Welcomefrom the PrincipalThank you for your interest in studying at London School of Theology.LST wasestablishedin 1943 whena groupof Churchleaders andbusinessmendecidedthat therewas needfor a Collegecommittedto theologywithin theEvangelicaltradition, serving the Church in its mission tothe world. There was also a need to equippeople to serve as faithful witnesses to theLord Jesus Christ in the public square. We arestill committed to these priorities and rejoicethat thousands of alumni have been engagedin various ministries around the world.LST has a reputation for being a great place tostudy and grow as a disciple of Jesus Christ.I often say my experience of being a studentat LST (1982-1985) focused on four things andI hope these will be the same for you shouldyou come to study with us.First, theology at LST is located within theholistic context of Christian discipleship. We aim to integrate your learning into anexperience of Christian formation as part ofthe spiritual life of the School. Our devotionallife is central not peripheral to our identityas an Evangelical School of Theology. That iswhy we encourage you not only to study theScriptures in class, but to read them in yourpersonal devotional lives, with others in study04groups and to listen to them expounded inchapel. It is important that you grow in yourpersonal knowledge of the Lord, throughprayer, reflection and action. Spiritualformation is holistic and lifelong; and itincludes the development of godly characterand Christian virtues.Second, studying at LST is truly academic. In our educational mission we aim forthe highest standards as we invite you todevelop your knowledge and skills in theologyand other disciplines such as music andcounselling. While we are rigorous in theway we approach academic study we alsoaccept that our students come from verydiverse educational backgrounds. Alongsideour commitment to academic excellence isalso a commitment to support you in yourstudies, so that you achieve the best possibleoutcome personally.Third, LST is a community of scholars, staffand students, working, and in some cases, living together on campus. We aim to buildrelationships and support each other incommunity, whether that community is oncampus, online or hybrid. This is not alwayseasy. From time to time there will be tensionsand disagreements, but we are committedto building community in respectful, honestand loving relationships. It is likely that you willmake lifelong friendships here because of thedepth of community you experience.Fourth, LST is a place where people seekGod’s face in order to discern what it is thathe is calling them to do in the future. For me,this meant being ordained in the Church ofEngland. This ministry continues today in the

local church and the dioceseof London. Many of you willuse this time to discern howthe Lord is calling you intospecific ministries. Maybe heis calling you into pastoral, missionary or charity work.Maybe he is calling youto start your own uniqueministry, to be a visionaryleader, crossing boundariesand advancing the work ofthe kingdom of God. Maybehe is calling you back intothe secular workplace as youwitness to the gospel in thepublic square. If these four themes resonatestrongly with you, then LSTmay well be a great place tostudy. Please be assured ofmy prayers as you discernwhere to study and whetherLST is the right place for you.The School’s motto is takenfrom Paul’s letter to theColossians, chapter 3, verse2: “Set your minds on thingsabove”. It reminds us thatour fundamental identity isin Christ. He is the centre ofour lives within the kingdomof God. He is the one whois seated at the right handof the Father in heaven. Ourlives, by means of the HolySpirit, are united with himand his mission in the world. My prayer is that LST willhelp you understand youridentity in Christ clearly andpowerfully, for the glory of hisname! We look forward to hearingfrom you. I wish you everyblessing as you discernGod’s direction.Theological educationrooted in worship and inChristian community.Dedicated to serving andequipping the Church.Committed tocontending for the faithin this generation. The Revd ProfessorMark J. CartledgePrincipal05

DecadesLST through theMidway through the nineteen-thirties a number of people began to discuss the needfor a Bible college in London where evangelical leaders could be ‘thoroughly groundedin the Word of God and the truths of the gospel.’They had a vision for aninter-denominational,evangelical college thatwould transform the risingtide of liberal scholarshipin Western universitiesand prepare Christians tointeract with the post-warworld. London School ofTheology was formed in themiddle of World War Two.06Based in central London, thecollege (originally known asLondon Bible College) initiallyoffered only correspondencecourses and evening classes.By 1944, over 300 studentswere enrolled, and two yearslater the number was up to1,400 and evening classeswere being taught all overthe UK. In Autumn 1946the first full-time studentsstarted their studies at19 Marylebone Road. Thesite had recently beenpurchased by Sir John Laingand was initially given to LBCrent-free for a period of threeto five years.

The college grew rapidlyand the premises werequickly outgrown. In 1956 work began ona new building. LBCoperated out of temporarybuildings for a number ofyears as the old buildingwas demolished to makeroom for the new. The newbuilding was dedicatedon 10 May 1958 and twothousand people werepacked into 19 MaryleboneRoad to celebrate thismomentous occasion withexcerpts of the servicebroadcast by the BBC.In the meantime,a new problememerged. During the‘wilderness years’, whenLBC had no buildings of itsown, student numbers hadgrown to the point wherethe new building wasoperating at full capacityas soon as it was opened.Further growth of thecollege continued andin 1970 LBC moved toNorthwood, to the campuspreviously occupied by theLondon College of Divinity. In 2004, London BibleCollege became LondonSchool of Theology (LST).This name change didnot represent a changeof focus, but rather, arenewed commitment toserve Christians from allaround the world for whomthe term Bible College didnot clearly convey ourcommitment to academicrigour alongside our corecommitment to Scripture.Today, LST has around500 students aswell as 185 Life-LongLearning students.LST is currently led bythe Principal, ReverendProfessor Mark Cartledge. He is accountable toa Board of Trusteesand supported by anExecutive Team: Mrs.Kate Douglas (AcademicSecretary and Directorof Academic Supportand Director of HumanResources), Mr. JonathanMead (Director of Financeand Administration)and Reverend ProfessorGraham Twelftree(Academic Dean).07

To ‘explain whatit says, what it meansand what it means forus’ is a template that Istill use for my preachingpreparations, along withthe prayer, ‘Lord, whatdo you want to say tothese people through thispassage?’”Rev.
