What to See and Do2021 Old Wadena Rendezvous andChautauqua2021marks the 29th annual Old Wadena Rendezvousand Chautauqua, a celebration throughstorytelling, theater, music, dance, and art of the region’s pastand of its rich cultural heritage. The Festival is held on thegrounds of the beautiful Old Wadena County Historical Parkon the banks of the Crow Wing River near Staples.This year’s Festival will be Saturday and Sunday, August14 & 15. Gates open both days at 10 am and admission is 10for both days of the Festival with kids 12 and under admittedfree if accompanied by an adult. Family groups of any size areadmitted with one low 25 entrance fee for two days of funand entertainment.Have you ever wanted to really practice the traditionalarts that are demonstrated every year at the Festival? This yearanyone has that opportunity as the Rendezvous continues a“Chautauqua” on the Old Wadena Park grounds. Here is theplan for 2021.Wadena County has constructed a permanent pavilionat the Rendezvous campground and events such as barnquilt painting take place under the pavilion roof. This year anew replica ox cart will be on display on the park grounds.With financial support from the 5 Wings Arts Council, theMinnesota State Arts Board, and local businesses, the OldWadena Society will provide anyone who wishes to learn theopportunity to practice one of the arts showcased each yearat the Rendezvous. This year those showcased arts are thetraditional Ojibwe wooden flute and storytelling, songwritingand playing the ukulele are the featured arts. Flutes and ukesare provided for learners to use. Details on our webpages.As always there will be a fur traders village complete withblacksmith shop and of course the famous “Baby’s Fry Bread”tent with the world’s best fry bread featuring bannock, chickencordon bleu, or fruit fillings in the best fry bread ever. Guests canalso order plain fry bread or one with a dash of cinnamon sugar.Local naturalist Dick Oehlenschlager will provideinterpretive talks about the flora and fauna of the region aswell as guided tours along the park’s “bog walk” interpretivetrail. You can practice throwing a tomahawk or shooting a BBgun, or build a bluebird house. All of this is included in thelow admission price.Artisans will demonstrate a host of fascinatingcrafts, including pottery making, woodworking and woodcarving, lace making, dried flower arranging, leatherwork, blacksmithing, painting, and basket making. Specialperformance of hoop dancing by the Sampson brothers Miccoand his older brother Samsoche. Celebrating the ArtsWadena MemorialAuditoriumBuilt in 1934, the WadenaMemorial Auditorium is acultural and historic landmarkthat provides countless hours ofcommunity and regional enjoyment.The auditorium has been restoredin the beautiful art-deco style ofthe 1930s. As the community andschool’s center for the performingarts, it is one of Wadena’s mostappreciated assets.Wadena-Deer Creek HighSchool’s Drama Department’s Fallplay and One-Act play rehearseand perform at the Auditorium.Their performances have received“superior” ratings at the StateOne-Act Festival six times, as wellas 11 appearances at State. Thecommunity theater group, WadenaArea Madhatters, also perform in theauditorium. They offer everything from full-cast musicals and dramas to acting workshops,a summer youth acting camp, dinner theaters, One Act Play competitions, and ‘Mad Lab’productions. These lab shows offer plays that cover complex social as well as educationaland experimental theatre experiences. Madhatters has performed such noteworthy showsas “Guys and Dolls”, “Annie”, “The Sound of Music”, “The Wizard of Oz”, “On GoldenPond”, “Nunsense”, and “Prescription: Murder”. Our latest dinner theatre was “The KitchenWitches.” Mad Lab has produced shows such as “girl”, “Rabbit Hole”, “A Walk in theWoods”, “Whales of August”, and in conjunction with our neighboring theatre group, “TrueWest” and “Twelve Angry Men.”Wadena Area Concert AssociationSince the early 50s the Wadena Area Concert Associationhas been supplying fine entertainment opportunitiesfor Wadena and the surrounding communities. Each year aseries contains a variety of musical offerings, including bothvocal and instrumental soloists and small groups presentingprograms of jazz, popular and classical music.All concerts are held in the renovated MemorialAuditorium. Places of InterestWadena County Museum and Genealogy Research CenterBOOKSTORE & GIFT SHOP Open Year RoundThe Museum of the Wadena County Historical Society features15 exhibit rooms that showcase the history of Wadena Countybeginning with the stories of the fur traders and early settlers andcontinuing through to the present day. In addition to thousandsof unique artifacts, the Aldrich railroad depot has been recreatedin one of the rooms and the tower fromthe original 1886 courthouse stands on thegrounds.The Museum now includes a GiftShop and Bookstore that feature booksabout local and regional history. Wadenapostcards are available FREE. OtherWadena souvenirs are also available.The Wadena County HistoricalSociety is the primary resource forthe county’s history. In the GenealogyResearch Center there are more than25,000 obituaries, 4,000 photographs,400 binders on families of the county,plus information on rural school districts,churches, townships and more. A publicaccess computer is available for use bypatrons and a scanner provides access to microfilm of theWadena Newspapers.Programs throughout the year include a fascinating line-upof lectures and entertainment. Special events include an HistoricCarnival held during Wadena’s June Jubilee plus a LivingHistory Day held each year at the museum. “BookEnds”, amonthly program connecting writers and readers is held the 2ndSaturday of the month at 11:30 a.m. “Minnesota Voices”, a freenoontime program is held the third Thursday of the month atnoon. It features an eclectic line-up of writers, entertainers, andcharacters from history.
