WelcomeDear Brothers (and Sisters!),Welcome to Together for the Gospel 2012. Each time wegather is a gift from God. We pray he would use thesedays to encourage us in our calling as pastors, undershepherds, and most fundamentally, Christian disciples.Last time we considered the Unadjusted Gospel—standing firm for the truth, unaltered, always fulland sufficient. This time we want to consider the Underestimated Gospel. The goal is to meditate on, not justthe outlines of the gospel’s content, but the outworkingof its power.Thank you for taking the time and expense to come.We have been praying, along with many of you, thatGod will bless the messages and singing, the fellowshipand literature, to equip his ministers, strengthen hischurches, and glorify his name.We treat each T4G conference as its own, as if it’sthe last one we will do. Coordinating schedules, gettingtime to pray and plan and talk is challenging. We eachhave our own churches that we’re responsible for. Each time is a privilege, too. All of us—includingour churches—feel the privilege of serving and leading agathering like this. We do not take it lightly. There are some new things about this year’s conference. Perhaps most notable is the location. We hope itwill provide more comfort, service, and capacity. (Youshould all be able to make it to the bathroom during ourbreaks!) And then there’s the free bookstore. The chairsin this arena keep us from laying out free books as in thepast, so we have the Zero Dollar Bookstore. More info onthat to come in our first session.45

Also new is missing R.C. Sproul and John MacArthur. While this saddens us, both men wish us well andassure us of their prayers, but said that circumstancesprevented them from coming. We thank God for themessages we have heard from them at previous T4Gsand are thankful for them in so many other ways. Howmany of us are here today because of their legacy? In their place, we’ve asked three younger preachers to come and help us. Matt Chandler of The VillageChurch in Dallas loves God and his Word and is gifted topreach it clearly and compellingly. Kevin DeYoung ofUniversity Reformed Church in East Lansing, Michigan, isa careful reader of God’s Word and a sharp andpassionate preacher of it. And David Platt of The Churchat Brook Hills, Birmingham, is captured by God’s glory, and gives himself relentlessly to share God’s Wordin his own church as well as in places where the gospelis little known and where Christians face persecution.Leading up to this conference, all three brothers havejoined us for fellowship, conversations, and prayer, and they have enriched us. We look forward to sharingthis time and hearing God’s Word from them.Something else that’s new is new topics for theWednesday breakout sessions—from Mike McKinley onmaking sure you’re a Christian to sessions on the inerrancy, historicity, and trustworthiness of Scripture. Whileyou can only attend one since they are simultaneous, youwill be able to listen to all of them online later.Okay, one more change while I’ve got your attention. We’re doing post-talk panels a little differently. We’ll be splitting up the panels between differentparticipants and devoting them to particular topics thatwe think will be useful for pastors. Hopefully they willprove very edifying.6Some things, though, will stay the same at thisyear’s T4G. We have the same message—the gospel thatis unadjusted is the gospel that is underestimated. In theAffirmations & Denials (see page 40) you can re-readthose commitments. The purpose of this gathering is thesame—to build up and encourage pastors and churchleaders as we come together for the gospel.Bob Kauflin and the singing have been a highlighteach year. The unusual approach we take to the exhibitors and the bookstore still applies—every ministry andbook comes recommended. We mean this to be anequipping time. And once again, we have been joined by ThabitiAnyabwile (expositor extraordinaire) and John Piper(our generation’s God-given, truth-wielding, adjectivecombining, soul-stirring, Bible-explaining, heart-warming, Christ-exalting, sacrifice-demanding, joy-promisingpreacher).Pray that God will pour out his Spirit on his churches and on us during these days. That’s the prayer of yourbrothers and servants,Mark Dever,For Ligon Duncan, C.J. Mahaney, & Albert Mohler.7

We affirm that evangelicalcongregations are to work togetherin humble and voluntary cooperationand that the spiritual fellowship ofGospel congregations bears witnessto the unity of the Church and theglory of God.We deny that loyalty to any denomination or fellowship of churchescan take precedence over theclaims of truth and faithfulness tothe Gospel.Article XV, Affirmationa & Denials — Page 4089

