CASE STUDYRICHARD PARKER OBECHIEF EXECUTIVEinvested in me so Icould go on to postgraduate studies. Anumber of years laterand a few differentpositions at variousorganisations in thearea and I returned in2013 to become theDirector of Nursing,Midwifery and Quality,before advancing onto Chief Executive inJanuary 2017.qualifying as one ofonly two males withinmy graduating class atthe Sheffield School ofNursing in 1985.I’ve spent many happyyears working as aRegistered Nursewithin hospitals inSouth Yorkshire andalso a little bit beyond,mainly within IntensiveCare and Theatres, andnow as Chief Executiveof Doncaster andBassetlaw TeachingHospitals (DBTH), I’mprivileged in that I canlook back on a reallyfulfilling career.Growing up inthe Manor andHackenthorpe areasof Sheffield, I decidedto train to become anurse in the early 1980s,16Once a RegisteredNurse, I worked in avariety of roles andspecialised in intensivecare nursing. As aclinical nurse, eachshift brought with ita new challenge butlooking after patientsand making a realdifference to people’slives makes all of thehard work worthwhile.Over the years Iprogressed to differenthospitals, working atwhat was Doncasterand Montagu Hospitals(now DBTH) in theearly nineties, wherethe organisationWithin the healthservice there is awealth of variety andopportunity, and this iswhat we want to offeryou at DBTH.As you might beaware, the NHS iscurrently facingchallenges when itcomes to workforce –we should see this asan opportunity to dothings differently. ADVANCE Health and Social Care ProspectusCASE STUDYMARTINDIETITIANDietitians are oneof 14 Allied HealthProfessions who workacross a variety ofsettings including thepublic sector and mosttypically in the NHS.All dietitians hold aBSc in Dietetics or arelated science degreewith a post graduatedegree in Dieteticsas a minimumqualification. Entryrequirements on toany dietetics coursewill require a solidbase of knowledgein sciences especiallychemistry and biology.Dietitians are regulatedby the Health and CareProfessions Counciland use evidencebased practice toassess, diagnose andtreat dietary andnutritional problems atan individual and widerpublic-health level.Martin is an NHSdietitian currentlyworking at Doncasterand BassetlawTeaching HospitalsNHS Foundation trust.On leaving school at16, Martin trained asa chef until decidingto change his careerpath and train to be adietitian taking a moreacademic approach toworking with food andnutrition.His career journeyinvolved returning tocollege to sit A-levelsprior to undertakingan undergraduatedegree in Dietetics.Martin started workat Doncaster RoyalInfirmary afterqualifying and haseventually specialisedto become the ClinicalLead Dietitian fornutrition support. Thisincludes managingpatients receivingintravenous nutritionand those on theCritical Care Unit.17

CASE STUDYJAYTRAINEE NURSING ASSOCIATEI started my career inhealthcare five yearsago after my dadpassed away and I wasinspired by those whocared for him. Now,I’m about to finish myfirst year as a TraineeNurse Associate (TNA)at Doncaster andBassetlaw TeachingHospitals and I’m soproud of how far I havecome.I had been aHealthcare Assistant(HCA) for four yearsbefore I joined theTNA course but I reallywanted to go intonursing. But, with threechildren to support, Icouldn’t afford to leavework for three years totake the usual routeinto nursing. Then Iheard about the TNArole which providedan opportunity totake on more dutiesand support nurseson the ward to takethe pressure off someof their workloadand bridge the gapbetween HCAs andNurses.I didn’t have manyqualifications when Ileft school so I returnedto college in 2015 todo maths and Englishand then applied tobecome a TraineeNursing Associate. It’sbeen difficult to goback into learning asan adult but I am reallyenjoying it and I’mexcited to learn more.The role at the Trusthas given me theopportunity to gainsome more experienceand take on moreresponsibilities onmy journey to beinga nurse. I now takehandovers, lead a teamand liaise with doctors.The plan for the futureis to complete the TNAcourse and then do afull Nursing degree.18

