Thus Homer was calledthe “schoolteacher of the Greeks.” Who have been theschoolteachers of America, and more generally, of thecitizens of the West? This seminar will examine the greatconversation in Western literature, beginning in ancientGreece and Rome and continuing through RenaissanceEurope, Elizabethan England, and the United States.20th Century AmericaThe Civil WarJUNE 5–11, 2022JULY 10–16 , 2022HILLSDALE CAMPUSHILLSDALE CAMPUSOver the course of the 20th century, the federalgovernment grew dramatically, as did divisions inAmerican political and social life. Abroad, Americaemerged as the world’s greatest power, fightingand winning two World Wars and a Cold War. Thisseminar will consider the major political and historicaldevelopments and events of the previous century,including the rise of progressivism, liberalism, and theadministrative state and the revolutions of the 1960s.The principal cause of the Civil War, fought from 1861to 1865, was the crisis over slavery, which had its rootsin the American Founding. This seminar will considerthe Founders on slavery, the “positive good” school,the rise of sectionalism, the secession controversy, thestatesmanship of Abraham Lincoln, the Constitutionin wartime, and Reconstruction.
