THE GREAT GRIFFIN OF ST. CLAIRIn 1066, the St. Clairs of Normandy rode into England, bearing the banner of William the Conqueror. For their victorious service, they were given land in Scotland. In time, the St. Clairs of Normandybecame the Sinclairs of Scotland. For generations, the Chief of the Clan Sinclair, the Earl of Caithness, has proudly borne the Griffin rampant on his shield. In 1679, from Quebec, Count Frontenac dispatched Le Sier de La Salle to explore the west. From theprow of his ship gazed fiercely forward the emblem of Frontenac, the Griffin. When the Griffin firstburst into the lake above the Detroit River, La Salle’s passenger, Father Hennepin, named it Lake St.Clare, in honour of the feast day of Saint Clare, the day on which he first saw the lake. Today, the greatGriffin, with the strength of the eagle, is truly a worthy symbol of the psyche of St. Clair College.THE MACEThe Beadle (mace bearer) carries the mace in the procession immediately preceding the graduates ofthe College entering and leaving the ceremony. The Beadle is not common at Convocations and therole is purely ceremonial. It began in medieval times in England when an official was taking office oropening court and needed a bodyguard. The Mace, which is actually a weapon, was used to protect the dignitary. The St. Clair College Macewas donated by the Alumni Association in 1969. It was created by Birks Jewelers and made of sterlingsilver and ebony. The top has a lamp of learning seated on a book of knowledge. The four-sided basehas crests of Canada, Ontario, the City of Windsor and St. Clair College, and was hand-engraved.During Convocation, the Mace is carried by a senior non-academic administrator.THE LIRIPIPEAt Convocation, each graduate receives their diploma, degree or certificate and the St. Clair CollegeLiripipe shall be draped over the left shoulder to signify acceptance into the community of St. Clairgraduates. The Liripipe is a band of green velvet, edged with gold braid and trimmed with four tassels representingthe four major areas in the St. Clair Community – the counties of Essex and Kent, and the cities ofWindsor and Chatham. The Liripipe, a modification of the academic hood, originated in 15th century Europe, in the age of thegreat artists, scholars and explorers of the Renaissance. Today, it symbolizes recognition of anindividual who is now prepared to assume a responsible and creative role in the community.THE CRESTSt. Clair College of Applied Arts and Technology was given its own official crest at the inception ofcommunity colleges in Ontario in 1967. The green, white, and gold herald features a rose flanked bytwo cogwheels at the top, a griffin, and the motto “Optimum Elige”- Choose the Best. The Griffin isthe creature that supports the earldom of Caithness, held by the Chief of the Clan Sinclair. Historiansbelieve the Clan Sinclair stemmed from the French family, St. Clair. The rose in the herald refers toWindsor, The City of Roses, and the cogwheels represent the industrial nature of the area. This program is not an official graduation list.
