Welcome to Berkshire Community College’s 47th Annual AwardsCeremony. The students being honored this evening havepersevered and excelled. Thehonoree and scholarship recipients’ names will be inscribed on a plaquedisplayed at the college. A student is selected to receive a scholarship in thehonoree’s name.Adams Community Bank ScholarshipOriginally endowed by the former South Adams Savings Bank, this scholarship isawarded to a student with academic promise who lives in Northern Berkshire County.Alumni Board ScholarshipThe Alumni Board Scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated acommitment to pursuing either a degree or certificate at Berkshire Community Collegeand for whom a parent or grandparent has received a degree or certificate from thesame. Recipients of this award shall remain a BCC student in good standing and musthave satisfactory academic progress as defined by the scholarship committee. Thisscholarship has been funded through the vision and generosity of the Alumni AdvisoryBoard established in 2019.Austen Riggs AwardSince 1977, recognition has been given to a graduating student who has exhibitedacademic excellence in Behavioral Sciences. Sharon Ruth Young Beaulac Nursing AwardThe Sharon Ruth Young Beaulac Nursing Award is awarded annually to a non-traditional student, with financial need, who is pursuing a Nursing degree at BerkshireCommunity College. Sharon started her nursing career later in life and was a BerkshireCommunity College Graduate. She chose to work with geriatric patients rather than ina traditional hospital setting. Following her untimely passing, this award was fundedthrough the vision and generosity of her daughter, Lori Gazzillo and her husband(Romeo) Kenneth Beaulac.Berkshire Bank ScholarshipThis scholarship, generously endowed by Berkshire Bank and the former LegacyBank, is intended for graduates of Berkshire County high schools who havedemonstrated a commitment to pursuing degrees at BCC in business or arelated field.Berkshire Conservation District Environmental Science ScholarshipTo assist an environmental science student in pursuing a college education at BCCleading to a career in natural resources.Berkshire County Board of Realtors ScholarshipOne of the oldest scholarships offered at BCC, it is a tribute to the Board of Realtorsof Berkshire County to have made this enduring commitment of scholarship at thelocal community college level.Berkshire County School Counselors Association ScholarshipPresented at the Annual Spring Appreciation Dinner of the Berkshire CountySchool Counselors Association, this scholarship is awarded to a transferring student pursuing a career in human service, counseling, or educationand a graduate of a Berkshire County high school.Berkshire Environmental Action Team ScholarshipThe Berkshire Environmental Action Team Scholarship is given to a promising BCCstudent with financial need who is pursuing a degree or certificate in EnvironmentalStudies at Berkshire Community College. Berkshire Honors Scholar AwardThe Berkshire Honors Scholar Award was established to recognize an outstandingmember of the BCC Berkshire Honors Scholars Program. Eligible members participatein academically rigorous, cross-disciplinary honors colloquia and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher. This scholarship is funded by the BerkshireCommunity College Foundation.Marquita E. Richard Biros Memorial ScholarshipThe Richard Biros Memorial Scholarship at Berkshire Community College is awardedannually to a BCC, student seeking a degree in environmental, atmospheric, biologicalor computer sciences, or who is taking STEM related courses and has at minimum a3.0 GPA. Preference is given to students transferring from a north county high schoolincluding Berkshire Arts and Technology Charter School (BART), Drury High School,Charles McCann Vocational High School, Hoosac Valley High School and Mt. GreylockRegional High School. This scholarship has been funded through the vision and generosity of Linda Biros and the Biros family.Eduardo AlejandroDomingez AhuatlRobert M. Boland ScholarshipThe Robert M. Boland Scholarship is awarded to a promising student in the FineArts Program at Berkshire Community College. Recipients of this award will havecompleted at least one semester of full-time study, graduated from a BerkshireCounty high school and have demonstrated financial need. The recipient of this awardmust be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits for each semester covered by the scholarship. Established to honor BCC’s Professor Emeritus of Theatre Arts, Bob Boland,this fund is managed and funded yearly by Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation.Rachel OldsRuth P. & Nicholas Boraski ScholarshipThe Ruth P. and Dr. Nicholas Boraski Scholarship is awarded to promising studentswho have demonstrated a commitment to pursuing an associate’s degree atBerkshire Community College with plans to transfer to a bachelor’s degree program.Recipients