Affirmations & DenialsWe are brothers in Christ unitedin one great cause—to standtogether for the Gospel. We areconvinced that the Gospel ofJesus Christ has been misrepresented, misunderstood, andmarginalized in many churchesand among many who claim thename of Christ. Compromise ofthe Gospel has led to thepreaching of false gospels, theseduction of many minds andmovements, and the weakeningof the church’s Gospel witness. As in previous moments oftheological and spiritual crisis inthe church, we believe that theanswer to this confusion andcompromise lies in a comprehensive recovery and reaffirmationof the Gospel—and in Christiansbanding together in Gospelchurches that display God’sglory in this fallen world.40We are also brothers united indeep concern for the church andthe Gospel. This concern isspecifically addressed to certaintrends within the church today. We are concerned about thetendency of so many churches tosubstitute technique for truth, therapy for theology, andmanagement for ministry. We are also concerned thatGod’s glorious purpose forChrist’s church is often eclipsedin concern by so many otherissues, programs, technologies, and priorities. Furthermore, confusion over crucial questionsconcerning the authority of theBible, the meaning of the Gospel, and the nature of truth itself hasgravely weakened the church interms of its witness, its work, andits identity. We stand together for theGospel—and for a full andgladdening recovery of theGospel in the church. We areconvinced that such a recoverywill be evident in the form offaithful Gospel churches, eachbearing faithful witness to theglory of God and the power ofthe Gospel of Jesus Christ.Article IWe affirm that the sole authorityfor the Church is the Bible, verbally inspired, inerrant, infallible, and totally sufficientand trustworthy. We deny that the Bible is amere witness to the divinerevelation, or that any portion ofScripture is marked by error orthe effects of human sinfulness.Article IIWe affirm that the authority andsufficiency of Scripture extends tothe entire Bible, and thereforethat the Bible is our final authorityfor all doctrine and practice. We deny that any portion ofthe Bible is to be used in an effortto deny the truthfulness ortrustworthiness of any otherportion. We further deny anyeffort to identify a canon withinthe canon or, for example, to setthe words of Jesus against thewritings of Paul.Article IVWe affirm the centrality of expository preaching in the church andthe urgent need for a recovery ofbiblical exposition and the publicreading of Scripture in worship. We deny that God-honoringworship can marginalize orneglect the ministry of the Wordas manifested through expositionand public reading. We furtherdeny that a church devoid of truebiblical preaching can survive asa Gospel church.Article VIIWe affirm that Jesus Christ is trueGod and true Man, in perfect, undiluted, and unconfused unionthroughout his incarnation andnow eternally. We also affirm thatChrist died on the cross as asubstitute for sinners, as asacrifice for sin, and as a propitiation of the wrath of God towardsinners. We affirm the death, burial, and bodily resurrection ofChrist as essential to the Gospel. We further affirm that Jesus Christis Lord over His church, and thatChrist will reign over the entirecosmos in fulfillment of theFather’s gracious purpose. We deny that the substitutionary character of Christ’satonement for sin can becompromised without seriousinjury to the Gospel or deniedwithout repudiating the Gospel. We further deny that Jesus Christis visible only in weakness, ratherthan in power, Lordship, or royalreign, or, conversely, that Christ isvisible only in power, and never inweakness.Article VWe affirm that the Bible revealsGod to be infinite in all hisperfections, and thus trulyomniscient, omnipotent, timeless, and self-existent. We furtheraffirm that God possesses perfectknowledge of all things, past, present, and future, including allhuman thoughts, acts, anddecisions. We deny that the God of theBible is in any way limited in termsArticle IIIof knowledge or power or anyWe affirm that truth ever remains other perfection or attribute, ora central issue for the Church, that God has in any way limitedand that the church must resist the his own perfections.Article VIIIallure of pragmatism andWe affirm that salvation is all ofpostmodern conceptions of truth Article VIgrace, and that the Gospel isas substitutes for obedience toWe affirm that the doctrine of the revealed to us in doctrines thatthe comprehensive truth claimsTrinity is a Christian essential, most faithfully exalt God’sof Scripture.bearing witness to the ontologi- sovereign purpose to save sinnersWe deny that truth is merely cal reality of the one true God in and in His determination to savea product of social constructionthree divine persons, Father, Son, his redeemed people by graceor that the truth of the Gospel can and Holy Spirit, each of the same alone, through faith alone, inbe expressed or grounded in any- substance and perfections.Christ alone, to His glory alone.thing less than total confidence inWe deny the claim that theWe deny that any teaching, the veracity of the Bible, theTrinity is not an essential doctrine, theological system, or means ofhistoricity of biblical events, and or that the Trinity can be underpresenting the Gospel that deniesthe ability of language to convey stood in merely economic orthe centrality of God’s grace asunderstandable truth in sentence functional categories. His gift of unmerited favor toform. Article IXWe affirm that the Gospel ofJesus Christ is God’s means ofbringing salvation to His people, that sinners are commanded tobelieve the Gospel, and that thechurch is commissioned to preachand teach the Gospel to allnations. We deny that evangelismcan be reduced to any program, technique, or marketing approach. We further deny thatsalvation can be separatedfrom repentance toward Godand faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.the Gospel. We further deny thatany teaching that separatesregeneration and faith is a truerendering