Thyme' For Biscuits2 1/4 c Red Band all purpose flour1 T sugar3 t baking powder3/8 t garlic salt1/2 t basil,crushed1 t thyme,crushed1/2 c butter1/3 c Parmesan cheese,Shredded4 T dried tomatoes,drained and-snipped1/4 c sour cream1/2 c milkPour 3/4 cup boiling water over 10 pieces of dried tomatoes. Let sitfor minutes to dehydrate.Stir together flour, sugar, baking powder, garlic salt, basil and thyme.Using a pastry blender, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarsecrumbs. Stir in cheese and tomatoes. Make a well in the center of thedry mixture. Add sour cream and milk all at once. Stir just untilmoistened.Turn dough out onto lightly floured board. Flour top and knead 2 or 3times. Lightly roll out ¾ inch thick. Cut with biscuit cutter.Place on ungreased baking dish. 1776 Coffee Cake1 c water,Warm2 T yeast,or 2 packages1/2 c sugar1/8 t mace1 c scalded milk1 c lard,Melted1 T salt3 eggs,beaten7 c flour,aboutbutter,softenedcinnamon & sugar,mixed-togetherblueberries & cherries-decorationsPOWDERED SUGAR ICING1 t vanilla1 lb powdered sugar5 T hot milk1/2 t lemon flavoring2 T white shortening (Crisco)Put the yeast in the water & set aside.Put sugar, mace, milk, melted lard, salt & eggs in a large mixing bowl.Add yeast mixture and about 7 cups of flour. Mix all ingredientstogether & work to a smooth dough. Let rise until double. Roll out onboard 1/2" inch thick, spread with butter, sprinkle with cinnamon &sugar. Cut in strips one inch wide. Twist them as you place in around 8" greased pan. Let rise about 40 minutes.Bake 18-20 minutes at 375 degrees or until golden brown. Ice withPowdered Sugar icing. Cream butter, sugar and egg. Stir in flour,vanilla and pecans. Mix well by hand. Shape into balls about the sizeof walnuts, place on cookie sheets and flatten to about 1/8 inch.2. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, or until brown. Remove from oven and allow tocool completely and harden. Winner Jean McGree of Flossmoor "boreseveryone," she says, with this family tale of Christmas praline cookies:"Since the time Mom had been a little girl, each November Grandmawould surround her back yard pecan tree with sheets to catch thefalling nuts. But most of the nuts had to be knocked from the brancheswith her long-handled broom. 1986 Winner: Almond Thumbprint CookiesCOOKIES 2 c all-purpose flour,Sifted1/2 c Sugar1/4 t Salt1 c Butter3/4 c unblanched almonds,Grated2 t VanillaFROSTING 6 T Butter1/3 c Half-and-half2/3 c brown sugar,Packed2 c Confectioners' sugar1/2 t Vanillapistachio nuts,ChoppedFor garnish1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. For cookies, sift flour, sugar and saltinto bowl. Cut in 1 cup butter with pastry blender until mixtureresembles coarse crumbs. Blend in almonds and vanilla. Work mixturewith fingers until a ball of dough is formed. Then shape into 1-inchballs.2. Place balls on greased cookie sheets; make a depression in center ofeach cookie. Bake about 8 minutes; remove from oven. Dent again andbake about 8 minutes longer; cool.3. For frosting, blend 6 tablespoons butter, half-and-half and brownsugar in saucepan. Boil 2 minutes, stirring constantly; remove fromheat. Cool about 15 minutes, then stir in confectioners' sugar andvanilla. Beat until smooth and thick.4. Fill depressions in cookies with butterscotch frosting and sprinklefrosting with nuts.

Beat butter, sugar, egg yolks, lemon rind, lemon juice, cherryliqueur and salt in large mixer bowl. Stir in the flour. Shape intoball; cover and refrigerate for 1 hour.2. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Roll dough 1/8-inch thick on lightlyfloured cloth-covered board. Cut into desired shapes. Place on greasedbaking sheet; sprinkle with sugar crystals. Bake 10 minutes (cookiesshould not brown). Cool on wire racks.3. Store in airtight container 2 days to develop flavor. 1986 Winner: Chocolate Covered Cherry Cookies1 1/2 C Flour1/2 C Unsweetened cocoa powder1/4 T Salt1/4 T Baking powder1/4 T Baking soda1/2 C Butter (or margarine,)Softened1 C Sugar1 Egg1 1/2 t Vanilla48 Maraschino cherriesFrosting6 oz Semisweet chocolate chips1/2 C Sweetened condensed milkCherry juice (4 to 5 tsp)1. In bowl, stir together flour, cocoa, salt, baking powder and bakingsoda. In another bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg andvanilla to butter-sugar mixture and beat well. Gradually add dryingredients to butter-sugar mixture and beat until well blended.2. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Place on ungreased cookie sheet andpush down center of each ball with thumb. Drain cherries and reservejuice. Place 1 cherry in center of each indentation. Heat oven to 350degrees.3. For frosting, put chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk insmall saucepan. Heat until chocolate melts. Stir in 4 teaspoons cherryjuice. If too thick, add more juice.4. Spoon 1 teaspoon frosting over each cherry. Spread to cover cherry.Bake 10 minutes or until done. Do not overcook. Remove to wire rack andcool. The cookies freeze nicely.

Place on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper.2. Fill center with melted chocolate. Chill until firm. Store inrefrigerator. Cut into desired shapes with a flour-dipped cookiecutter. Place on ungreased or lightly greased cookie sheet.3. 1988 2nd Place: Pat Egan's Christmas Tree CookiesYield: 72 Servings2 1/2 c Flour1 c Sugar1 c Butter (or margarine)Softened1 1/2 t Baking powder1/4 T Salt1/2 T Almond extract1 Egg1/4 c Green sugar crystals,about1/4 c Confetti (or nonpareil-candy)Decorations,optionalPreparation time: 20 minutes Chilling time: 4 hours Baking time: 10minutes1. Put flour, sugar, butter, baking powder, salt, almond extract andegg into large bowl of an electric mixer. Mix together, using lowspeed. Dough will be crumbly. Then knead dough with hands untilmixture holds together.2. Remove 1/3 cup of the dough; wrap and refrigerate. Divideremaining dough in thirds. Using hands, roll each into a 6-inch log.3. Put sugar crystals on a sheet of wax paper. Roll each log in thesugar crystals to coat well; use the wax paper as a guide to press incrystals. Shape each log into a triangle, pressing gently on wax paperto give three sharp corners. Make sure to make 2 sides longer than thethird sid e. Beat margarine, sugar and molasses in a large mixing bowl. Add eggand mix well.2. Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves,ginger and nutmeg. Add to butter mixture; mix well.3. Divide dough into 4 equal portions on a large piece of plastic wrap.Wrap and shape into a flat disk about 1 inch thick. Refrigerate untilfirm, about 8 hours, or freeze for 2 hours. (Dough can be refrigeratedup to 3 days.)4. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Working with 1 disk of the dough at a time,roll out on a well-floured board, dusting the rolling pin as you work.Dough will be very soft and can be difficult to work with so workquickly and use plenty of flour. Using cookie cutters dipped in flour,cut into desired shapes. Put cookies 1 inch apart on an ungreasedcookie sheet. Use currants or candy for eyes or buttons, if desired.5.
