KIDS Safety NetChart Your Own Course for HealingWhen grief left her adrift, Jennifer Ewing foundsolace in spirit boats.By: Brittany ShootReprinted with permission from Spirituality & HealthJennifer Ewing didn’t set out to become a shipbuilder. After the 2004 death of her father, the San Franciscopainter and sculptor began meeting with a curandera, orNative American healer, to work through her grief. At thetime, Ewing had been painting Italian hill towns, workingat capturing the geometry and a sense of place. But shecouldn’t shake the boat imagery that appeared to her inher counseling sessions—and the following year, thedevastating images of New Orleanians escaping thefloodwaters of Hurricane Katrina in lifeboats.Deeply mourning her own loss and the national tragedy, inspiration struck. Over the next few years, Ewingbecame preoccupied with boats as powerful metaphorsfor drifting, navigation, and survival. She began cuttingup plastic water bottles to create hulls, decorating thetiny vessels, and eventually exhibiting her newlyconstructed totems. In January 2011, she was the artistin residence at San Francisco’s de Young Museum, where she held drop-in workshops for museum-goers tocreate their own works, “Spirit Boat Directions: Totemsfor Personal Journeys.”Ewing wasn’t surprised that her work elicited strongreactions from visitors. “[What I was doing] becameabout people, and the universe, and where people couldgo to in my work,” she says. In addition to the spiritualsculptures, which span the spectrum in terms of sizeand shape, she shifted her painting focus to ships andthe sea.Based on the positive responses to her workshops atthe de Young, she began teaching boat making atchildren’s art parties, adult grief groups, and evencorporate teambuilding events. “This is a culmination ofmany years,” she says of helping others find peace andhealing through art. “It’s been an experiment of sorts, encouraging people to feel their way through grief. Butit’s worked."To help build [the Spirituality & Health] Pinterest SpiritBoat board, send a jpg of your own spirit boat to[Spirituality & Health] art director, Sandra Salamony, atsandra@spiritualityhealth.com.Check out the progress here.Materials:Plastic bottle.Sharp knife.Lightweight materials for decoration.Glue.Instructions (choose all that apply): Cut off the top and one side panelof the bottle. Decorate your boat with thematerials you have gathered. Write your words on the boat or ona piece of paper to put in the boat. Give your boat a name. Say a poem/prayer inremembrance of your loved one. Display your boat. Hide it until youare ready to show someone. Float your boat in the sink orbathtub.
