Section 1GENERAL INFORMATION“VERITAS ET UTILITAS”

HOWARD UNIVERSITY: AN OVERVIEWIn November 1866, shortly after the end of the Civil War, members of the FirstCongregational Society of Washington considered establishing a theological seminaryfor the education of African-American clergymen. Within a few weeks, the conceptexpanded to include a provision for establishing a University. Within two years, theUniversity consisted of the colleges of Liberal Arts and Medicine. The new institutionwas named for General Oliver O. Howard, a Civil War hero who was both a founder of theUniversity and, at the same time, commissioner of the Freedman’s Bureau.The University charter as enacted by Congress and subsequently approved by PresidentAndrew Johnson on March 2, 1867, designated Howard University as “a University forthe education of youth in the liberal arts and sciences.” The Freedmen’s Bureauprovided most of the early financial support of the University. In 1879, Congressapproved a special appropriation for the University. The charter was amended in 1928to authorize an annual federal appropriation for construction, development,improvement and maintenance of the University.Howard University as one of the nation’s leading research universities is dedicated toeducating students from diverse backgrounds at the undergraduate, graduate, andprofessional level, with a particular focus on African-American students, as well asthose of all other racial and ethnic groups from the United States and around the world.The University received its first accreditation from the Middle States Association ofColleges and Schools in 1921 and has had its accreditation reaffirmed by theAssociation at every required interval thereafter.“VERITAS ET UTILITAS”

Since its founding, Howard has been opento men and women from all racial and ethnic groups. The University has awarded morethan 100,000 degrees in the arts, sciences and humanities. Howard ranks among thehighest producers of the nation’s Black professionals in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy,engineering, nursing, architecture, religion, law, music, social work and education. TheUniversity has long held a commitment to the education and advancement ofdisadvantaged persons in American society and throughout the world. The goal is theelimination of inequities related to race, color, social, economic and politicalcircumstances.The University’s academic programs are offered by 13 schools and colleges: the Collegeof Arts and Sciences; the School of Business; the School of Communications; theCollege of Dentistry; the School of Divinity; the School of Education; the College ofEngineering and Architecture; the School of Law; the College of Medicine, the College ofNursing and Allied Health Sciences; the College of Pharmacy; and the School of SocialWork.The University library system, typifying Howard’s commitment to research, containsmore than two million volumes and is a member of the Association of ResearchLibraries. HOWARD UNIVERSITY: AN OVERVIEWContinuedThe University has an array of media outlets that address the educational, social,economic, and informational needs of the academic and wider communities. Its radiostation, WHUR-FM, and television station, WHUT-TV, a PBS affiliate, serve theWashington metropolitan area and beyond. Each provides training laboratories thatassist in preparing students for professional broadcasting and other careers.In addition to its collegiate programs, the University maintains an Early LearningProgram and a Middle School of Science and Mathematics. The Early Learning Programoffers pre-kindergarten through kindergarten programs and is accredited by theNational Association for the Education of Young Children. The Middle School ofScience and Mathematics is a District of Columbia Public Charter School providingcurricula for grades 5 through 9.The University’s main campus is located in Washington, DC, within five miles of theUnited States Capitol and consists of more than 57 buildings on more than 89 acres ofland. It also maintains a 22-acre West Campus in upper Northwest Washington, whichhouses the Law School. Howard university Policy on EqualOpportunity, ContinuedETHNIC ORIGIN DATA FOR COMPLIANCE REPORTINGTitle Vl of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, requires that no person in the United States shall, on theground of race, color or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefitsof, or be otherwise subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federalfinancial assistance from the U.S. Department of Education.To determine whether an institution adheres to the above, the Office of Civil Rights Planning inthe U.S. Department of Education requires that:“Each recipient shall keep such records and submit to the responsible Department official or hisdesignee timely, complete and accurate compliance reports at such times, and in such form andcontaining such information, as the responsible Department official or his designee maydetermine to be necessary to enable him to ascertain whether the recipient has complied or iscomplying with this part. General Admissions RequirementsThe University promotes academic excellence through a highly selective admission process.Students who are admitted show strong personal motivation along with backgrounds of consistentacademic growth and achievement. The University encourages the submission of applications fromsocially and economically disadvantaged students who show promise of gaining from a HowardUniversity education. To protect its character and standards of scholarship, the University reservesthe right, and the applicant concedes to the University the right, to deny admission to any student atany time for any reason the University deems sufficient.On September 24, 1983, the Board of Trustees of Howard University adopted the following policystatement regarding applicants for admission:"Applicants seeking admission to Howard University are required to submit accurate and completecredentials and accurate and complete information requested by the University. Applicants who failto do so shall be denied admission. Enrolled students, who as applicants failed to submit accurateand complete credentials or accurate and complete information on their application for admissionshall be subject to dismissal when the same is made known regardless of classification."Application OptionsAll students must use the Common Application to apply for admissions to the university. If a studentneeds assistance or accommodations, then the Office of the Registrar will provide a paper copy forthat student. Howard University requires all admitted students to present proof of high school graduation before enrolling at HU.Admitted students must provide the Office of Undergraduate Admissions with such proof of graduation by August 1of the year they plan to enroll.International Students: An extension will be granted to students outside the United States whose secondaryschools operate on a different schedule. You will not be penalized for the late receipt of your graduation certificateor final report from your high school. Students who are submitting final exam results as proof of graduation shouldensure that these results are sent to us as soon as they have been released, and provide official certificates as soonas these are available. Please note that if documents are not in English, an English translation should be provided,one which is issued either by a school official or by a translation agency accredited in the educational institution'scountry.In all cases, proof of graduation must be provided prior to beginning the first semester of classes at Howard.Howard considers the following documents to serve as proof of secondary school graduation:A high school transcript submitted directly from the student’s school. We will not accept a high schooltranscript submitted by the student. The high school transcript must show the date of graduation. Forstudents in a curriculum where national examinations or other certification signifies completion of highschool those documents will be required as proof of graduation.Results from the General Education Development (GED) Test. Students may submit GED results in lieu of afinal high school transcript. Students can take the GED Test almost anywhere in the United States andCanada and internationally at any of the 3,400 Official GED Testing Centers. International Transfer Students: Academic Eligibility. The minimum standards for admissionconsideration as a transfer student are:A passing grade of C or better in both a college-level English and college-level math courseA minimum of 15 credits (30 credits for the School of Business) from an accredited postsecondary institution2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) (3.0 GPA for the School of Business)The following documents are required for admission consideration:1.)
