UColl: OLIU09 Psych 270 Positive Psychology and HappinessPositive psychology is the study of the positive elements ofhuman nature, behavior, and experiences, as well as thepractices that facilitate these positive elements. In the first partof this course, we review the history of positive psychology,examine the meaning and measurement of happiness andwell-being, explore the role of genetics and circumstances onhappiness, and review the myriad benefits of happiness. In thesecond part of the course, we review the research detailing whois happy and why, and we explore the research on the practicesand habits that facilitate happiness. Specific practice and habittopics include gratitude, mindfulness, optimism, strengthsidentification, meaning and purpose in life, meaningful socialconnections, compassion, forgiveness, positive relationships,sleep, and more. We willexplore the relations among psychological and physical healthand the welfare of children within a developmental perspective,considered within the contexts of families, health care systems,schools, peers, and community. Topics such as chronic illness(e.g., cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, organ transplant,asthma), adherence to medically prescribed regimens, andneuropsychological aspects of chronic illness will be addressed.Previous course work in Developmental Psychology (e.g., U09230, U09 322) would be helpful but not required.Credit 3 units.U09 Psych 311 History and Modern Systems of PsychologyAn introduction to the history of psychology. This course beginswith a brief consideration of forces leading to developmentof psychology in the mid-1800s. It then examines the birth ofmodern psychology in Germany, and the schools of psychologythat emerged early in the 20th century. Newer orientations andideas are considered in the final segment of the course. We alsoconsider the impact of psychology on American public life duringthe 20th century. The course discusses how delinquencybegins, persists, and is overcome. Delinquency will be lookedat from both a sociological and developmental-psychologicalperspective. We will discuss the criminal justice response todelinquency and evaluate programs and models that have metwith varying degrees of success, as well as those that have hadthe opposite effect on reducing delinquent behavior.Credit 3 units. Other topics include the measurement andextent of crime; the role of age, race, gender, and social classin the causation of and reaction to crime; the criminal justiceresponse to crime; and recent trends in policing, corrections, andcommunity-based interventions.Credit 3 units. UColl: OLHU09 Psych 371 Investigative PsychologyThis course will expose students to a variety of methods andtechniques for identifying and apprehending an unknown criminalsuspect. Investigative techniques including effective informationcollection, detecting deception, and the development of decisionsupport systems will be discussed. Empirically tested modelssuch as multidimensional scaling and social network analysis willbe covered, with attention given to the psychological processesunderlying these decision support tools.Credit 3 units. UColl: OLIU09 Psych 377 Introduction to Forensic PsychologyForensic psychology is the application of scientific psychologicalknowledge to matters that come before the judge or jury. Thiscourse will focus on criminal cases such as homicide and sexoffender commitment and on personal injury cases. Topics willinclude consultation with attorneys, psychological tests used andrecommended by forensic psychologists, and sex offender riskassessment. Other topics will include keys to being a dangerousexpert on the witness stand. Numerous actual case studies willbe presented.Credit 3 units. UColl: OLIU09 Psych 373 Psychology in the CourtroomThis course studies ways in which principles of psychology areused in the courtroom, looking at how the principles influenceand are used by lawyers, judges, witnesses, defendants, andjurors. We will consider issues of persuasion and prejudice ininfluencing jurors' decisions, and the role and tactics of expertwitnesses and jury consultants, including the ethical guidelinesunder which they operate. Finally, the course will discuss thedanger of violent behavior inside the courtroom, and how thisbehavior can be anticipated and prepared for through thedevelopment of security profiles.Credit 3 units. UColl: OLIU09 Psych 378 Crisis Intervention: The Criminal JusticeResponse to Chaos, Mayhem, and DisorderThis course explores the nature and psychology of the majortypes of crises criminal justice professionals confront on a dailybasis, including domestic violence, terrorism, riots and postdisaster panic, cults, threatened suicide, and active shooters,among others. Students will explore these topics against thebackdrop of actual case examples like hurricane Katrina, theattacks of 9/11, the shooting at Columbine High School, and theBranch Davidian standoff at Waco. Major theories and typologyschemes that attempt to account for these behaviors will beexplored, as well as the emotional impact of crisis responseon police, correctional officers, and other first responders. Thecourse may be used as an elective in the University CollegePsychology major, but it will not apply to the distribution areas inthe major.Credit 3 units. UColl: OLIU09 Psych 374 Psychology of PolicingThis course will expose students to the discipline of policepsychology, which is broadly defined as the application ofpsychological principles and methods to law enforcement.Subjects addressed will include the screening and hiring ofpolice officers; conducting screening for special squads (e.g.,SWAT); fitness-for-duty evaluations; training and consultation;and stress counseling, among others. The course examinesthe evolution of police psychology and early influences onthe profession such as the experimental investigation ofpsychological testing on police attitude and performance.Influential figures in the field of police psychology are discussed,including the work of Dr. Martin Reiser of the Los Angeles PoliceDepartment, the nation's first full-time police psychologist. UColl: OLIU09 Psych 379 Correctional PsychologyThis course will introduce students to the correctionalenvironment, and the many psychological considerationsinvolved in the detention, rehabilitation, and reintegration ofprison inmates. We will focus heavily on the psychologicalimpact of incarceration, as well the various treatment issuesrelated to inmate rehabilitation. Topics include the dynamics ofpower and oppression, gang affiliation, inmate managementand control, and the problems of sexual assault and suicideamong the inmate population. We also will discuss various legaldecisions affecting the correctional environment, especially inrelation to mental health treatment. Recommended: AbnormalPsychology.Credit 3 units. UColl: OLIU09 Psych 376 Introduction to CriminologyA general introduction to the study of crime from aninterdisciplinary perspective. Classical and contemporarysociological theories to explain and predict criminal behaviorwill be studied, as well as psychological theories from thepsychoanalytic, behavioral, and cognitive traditions that attemptto account for criminality and the psychosocial development of acriminal personality type. The marketing concepts of segmentation,product positioning, brand image, and brand loyalty areexamined, as well as ethical considerations pertaining to productquality and safety, and to the advertising message.
