The Paw PrideMay 2019THE PAW PRIDEISSUE 48 May 2019Multi-Cultural Day at BHMulticultural Day, a Beverly Hills tradition, was celebrated on May 3. Theday began in the cafeteria with country displays and delicious foodsfrom around the world, as well as cultural artifacts and colorful dress.The students enjoyed trying new foods and viewing the informativedisplays. The festivities continued in the afternoon with a variety ofperformances that represented our diverse student body. There wasdancing, singing, our 6th grade BH band members, our BH choir, alongwith an amazing martial arts display. The countries represented wereIndia, Trinidad & Tobago, Africa, Korea, and Jamaica, just to name a few.It was a wonderful day as students realized first hand that “diversity isthe one true thing we all have in common”.Let’s celebrate it everyday!ISSUE 481

The Paw PrideMay 2019Mother Language Day Poster ContestThe students at Beverly Hills Middle School participated for the fourth consecutive year in theInternational Mother Language Day Poster Contest presented by Upper Darby Township, UpperDarby School District and Upper Darby Multicultural Commission. International MotherLanguage Day is a worldwide annual observance held on February 21st to promote awareness oflinguistic and cultural diversity and promote multilingualism. The contest was open to all BeverlyHills Middle School, Drexel Hill Middle School, and Upper Darby High School students with awinner selected from each school. The poster contest kicked off on Wednesday, November 14,2018 and concluded on December 14, 2018. BHMS had a record-breaking number of studentsthat participated with over 35 from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. The poster entries needed torepresent the theme, “From many countries, regions, and places, we are one community.” Theposters were judged on their creativity, originality, and significance. The winners were selectedby the Multicultural Commission. 6th grader, Savannah Denig was our winner with 8th grader,Eva Fariha, winning honorable mention. All the participants received a certificate of recognition.The winners along with their families were invited to attend a reception at Upper Darby HighSchool before being presented their prize at the February Board Meeting. We look forward tonext year with even more participants and their amazing posters!ISSUE 482

The Paw PrideMay 2019Beverly Hills goes to Penn RelaysOn April 1st, the boys 4x100 relay of Andre Henneghan, KamaldeenAdegbite, Amir Hill-Hoskins, and Montez Ellis competed against 50 otherteams to qualify in the top 9 for the Penn Relays. The boys qualified 3rdwith a time of 48.83.The Penn Relays were held on Friday, April 26 at Franklin Field at theUniversity of Pennsylvania. The boys competed in the PIAA MiddleSchool Boys 4x100 event. Andre, Kamal, Amir and Montez won a silvermedal, dropping over a second, with a time of 47.76. It was a very closerace.ISSUE 483

The Paw PrideMay 2019Staff Members of the MonthPat Wertman RN, MS is a Health and PE teacher and department head at BHMS. She hasworked in the district for 24 years. She teaches 6th grade PE and 7th and 8th gradeStress Management. She also taught High school Science, Health and PE and Businessfor 13 years in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.Pat has a Masters of Science from St. Joseph’s University, Bachelors of Science fromWest Chester University in Health and Physical ED and a Nursing Degree. She furtheredher education with a Masters plus 60 credits in Continuing education in the followingareas-Health Education, Technology, and teaching methodology.Pat taught at The University of the Arts, Philadelphia, Pa and Delaware CountyIntermediate for over 10 years and has continued to work as a Geriatric nurse for past28 years at Waverly Heights in Gladwyne.Pat enjoys outdoor activities such as swimming and walking. She spends a lot of time atthe beach but also enjoys theatre and attends film festivals. New hobby- started makingJewry.Pat loves teaching and enjoys the BH staff. She ran the computer club after school and isthe nurse for the football and wrestling teams.Pat WertmanMotto: Have fun and know when to restructure your life.Nick Casertano is a Health and Physical Education teacher atBHMS. He has worked for the district since 2007. Not only is hea teacher here in the UDSD, he was also a graduate from UDHSclass of 2001. After high school, he attended West ChesterUniversity and received a Bachelors of Science degree inKinesiology with a k-12 teacher certification in Health andPhysical Education. He received a Masters of Education degreefrom Cabrini College (now Cabrini University) in 2011. He likesto spend his free time working out, going to the beach ormountains, and spending time with family and friends.
