“Thank You” from the Lighthouse for a Job Well Done!Once again, the Lions and the Lighthousehave combined to make one of the fastestgrowing, most efficient and effective nonprofits in Georgia. Last year, we performed2042 vision screenings. This year, thatnumber jumped to 8423, largely due to theefforts of the Tallapoosa Lions, whoscreened 4500 children this year. TheEssilor Vision Foundation estimates that 2out of 3 school-age children do not receiveany preventative vision care before enteringelementary school. Poor vision is known toaffect learning performance, self esteem, academic achievement, dropout rates, andjuvenile delinquency. Through thescreening efforts of Lions Clubs across thestate, we are working hard to break thatcycle. More children were screened thisyear through the Lighthouse than everbefore, and those who were not eligible forPeachcare had the opportunity to apply forservices through the LighthouseFoundation. In addition to the vision screenings, Lionsalso provided support by volunteering atclinics throughout the state. With theLions’ help, the Lighthouse was able toadminister nearly 2000 eye exams and over3000 pairs of glasses!Another way in which the Lions help isthrough the donation of used eyeglasses, hearing aids, and cellphones. Dozens ofmissionary groups took tens of thousandsof glasses overseas this year. Every personMembers of the Lighthouse Board of Directors signed the closing documents on the newLighthouse building on Wednesday, July 28!! This is such an exciting time for theLighthouse and for the Lions of Georgia! If your club has not made a pledge to the CapitalCampaign, or has not made any payments toward pledges made, please make thosearrangements with District Director PDG Kenneth Moore. Pictured here are: Seated, LR -- Chairman Gary Vaughters, Immediate Past Chair PCC Mark Miller; Standing, L-R -Secretary Donna Townsend, Executive Director Christina Lesson, District D DirectorPDG Mike Higgins. A Message from 18A’s “Lion King”.Australia was great and I wish all of youcould have been there. It was awonderful trip and a fantasticconvention. It is winter there, but theirwinter is more like our fall – chillymornings and pleasant afternoons. Whennot at the DGE seminar or at conventionevents, we spent most of our timewalking around Darling Harbour.Restaurant after restaurant afterrestaurant, all offering basically the samething with a different flair and if you lefthungry it’s your own fault. All weDGEs, spouses and Bob Smith’s son,Robbie, explored together a good bit ofthe time. When we were in DGE class, itwas Robbie’s unenviable task to try tokeep up with the spouses. Been there, done that, and it’s not an easy job. Wedid manage to get in a dinner cruisearound the harbour one night and the daybefore we left we took a tour to the BlueMountains, Featherdale Wildlife Parkand Sydney’s Olympic complex. At thewildlife park we saw emus, ostriches, and Australia’s own Tasmanian Devil. We were able to pet kangaroos andkoalas, and saw some birds we just don’thave around here.We are blessed with anotherenthusiastic and dedicated internationalpresident this year in Sid Scruggs fromVass, NC. His theme is “A Beacon ofHope” and his focal point is SERVICE.He is asking every club in the world tostart a “signature” community serviceproject. He is convinced that growth incommunity service will result in growthin membership. I have to agree. He issuggesting four themed servicecampaigns throughout the year:August – Engaging our Youth.Invite LEOs and/or youth in your area toorganize & participate in a serviceproject. The Peace Poster contest is oneway to involve our youth.October – Sharing the Vision.Plan vision health projects and work withthe visually impaired. Vision screenings, volunteer at the Lighthouse, collecteyeglasses, etc.December/January – Relievingthe Hunger. Organize food drives andprojects to feed the hungry.April – Protecting our Planet.Come up with a project that improves &protects the environment. Highwaycleanup, plant trees, plan an “Earth Day”event to collect recyclables are somesuggestions. My theme for the district thisyear is simply, PRIDE. Proud,Responsive, Involved, Dedicated,Enthusiastic. I will expand on thosewhen I visit your club.In last month’s “PRIDE”, Ilisted the main district goals for the year.I will only re-emphasize the main onehere – RETENTION. Year-end resultsfor 18A were 206 new members addedand 225 members dropped for variousreasons, most of which were likelypreventable. PDG Kenneth Moore is ourRetention Chairman, so call and invitehim to your club even if you don’t thinkyou have a problem with retention. He isarmed with several ways to identifypotential losses before they walk out thedoor. We have to try to proactivelyprevent losing the members we havewhile asking new prospects to join us.July 17 was the state-wide ZoneChair training and Club Supportworkshop. PCC Mark Miller did hisusual outstanding job teaching &presenting along with ID HaynesTownsend and PDG Lil Shurtleff. Iknow the zone chairs came away with amuch better understanding of what theirposition involves and are excited andready to attack the year with enthusiasm.I look for big things from the zone chairsthis year but they cannot do it alone. It isup to every member in 18-A to do his/herpart to make this a successful year. Andremember, ALL Lions meetings, training, etc are open to ALL Lions regardless ofposition within the club or district.Official club visit invitationshave been a little slow so far, but then itis just the beginning of the year. Pleasecall or email Nanette or me to schedulemy visit to your club. The calendar ispretty wide open right now. Call nowand beat the rush for your preferreddates. The earlier the better. One other item – the newDistrict Governors Contest. Entries inthat, too, have been slow. I hope theypick up drastically now that the officialLions year has started. The moreparticipation we have, the better thecompetition. The stiffer the competition, the better the results. The top 3 winnersin small and large clubs will be awardedat the state convention, but the realwinners will be those we serve.DG Scott

There are only 13 tablesponsorships available and we expect they will be sold soon. At thattime we will have paid for the tables including the dealers. There isonly one sponsor per table. 1 8 A Cl ub s Ar e Har d at Wo r k !West Cobb LionsExtension UpdatesSubmitted by PDG Berry Broach18A Extension ChairDG Scott has asked me to serve asExtension Chair for the 2010-2011 Lionsyear. His goals for this year are for us toextend 2 new clubs, one in the NorthRegion and one in the South Region. Inaddition, he is requesting that twoCertified Guiding Lions serve each ofthese clubs. A Certified Guiding Lion isrequired to serve for a two-year term withthese clubs. I am also able to trainadditional Guiding Lions. The DG alsodesires one new Campus Club and onenew Leo Club in addition to the two newLions Clubs. These goals are easy toachieve and I will be pushing to surpass hisgoals.I have, over the past two years, beeninvolved is chartering three new clubs, andI have learned that the key in charteringnew clubs is work done before thecanvassing for new members actuallybegins. I am putting together anextension team that will aid me inselection of the areas to receive the newclubs. This team will study those areas todetermine just what type club we shouldbe chartering there. We will find a placefor the organizational meetings and wewill seek out the leaders in thecommunities to contact up front to obtaintheir blessings for our efforts. If we canfind the mayor, police and fire chiefs, council members, judges and leaders in thecommunities before we start, we will beway ahead of the game.PDG Kenneth Moore is the RetentionChair this year and he has agreed to serveon the Extension Team. Retention is keyto the success of any new club. With hisinput we will be starting early with a planfor retention. All clubs should be thinking about newLeo Clubs in your schools. CampusClubs require a college in your community,so if you have a college in your area, let’sthink about putting a Campus Club in thatschool. Please contact me with yourideas.West Cobb Lions Club stayed busy in July with two projects – one afundraising effort, the other a community service. For the sixth year, West Cobb took part in the Powder Springs Fourth ofJuly Celebration by having aSno-Kone booth.
