YOKOHAMA’S PHILOSOPHY OFCUSTOMER SATISFACTIONYokohama proudly manufactures what are consideredto be among the finest tires in the world. However, as inany business, customers will occasionally return productsthey have purchased. Regardless of the reason, how thedealer responds to a customer’s problem determineswhether the customer will remain a customer. This is thereason Yokohama has established guidelines for the fairand positive handling of warranty claims and customerproblems. We believe our customers should receive thesame respect and enthusiasm when returning for warrantyservice as when they originally purchased our product.First, obtain as much information as possible from thecustomer. Allow them to tell you their entire story. Then, because the exact cause of the problem must be determined, thoroughly inspect the tire, including dismounting the tire,if necessary. The more thorough your inspection, the moreconfidence the customer will have in your level of expertise.Remember, this is an era of better educated consumers whoare frequently reminded by the news media, internet andconsumer organizations of consumers’ legal rights. If the problem is non-warrantable (road hazard, misalignment, lack of maintenance, etc.), explain the cause of the problem ina courteous and understanding manner. Customers treatedfairly and professionally will remain customers, regardless ofthe outcome. The most successful approach to providing warranty serviceis to establish a complaint handling system. Determinewho is responsible for handling customer complaints andwhere the work will take place. Post this information in yourshowroom for reference. One final thought: customer satisfaction does not stop withthe sale of the product. By offering customers fast, friendly, knowledgeable service, you can practically be assuredthe customer will return to you. As a result, both you andYokohama will continue to have satisfied customers. After identifying the problem, explain the reason to thecustomer in simple, direct terms. If your inspection revealsa problem covered under the Yokohama warranty, properlycomplete the appropriate Yokohama claim form and followestablished warranty claim procedures. Strict adherence tothese procedures will ensure timely processing of warrantycredits.1

GENERAL INFORMATIONABOUT WARRANTIESIn these consumer-oriented times, products are oftenpurchased based upon warranties covering those products.Yet warranties in general are confusing to most customersand misunderstood by many. The following explanationswill be helpful to you and your customers in understandingYokohama’s warranty policies. In the United States, product warranties are governed byboth federal and state regulations. In 1975, Congress passedand put into law the Magnusson-Moss Act that governswritten warranties for consumer products selling at retail for 15.00 or more. The Uniform Commercial Code, adoptedwholly or in part by most states, covers implied warrantiesthat are either oral or written. In addition, most states havelaws and regulations protecting consumer rights which varyfrom state to state. You should be familiar with those statutesthat cover your products and marketplace.WHAT IS A WARRANTY?Simply stated, a warranty is a promise made bya manufacturer and/or dealer to a customer covering aproduct. The two basic types are as follows:1. Implied WarrantyAn implied warranty is a promise about aproduct before or at the time of sale. This typeof warranty is a promise that the product isin good condition and ready for its intended, designed use (Warranty of Merchantabilityand Fitness).2. Express WarrantyAn express warranty is an explicit statement orpromise covering the product that may be oral orwritten. Further, the express warranty may be a (a)full or (b) limited warranty.a) A full warranty is a promise that a productwill be repaired or replaced at no cost to thecustomer within a specified period of time, and that the original cost will be refunded tothe owner if the product cannot be repaired orreplaced within the specified period. There areother stipulations that apply to this warrantynot noted here.b) A limited warranty has stricter criteria thanthe full warranty, hence the term “limitedwarranty.” The limitations particularly applyto specific requirements for payment ofreplacement costs, returning the product toa repair or service location, exclusions forgeographic coverage or non-transferability ofwarranty.Legal Obligations for DealershipsThe Magnusson-Moss Act governs written warranties andobligates the retailer to make written warranties for productscosting more than 15.00 available to customers prior topurchase. Additionally, a copy of the applicable warrantymust accompany the product at the time of purchase.Yokohama recommends that warranties be displayed withtheir products in the showroom. An alternative would beto prominently post a sign indicating that warranties areavailable to the customer upon request.Dealerships that are wholesaling or have associatedealerships should recognize the requirement to supplythese companies with warranty information so they will be inlegal compliance.Warranty information can be ordered by contactingYokohama Tire Corporation at:marketing.materials@yokohamatire.com, or by calling1-800-423-4544.Warranty For Tires Distributed By Yokohama TireCorporation Outside the USAYokohama Tire Corporation also distributes tires for sale inMexico and the Caribbean. Warranty claim procedures andpolicy are different for Mexico and the Caribbean from thosethat apply in the USA.