of this award will be Berkshire County residents with a proven record ofacademic excellence and demonstrated financial need. This scholarship is one ofthe longest standing and most prestigious awards at Berkshire Community College.It was endowed by Nicholas Boraski and the late Ruth P. Boraski.James D. Border Memorial ScholarshipThe James D. Border Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who has shown acommitment to pursuing a degree in the Humanities or Social Sciences at BerkshireCommunity College. Recipients of this award will have achieved a cumulative gradepoint average of 3.0 or higher, and demonstrate the ability to think outside the box,caring for others in the community, and a vision of making a difference in the world.This scholarship was endowed by family and friends in memory of James DurningBorder, Professor Emeritus of History at BCC.John & Jane Bresnahan ScholarshipThe Bresnahan Family began their tradition of a BCC education in 1972. Gerard E. Burke Hillcrest Educational Centers ScholarshipThe Gerard E. Burke Hillcrest Educational Centers Scholarship is awarded to apromising student who has demonstrated a commitment to completing a degreeor certificate in Human Services, or related areas of study, at Berkshire CommunityCollege. The sponsors of this award have a significant interest in supportingemployees of Hillcrest Educational Centers and their family members. This scholarshipwas endowed by the directors and employees of Hillcrest Educational Centers in 2010to honor 25 years of outstanding leadership by its President/CEO, Gerard E. Burke.The Charles Bybee Scholarship for Excellence in SciencesThis fund has been established to assist a student enrolled at Berkshire CommunityCollege who intends to pursue a degree in the medical field, is majoring in a relatedcourse of study including biology, chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, genetics,pharmacology, public health, pre-medical, nursing or related programs and who hasachieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Recipients must intendto graduate and the transfer to a four year institution. This scholarship is funded byJean Bybee ’67, family and friends in honor of Charles Bybee, Professor Emeritus ofScience.Lawrence A. Caesar ScholarshipThe Lawrence A. Caesar Scholarship honors a promising student of African-Americanheritage who is committed to pursuing a degree or certificate at Berkshire CommunityCollege. Recipients of this award are residents of Berkshire County with financialneed, demonstrated academic excellence and dedication to their goals. The scholarship was originally funded by Lawrence A. Caesar upon his death in 1978 and thenendowed by dear friends in 2014. Mr. Caesar, a Dalton native, was one of BerkshireCounty’s leading civil-rights and social-action volunteers.Zoa Pratt Campetti ScholarshipThis scholarship has been generously endowed by the friends and family of Ms.Campetti and the High Meadow Foundation. Zoa was the sister, best friend andbusiness associate of the late Jane Fitzpatrick, former owner of Country Curtains.It is to assist an adult female student seeking to pursue a degree at BCC.Karen Canfield Border ScholarshipKaren, who retired in 2003, was a highly regarded faculty member. Wenying YiAntonio & Giovanna Caparello ScholarshipThe Antonio and Giovanna Caparello Scholarship is intended to assistpromising students who are dedicated to improving their lives through thepursuit of higher education. The recipient of this award will have demonstratedfinancial need. This scholarship is funded annually by Dominic Caparello ’67, inmemory and honor of his parents’ Italian immigrant experience, their commitment to “becoming educated,” and their ability to inspire their children toimprove their lives through education.Larry Carroll ScholarshipThe Larry Carroll Scholarship at Berkshire Community College is awarded annually toa BCC student who is seeking an Associates of Arts degree. Preference is given tostudents with a desire to pursue a career in the theater or film industry. Larry wasa 1971 graduate of BCC who studied with Bob Boland and went on to a successfulcareer in advertising and later film and television production. This scholarship hasbeen funded through the vision and generosity of Larry’s friends and family.Monica BlissRichard and Susan Cetti Scholarship for Excellence in STEMRichard and Susan Cetti Scholarships for Excellence in STEM are awarded to studentswho have demonstrated a commitment to pursuing either a degree or certificateat Berkshire Community College and are enrolled in a course of study focused onscience, technology, engineering or math (STEM); priority is given to students whohave not earned a prior degree. This scholarship is funded by the Cetti’s.James DolleAlex GreenFinley Jude RootThe Civitan Club ScholarshipThe Civitan Club Scholarship is intended to assist students who have shown acommitment to pursuing a degree or certificate at Berkshire Community