Dear Friends,Appreciation is extended to all supporters of the Inaugural Southern Area HBCU CapitalCampaign. Support of the HBCU Capital Campaign will enable not only academic support of25 scholars over the 2021-2022 Academic Year but will also provide pathways for servantleadership development and authentic experiences in transformational community service. Thetwenty-five scholars will participate in a year-long academy focusing on servant leadershipwhile continuing studies at one of the area’s historically black colleges and universities.The mission of the Servant Leader Scholarship and Academy is to offset tuition and fees ofscholars during the 2021-2022 Academic Year and to foster a sustained philosophy of lifelongservice. The year-long curriculum will provide service-learning through five modules:Leadership Development; The Concept of Community Service; Best Principles forTransformational Service; Leveraging Partnerships and Relationships in Community Service;and Visioning Future Community Service Models. OVERVIEW OF THE SERVANT LEADERScholarship and AcademyThe Links, Incorporated has a solid legacy of supporting Historically Black College and Universities(HBCUs). The legacy has included, but is not limited to academic scholarships, endowments,collaborations on designated program initiatives, college tours/fairs, and mentoring initiatives. Thelegacy is built upon the objective to support the visibility, sustainability, and viability of HBCUs and thesuccess of students matriculating at these distinguished institutions that have been a significantcomponent of America’s higher education landscape for over a century.As one of four geographic areas for The Links, Incorporated, the Southern Area is committed tomaintaining the solid legacy of support for HBCUs and has created the Servant Leader Scholarshipand Academy to foster a sustained philosophy of life-long service. Scholars identified from a competitiveprocess of students matriculating at any one of the 60 HBCUs located in the geographical boundariesof the Southern Area, not only receive an academic scholarship, but are also engaged in a servicelearning cohort that is delivered through seminars, guided learning, reflection, skill development, anddirect community service engagement in partnership with designated chapters across the SouthernArea. (The Southern Area includes the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi,North Carolina, and South Carolina as well as the Commonwealth of The Bahamas).Each service-learning cohort examines the concept of community service through five modules and willimplements a framework of best practices for transformational community service in collaboration withpartnering chapters of The Links, Incorporated in the Southern Area. Titles of the five modules are: Leadership Development The Concept of Community Service: The What, Why, How, and Meaning Best Principles for Transformational Service Leveraging Partnerships and Relationships in Community Service Visioning Future Community Service ModelsIn alignment with the four-prong objective to support visibility, sustainability, fundraising, and studentsuccess for HBCUs, the Servant Leader Scholarship and Academy is framed upon the following desiredoutcomes: students’ development of self, talent, purpose, and community. The initiative offersopportunities to promote a culture of transformational service and community stewardship.The Servant Leader Scholarship and Academy is an investment in resources (fiscal, human, material,and spatial) with the hope of a return on the promise leadership and community service to enrich,sustain, and ensure a positive quality of life.7
