provide theideal home from home for theathletes as they adjust to thetravel, climate, culture and theunique multi-sport environmentof the Commonwealth Games.“Some sports will come outrequiring full training facilities,whilst others will be lookingfor rest and relaxation aheadof competition, so it’s aboutdifferent things for differentsports. However our priority isenabling them all to come through andacclimatise for the Games that will beheld in a warm Australian autumn whenwe are coming from a cold Scottishwinter.”Commonwealth Games ScotlandChairman, Paul Bush OBE added: “Iam delighted that we have now signeda memorandum of understanding withthe Sunshine Coast and we are excitedabout working closely with colleaguesthere and in Gold Coast to deliver ourbest ever overseas CommonwealthGames performance.”The Team Scotland Team Camp on theSunshine Coast is being supportedby sportscotland as part of its overallinvestment in CGS and is also benefitingfrom support from the Sunshine CoastCouncil and its partners.The majority of sports have alreadypublished these in advance of thestart of the selection window on 1January 2017. The initial phase ofselection will commence from 30August and close 30 November2017, with the final team selectionfollowing the closing of the selectionwindow on 14 February 2018.For the first time, the CommonwealthGames Federation has introduced aquota for the number of athletes thateach country, including Scotland,can enter into the Games. As a resultour team selections will comply withthis condition.CGS is delighted to announcethe continuation of the ‘Achieve’programme for a third successiveGames. Aspiring young athletesand coaches will have a fabulousopportunity to experience GoldCoast 2018 as part of a structuredlearning and developmentprogramme in preparation fortheir own participation in futuremajor sporting events, includingCommonwealth Youth Games andCommonwealth Games.For Gold Coast, this programmewill be led jointly by AchieveDirectors Mary McClung and ScottForrest, both former internationalathletes, who were also involvedin this programme during theGlasgow 2014 Games. Togetherthey aim to develop and deliverthe best ever Achieve programme,bringing extensive experience fromtheir full-time roles as PerformanceLifestyle Advisers within thesportscotland Institute of Sport.Details of the programme and theselection process will be sharedwith sports in due course.Athletes will prepare at Twin Waters resort5

Record breaking Queen’sBaton Relay revealed with500 days to goGames Ambassador SallyPearson shows off the BatonTo mark 500 days to go until the 2018Commonwealth Games get underway, the GoldCoast Organising Committee (GOLDOC) hasrevealed the design and route for the Queen’sBaton Relay (QBR). One of the most iconicsymbols of the ‘Friendly’ Games, the QBRcelebrates the Commonwealth’s diversity, inspirescommunity pride and excites people about theworld-class festival of sport and culture to come.Designed for each Games bythe host nation, the Queen’sBaton bears a personalmessage to the athletes ofthe Commonwealth from HerMajesty Queen Elizabeth II,which is carried by thousandsof batonbearers on a journeyfrom Buckingham Palace tothe Opening Ceremony, wherethe message is read out.Leaving London on Commonwealth Day,13 March 2017, the Baton will embark onthe longest and most accessible relay inGames history, covering 230,000km over388 days, as it makes its way throughthe six Commonwealth regions of Africa,the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe,Asia and Oceania.For the first time, the Baton will bepresent at the Commonwealth YouthGames, which take place inNassau, Bahamas from 18-23July, before arriving in Scotlandin August 2017.The distinctive loop designof the Baton is made ofmacadamia wood andreclaimed plastic sourced fromGold Coast waterways andinspired by the region’s vibrant spirit andindigenous heritage. It will takeplace in the capital Nassau, venue for the prestigious IAAF World Relaysevent in 2014 and 2015.The Opening Ceremony will take placeon 18 July and will be followed by fivedays of competition from 19-23 July. Andin keeping with tradition, a cultural weekis scheduled to run alongside the Gamesto allow athletes to mix with their peersfrom around the Commonwealth andlearn about other cultures.The Youth Games is a fantasticopportunity for young athletes tounderstand the unique environment ofa multi-sport event and gain invaluableexperience to help them in theirambitions to represent and win medalsfor Team Scotland atfuture CommonwealthGames.The selection period is currently openand will close on 30 April 2017. Athletesare already aware of what they arerequired to achieve to gain selection forTeam Scotland.Team Scotland’s meticulous planningand preparations are well under wayand will continue in earnest in 2017to ensure the selected athletes havethe opportunity to perform at theirbest, while absorbing everything theexperience has to offer.Island hotels will form the VillageTeam Scotlandwill select up to 39athletes to participatein six sports, withpotential additionalrepresentation inbeach volleyball andrugby 7s still to beconfirmed. The sportsprogramme will seejudo make its YouthColin Gregor to lead Youth Games TeamCongratulations to former Team Scotland Rugby 7s star, ColinGregor, who has been appointed as General Team Manager for theBahamas 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games.Scotland 7s’ most capped player andthird highest points scorer of all-time,Colin represented Team Scotland at twoCommonwealth Games, including ascaptain at Glasgow 2014. Now a Directoron the CGS Board, Colin is also a memberof the International Rugby Players’Association Player Advisory Board andwas the sole representative for rugby at theInternational Olympic Committee AthleteForum.Colin will be responsible for the overallleadership, motivation and unity of theteam at Bahamas 2017 and is keen toshare his extensive sporting experiencewith the next generation of Team Scotlandathletes.“I am delighted to be appointed to suchan important position,” he said. “TheYouth Games are a fantastic opportunityfor exciting young athletes to experiencea multi-sport event and it’s so importantthat they have a positive first experienceof competing for Team Scotland.