College.The sponsors of this award have a significant interest in supporting non-traditionalstudents, or single parents, who have performed volunteer service, and have no priordegree. This scholarship has been funded through the generosity and vision of CivitanClub members.Amber MacNeilHelen E. Clatterbaugh Memorial ScholarshipHelen Clatterbaugh was a pioneer in her time, performing innovative laboratoryresearch and raising her family. Helen’s son Mark and his wife Kathi, have funded thisscholarship to assist female students pursuing a career in the sciences.Margaret WrobelThomas P. Clement & Wonsook Kim ScholarshipThomas Clement attended BCC in the 1970s, after growing up in Pittsfieldas a biracial adoptee from Korea. He partly attributes his later educationaland career success to the transformative experiences with BCC’s faculty.Thomas’ wife Wonsook received scholarships as an international studentin the United States, which validated her dreams of becoming an artist.Together they have funded these scholarship awards to encouragestudents with promise, out of gratitude for the emotional and financialsupport they received as college students. Crane Currency ScholarshipThe Crane Currency scholarship is awarded to a student who has demonstrated acommitment to pursuing a degree or certificate at Berkshire Community College ina STEM related field of study. First preference for recipients of this award will be forsingle or widowed mothers with dependent children. This scholarship has been fundedthrough the vision and generosity of the Crane Fund for Widows and Children.Thomas J. Curley, Sr. & Patricia Lynch Curley ScholarshipTo be awarded to a non-traditional BCC student who has demonstrated a commitment to pursuing a career in a health related field, this scholarship was generouslyendowed by Leslie Curley of Pittsfield and the late Thomas J. Curley.Frank Deane ScholarshipFrank Deane was known to say “I love mathematics, I love teaching it and theyeven pay me for it.” Atty. Michael A. Lehmann, a 1988 BCC graduate and aformer student of Professor Deane, has established this award for high achievingmath students.Eugene A. Dellea Hillcrest Hospital Foundation ScholarshipThe Eugene A. Dellea Hillcrest Hospital Foundation Scholarship is intended to assistpromising students with financial need who have shown a commitment to pursuing aNursing, Allied Health or Social Service degree or certificate at Berkshire CommunityCollege. This scholarship was endowed by John DiSantis and Quality Printing Companyto honor the memory of John’s parents, Nicholas and Theresa DiSantis, the foundersof Quality Printing Company in 1963.Doscher Family ScholarshipThe Doscher Family Scholarship is intended to assist promising students whohave demonstrated a commitment to pursuing a degree or certificate at BerkshireCommunity College. Recipients of this award will have shown great resolve in overcoming adversity, will be dedicated to their field of study, and will have contributed tothe campus community outside the classroom. This scholarship was originally fundedby the Doscher family in 2012 in memory of Elizabeth “Betty” Doscher, and endowedin 2014 in honor of Jeff Doscher’s 39 years of service as an administrator at BCC.Rachel OldsJulia KalinowskyHelen Downey Scholarship AwardThe Helen Downey Memorial Scholarship is intended to assist promising studentswho have completed their first year in the Associate Degree Nursing program atBerkshire Community College. The recipient of this award has a proven record ofacademic excellence, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, as wellas compassion, integrity and a strong commitment to the profession of nursing. Thisscholarship was endowed by family, friends and co-workers in memory and honor ofHelen Downey, a former Berkshire Community College Trustee.Kristin BurkeEric Engel Memorial Nursing ScholarshipThe Eric Engel Memorial Nursing Scholarship at Berkshire Community Collegeis awarded to a non-traditional nursing student with financial need. Eric, anon-traditional student himself, was a registered EMT, studying in the nursingprogram at Berkshire Community College and worked in the school’s digitalcommons. Eric left this world after a long struggle with substance use disorder butnot before achieving many of his personal and professional goals. This scholarshiphas been funded through the vision and generosity of Eric’s parents, John andDonna Engel, as well as the many family and friends who knew Eric and his love forthe medical field.Mikki LennonEpworth Mission Trustees ScholarshipThe Epworth Mission Trustees Scholarship is intended to assist new or returningstudents who have demonstrated a commitment to pursuing a degree or certificateat Berkshire Community College. Recipients of this award will be Berkshire Countyresidents and full-time students in a Nursing, Human Services, Ministry, Liberal Artsor Selective Studies program, with demonstrated financial need, and proven academicprogress.
