APage TwoTHENEWSDECEMBER, 1960ST. MICHAEL'S HOSPITAL GRADUATION EXERCISESConvocation Hall, May 30, 1960Address byREV. JOHN M. KELLY, C.S.B., President, St. Michael's CollegeSome three years ago I first met this group ofyoung ladies when they began their course at St.Michael’s Hospital School of Nursing. It is a greatpleasure and honour to salute them today, on theoccasion of their graduation. They probably have mixed feelings today. Theyare glad to have finished, as everyone is happy tohave completed successfully a job they set out todo. They probably have some nostalgic feelings also, for, in spite of the rigours of apprenticeship. I’msure they have been happy years. In any case theyare well aware today at they haven’t really finishedanything. They have only reached the end of thebeginning of their lives of nursing. They are beginning life in an ancient andhonourable profession and I can say of them whatcan be said of the medical profession in general, viz. that society expects more of them than it doesof the average run of citizen. Their training hasprepared them to meet this higher standard. Thereare two things that the School of Nursing is pre pared to say of them today.(a) They know something — and because theydo they are worthy of the public’s confidence andtrust.(b) They are something. They have been sub mitted to a moral and personal discipline, designedto eliminate self-centeredness from their lives; andon this score they are presented to you today asyoung people dedicated to a career of service tomankind. And it is here that we are face to face withwhat constitutes the greatest dignity and nobility ofthe nurse, her consecration and devotion to othermen.Nurses don’t deal just with bodies, or parts ofbodies. They deal with people, human persons. They don’t minister to just physical needs but hu man needs and personal needs. And since theydeal with persons, they deal with the highest, mostnoble and most important beings in the entire uni verse. They deal with life, but it is not just organiclife or vegetable life; it is human life. While it istrue that their proper concern is one aspect ofhuman life, it remains always human life. Theydon’t deal with bodies. They deal with men. Andanyone who knows very much about men knowsthat they are very complex unities which resist divi sions under penalty of death or madness. Men aremen and not bodies or souls or spirits. Each aspectof man affects the whole man, each part has reper cussions in the whole. It is these whole personswhom nurses serve and not, as some suppose, artificially and unrealistically truncated and sepa rated parts. They deal with life in one of its dimensions butthey are brought face to face with the other dimen sions of life, for here the dimensions are insepar able from each other. And just because she is dealing with human life, the nurse is afforded an opportunity of understand ing it better. She has an opportunity to escape oneof the great banes of existence, the temptation toshallowness and superficiality. She, more than most, should become acquainted with the worthwhilenessof human life. Indeed her whole life is a declara tion of the worthwhileness of man and life and it isprecisely because of this reason that a nurse shouldbe a living reassurance to other people, a cause ofjoy, and a guarantee of dignity.A nurse will see men at their best but also attheir worst, for sickness brings out what is in a man.She can be an aid to greatness, frequently she mightbe the means of escape from smallness, resentmentand despair.Today, as you graduate from your novitiate andtake your place as a full-fledged member of yourprofession, I should like to assure you of the nobilityof your profession. It will have its humdrum aspect;it will have its routine; it will have its sorrows; itwill have its rewards and joys. It is a life and allthese things characterize life. But at the centre ofthem all you will, if you keep your eyes and heartsopen, find greatness and mystery, and your livesshould never be dull. There are just two counsels which I should liketo leave with you:(a) Always try to maintain a standard of excel lence. A false interpretation of the meaning ofdemocracy has made deep inroads into our society. It amounts to saying that the least common denom inator is good enough. The traditional and indeedthe only acceptable meaning of democracy is thatthe best should be available to all. Never be satis fied with just getting by. Eschew the mediocre per formance. Be convinced that, if what you do isworthwhile doing, it is worthwhile doing well. Avoidthe shoddy performance. This is the only way of

DECEMBER, 1960THEescape from boredom and even vulgarity, (b) Havea sense of humour. We are really not human unlesswe possess this faculty. Man is the only risible ani mal, which means that of all the things on earth,we alone can laugh.(i) Learn to laugh at yourself. This is anotherway of saying don’t take yourselves too seriously.I said earlier that nurses should be unselfish. Thisreally means that they should be able to transcendtheir own littleness and, from this higher point ofvantage, be amused at their own vanities.(ii) If you have a sense of humour you won’tNEWSPage Threemistake the unimportant for the important or viceversa.Humour has been defined as the recognition ofthe juxtaposition of the incongrous — (unimportantpeople in important jobs, making mountains out ofmolehills, headaches taken as mortal catastrophes)— You will have to have this to maintain yoursanity. The humanistic ideal is to have a soundmind in a sound body. Presumably as nurses youwill do the best you can to have this latter and ifyou keep your sense of humour, you will have theformer.THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 36.37.38.39.Sister Mary Ian .Toronto, OntarioSister Mary John .Toronto, OntarioMary Elston .Toronto, OntarioMary D'Andrea .Welland, OntarioFrances Moore .Barrie, OntarioMary Louise Boland .Toronto, OntarioSandra Ford .Montreal, QuebecPatricia Tierney .Toronto, OntarioHanorah Murphy .Mount Forest,OntarioMary Bradley .Sudbury, OntarioLascilla D'Arcey .Markdale, OntarioJoan Dewan .Toronto, OntarioAnne Piette .Penetanguishene,OntarioMary Frances LaPlante .