of the Gospel.Article XIIIWe affirm that the righteousnessof Christ is imputed to believersby God’s decree alone, and thatthis righteousness, imputed to thebeliever through faith alone, isthe only righteousness thatjustifies. We deny that such righteousness is earned or deserved in anymanner, is infused within thebeliever to any degree, or isrealized in the believer throughArticle XWe affirm that salvation comes to anything other than faith alone.those who truly believe andArticle XIVconfess that Jesus Christ is Lord.We affirm that the shape ofWe deny that there isChristian discipleship issalvation in any other name, orcongregational, and that God’sthat saving faith can take anyform other than conscious belief purpose is evident in faithfulGospel congregations,in the Lord Jesus Christ and Hiseach displaying God’s glorysaving acts.in the marks of authenticecclesiology.Article XIWe deny that any ChristianWe affirm the continuity of God’ssaving purpose and the Christo- can truly be a faithful disciplelogical unity of the covenants. We apart from the teaching, further affirm a basic distinction discipline, fellowship, andbetween law and grace, and that accountability of a congregationof fellow disciples, organized asthe true Gospel exalts Christ’satoning work as the consummate a Gospel church. We further denyand perfect fulfillment of the law. that the Lord’s Supper canfaithfully be administered apartWe deny that the Biblefrom the right practice of churchpresents any other means ofdiscipline.salvation than God’s graciousacceptance of sinners in Christ.Article XIIWe affirm that sinners arejustified only through faith inChrist, and that justification byfaith alone is both essential andcentral to the Gospel. We deny that any teachingthat minimizes, denies, orconfuses justification by faithalone can be considered true to42Article XVWe affirm that evangelicalcongregations are to worktogether in humble and voluntarycooperation and that the spiritualfellowship of Gospel congregations bears witness to the unity ofthe Church and the glory of God.We deny that loyalty to anydenomination or fellowship ofchurches can take precedenceover the claims of truth andfaithfulness to the Gospel.Article XVIWe affirm that the Scripturereveals a pattern of complementary order between men andwomen, and that this order isitself a testimony to the Gospel, even as it is the gift of our Creatorand Redeemer. We also affirmthat all Christians are called toservice within the body of Christ, and that God has given to bothmen and women important andstrategic roles within the home, the church, and the society. Wefurther affirm that the teachingoffice of the church is assignedonly to those men who are calledof God in fulfillment of thebiblical teachings and that menare to lead in their homes ashusbands and fathers who fearand love God.We deny that the distinctionof roles between men and womenrevealed in the Bible is evidenceof mere cultural conditioning or amanifestation of male oppressionor prejudice against women. Wealso deny that this biblicaldistinction of roles excludeswomen from meaningful ministryin Christ’s kingdom. We furtherdeny that any church can confusethese issues without damaging itswitness to the Gospel.Article XVIIWe affirm that God calls hispeople to display his glory in thereconciliation of the nationswithin the Church, and that God’spleasure in this reconciliation isevident in the gathering ofbelievers from every tongue andtribe and people and nation. Weacknowledge that the staggeringmagnitude of injustice againstAfrican-Americans in the name ofthe Gospel presents a specialopportunity for displaying therepentance, forgiveness, andrestoration promised in theGospel. We further affirm thatevangelical Christianity inAmerica bears a unique responsibility to demonstrate thisreconciliation. We deny that any churchcan accept racial prejudice, discrimination, or division withoutbetraying the Gospel.Article XVIIIWe affirm that our only sure andconfident hope is in the sure andcertain promises of God. Thus, our hope is an eschatologicalhope, grounded in ourconfidence that God will bring allthings to consummation in amanner that will bring greatestglory to his own name, greatestpreeminence to his Son, andgreatest joy for his redeemedpeople. We deny that we are to findultimate fulfillment or happinessin this world, or that God’sultimate purpose is for us to findmerely a more meaningful andfulfilling life in this fallen world. We further deny that anyteaching that offers health andwealth as God’s assured promisesin this life can be considered atrue gospel.43Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preachedto you, which you received, inwhich you stand, and by whichyou are being saved, if you holdfast to the word I preached toyou—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of firstimportance what I also received:that Christ died for our sins inaccordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he wasraised on the third day inaccordance with the Scriptures.1 Corinthians 15:1–4Then I saw another angel flyingdirectly overhead, with aneternal gospel to proclaim tothose who dwell on earth,to every nation and tribe andlanguage and people. Andhe said with a loud voice,“Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgmenthas come, and worship him whomade heaven and earth, the seaand the springs of water.”Revelation 14:6–7
