Depending on the downstream application, size reduction is, as the term implies, reducing the overall size of a variable feedstock to produce a more uniform size-specific product, say converting roundwood or billets intomicro-chips. Or it can be an issue of increasing the surface area for a better reaction, say in a biogas plant, or convertingwood pellets to a powder for combustion. eaking forMälarenergi's unit 7 CHPWork has begun on building Mälarenergi AB's Block 7, anew waste wood-fired 150 MW combined heat and power(CHP) plant that will replace the last remaining fossil fuelfired parts of its energy complex in Västerås, Sweden. OnOctober 4, a ground-breaking ceremony was held by theSwedish municipal energy utility to mark constructionstart of its new Block 7 CHP at its energy complex inVästerås. Led by Niklas Gunnar, Business Area Manager forHeat at Mälarenergi, participants included local politicians,the company’s board of directors along with staff, clientsand suppliers.– this means that we will fulfil our most ambitious goal ever.Block 6 was an important step in our journey towards the future of society,and with Block 7 we are now moving all the way to being free from fuelslike coal and oil, said Staffan Jansson, Chairman of the Board.The new Block 7 plant represents an investment of SEK 1.7 billion ( EUR 179 million) and is expected to be operational in three years. WithBlock 7, the oldest 50-year parts of the complex will be phased out, deliveries of affordable district heating will be secured and the energy production will be free from coal and oil.– District heating is the absolute best form of heating and Västerås isone of the best examples in the world. 98 percent of the urban area isconnected to the network. Finland-headed material handlingsystem and equipment supplier for the energy and environmental sector,BMH Technology Oy, was also selected by Mälarenergi AB, for theSchematic of the Block 7 CHP (bottom) with fuel handling system with theexisting Block 6 (top) waste-fired CHP.