CARE WORKER / CARE ASSISTANT /SENIOR CARE WORKER /SUPPORT WORKERCare Workers supportpeople who havedirect care needs.In this role you willsupport people withall aspects of their dayto day living.Care Workers can workin a care home, inpeople’s own homes orin the community. CareWorkers who work inthe community aresometimes calledDomiciliary Carers,which often involvestravelling to differentpeople’s houses. Youcould work with lotsof different peopleincluding adults with24learning disabilities,physical disabilities,substance misuseissues, mental healthconditions and olderpeople.Care Workers dutiescan include but arenot limited to: Booking andgoing with people toappointments. Encouraging andsupporting people tolive as independentlyas possible and doingthe things they wantto do. Supporting people atmeal times witheating and drinking. I workedhard and completedtraining up to a level 5,to enable me to be aRegistered Manager.Compliance Managerin a Nursing Homewhich involved caringfor elderly people.Unfortunately, I wasmade redundant,however with all myprevious experienceI then applied for theSenior Care Assistantjob at The ParklandsResidential Care Home,which is where I worknow.In this time I havealso worked as aNursing Assistant andMy job involves meoverseeing the runningof my shift, makingsure staff are deployedwere they need to beto care for the residentsand I administermedication toresidents. I work withother professionalsinvolved in caringfor our residents likeDoctors, District Nursesand Social Workers.It is my responsibilityto do care plans forall residents andmake sure they areup to date. It is alsoimportant to havegood links withresidents’ familiesand building goodrelationships withthem is part of my job.I like working as partof a team and liketo think I make adifference to the livesof residents I care for.I always take time tochat and enjoy therelationship I havewith them. ADVANCE Health and Social Care ProspectusCASE STUDYDONNACARE ASSISTANTBennfield HouseI started work atBennfield House 10years ago as a cleaner.Whilst I was a cleaner,I was always willingto help out servingbreakfast and assistingresidents who neededhelp to eat their food. Iknow how to cook, soon occasions to coverstaff on holidays andsickness I cooked forthe residents the mealsthey liked and I alsoworked in the laundry.Then I started to helpout with our residentson the care side andfrom the beginningof 2019 I have been aCare Assistant. Sincethen I have completedmy Care Certificateand I am now workingtowards my Level 2qualification in Healthand Social Care.Every day I am involvedin the handover ofinformation from thestaff going home andstaff coming on shift. Iwork with a partner toassist residents gettingup out of bed, goingto the toilet, gettingbathed or showeredand dressed for theday. If a resident needsassistance with cuttingup food, eating a mealand having a drink,then that is part ofmy job.I like working on a rotabasis and do two 12hour shifts a week. Thismeans I have plenty oftime to see my familyand do things I needto do. I live locally, so Idon’t have far to travelto work and if I wantI can pick extra shiftsup to help out, whenother staff are off. I likeworking as part of ateam, “we are like afamily”. I enjoy knowingthe residents and theirfamilies. I get to go outwith residents to thecinema, out for a mealin the local pub, to thelocal shops and thepark in summer.We have a routine tothe shift, but everyday is different, todaywon’t be the same astomorrow.I love my job andwhat I do in my job,by making surethe residents arelooked after andwell cared for.27

CASE STUDYROSEMARYCARERS SUPPORT WORKERDoncaster Carers Reach Out ServiceWhen it comes totalking about my jobrole, it is important thatyou understand I workwith unpaid carers thatare family members orfriends and not CareWorkers, who are inpaid employment.I have always workedin the voluntary sector,previously workingfor Age UK, SouthYorkshire Centrefor Inclusive Living,Doncaster Partnershipfor Carers and Scope,all with a similar rolein supporting carers.I started working forCarers Reach Outservice in 2018.As part of my job role,I attend events topromote the service,myself and three othercolleagues provide28for carers. I also workwith Social Workersand other workersfrom National HealthService. I visit carersin their own homesto provide them withinformation aboutwhat is available tosupport them in theircaring role.
