IMPACT REPORT2019–2020Pivoting for the Healthof our Community

Changing course to addressunexpected needsJim Bauer, Salem Health Foundations chief development officerTHE SALEM HEALTH FOUNDATION makes a difference! Let’scelebrate our work that brings focused support and action. Weare helping others, changing lives, and improving our communities.Congratulations on the helpful differences you made. The work we do together is a tonic that soothes the overwhelmingpower of illness in people with few resources and severe conditions. The work we do together may not appear dramatic, but we areeffectively delivering hope to people who need extra support or care. This year has been unprecedented because of the COVID-19 pandemic.Families will tell heart-wrenching stories for generations about theirrestricted ability to comfort loved ones during the COVID-19 crisis. These stories make our hearts ache and represent how personalsacrifice actually becomes a collective behavior that helps everyone. The board is very excitedto welcome Jim Bauer asour new Chief DevelopmentOfficer. Jim brings withhim a long history ofphilanthropy effort in ourcommunity and has alreadyrecruited some strong teammembers. Jim’s vision forthe Foundation is refreshingand we look forward tocollaborating with him, nowand for many years to come.KATHY GORDON, PAST BOARD CHAIROn the other hand, 2020 is also unprecedented for heart-filling stories.Selfless generosity was everywhere! The foundation targeted needs foruseful COVID relief but also added: Scholarships to the future nurses in our communities. Mindfulness training and grief counseling for front-line staff. Testing equipment that gets faster results to Salem citizens. Vaccinations, tests and protection for vulnerable people. These are powerful examples of what you make happen through yoursupport of the Salem Health Foundation. Please indulge me as I make a pitch about the foundation: Support usfirst when you want to make a local difference in health care for thevulnerable and underserved. Support us first when you believe thathealth care is best delivered by Salem caregivers. Support us first ifyou think your single voice needs to be significant and important inhelping others with health care support. Together, we are the catalystthat turns your interest in helping others into action that makes adifference. Your support will do good things for others.

Providing world-classsupport to our communityAlex Casebeer, Chair, Salem Health Foundation board of directorsANY EXTRAORDINARY PLACE for living and working offers easyaccess to quality health care. Our Salem area is no exception. Asboard chair of the Salem Health Foundation, I assure you that ourwork serves an important purpose in bringing quality health careto Salem residents. Where Salem Health is delivering the highestquality care through its hospitals and clinics, the foundation comesalongside and adds very valuable assistance in areas of genuine need.A COLLABORATIVERESPONSE TOCOVID-19 BECAMEPlease permit me to use an analogy to describe the relationshipbetween Salem Health and the Salem Health Foundations.Imagine that Salem Health is a world-class athlete. No stretch ofthe imagination as Salem Health is a top 8% performer among allhospitals in the United States. Imagine Salem Health as an athletewho is constantly seeking to deliver peak performance. No stretchwith this either, as Salem Health rigorously engages in practices forcontinuously improving the quality of their care. Now, imagine thatthe foundations are a means of providing this athlete with extrasupport. The foundations provide a thoughtful and useful portfolioof encouragement, equipment, sustenance, and energy. We receiveyour support; we use it for nourishment, they use it for performance, and together we find broader successes and better health care for ourcommunity.A REALITY DUE TOYOUR SUPPORTIndividuals and 67businesses donatedpersonal protectiveequipment (PPE) —including masks, faceshields, and gloves. We purchasednew ventilatorsfor 279,000.We supported thestartup of AlluviumMobile Health Team(alluv.org) by grantingthem 18,000.

What is new? We pivoted when COVID-19hit, and we distributed a remarkableamount of assistance and care. This year ofextraordinary circumstances required that welook outside our regular support areas. Weextended our resources and employed yourgenerosity to add support toward improvingareas of community health. We helped withthe startup of Alluvium, who is finding localsuccess by directing aid to many who arealone, without means, without homes, andwho have an extreme and chronic illness.Your support aided the vulnerable many whoneeded transportation support, transitionalhousing support, or who required extra safetyor cancer care. Our community was generous with anextraordinary outpouring of meals and treatsfor health care workers. The foundationscame alongside this community generosityand delivered important health supportintended to address the stress shoulderedby health care employees. We offered griefsupport, mindfulness and stress reductiontools, a free cup of coffee, and sometimes acaring ear. Your generosity to the foundationkept the Salem community better supportedand nurtured around health care.On behalf of the board of directors, pleaseaccept my offer of thanks for your support ofthe foundation and your demonstrated carefor the health of the Salem area community. We have some extraordinary plans to domore, to do better, and to make valuableinvestments that will improve livability inSalem, and we need your continuing supportto make this happen! I believe the SalemHealth Foundation influences the quality ofcare in our communities. I hope that you willsee this clearly in the information discussedin this annual report.when COVIDhit, and wedistributed aremarkableamount ofassistanceand care.We pouredmore than7,500 cupsof coffee. The Foundation funded 140,000 in protectiveequipment (CAPR andPAPR*) for staff at Salemand WestValley Hospitals.*CAPR: Controlled AirPurifying Respirator; PAPR:Powered Air PurifyingRespiratorWe pivotedCommunity membersand businesses providedmore than 26,000 mealsand countless treats. We covered the cost forone-year subscriptionsto a leading stressmanagement andmeditation app for allSalem Health staff.

Caring for emergency caregiversThe SalemHealthFoundationinvested 57,000 forwhat becamethe encyProgram.“There is a true emotional cost to selflesslycaring for people that are themselvestraumatized and distressed,” said AmieWittenberg, director of Salem Hospital’semergency department, trauma programand psychiatric services. “This unique areaof care can expose employees to a kindof fatigue, which can drive a sense of lowaccomplishment, exhaustion or inabilityto cope. We don’t want this kind of fatigueto cause employees to consider leavingthe department, hospital or even theirprofession.”Our desire to keep our quality of care highled us to seek improvements to the situationin our emergency department. We analyzedsurveys, developed metrics and soughtsolutions that would address the emotionalcosts being experienced by employees.Evidence showed that 86% of staff hadexperienced at least one of the three classicsymptoms related to their work: exhaustion, depersonalization, or a reduced sense ofpersonal accomplishment. In July 2019, emergency department leadersdevised a one-year pilot program effort toaddress their concerns. Local crisis chaplainsagreed to provide on-call and regular roundingsupport for doctors and employees in theemergency department. The Salem HealthFoundation saw their need and invested 57,000 for what became the Salem HealthEmergency Department First ResponderResiliency Program. The leadership teamcontinued their efforts for improvement bycreating a training program for staff thatemphasized stress management, compassionfatigue and avoiding vicarious traumatization. They developed an ongoing culture shift thatemphasized improving resiliency.

“This literallyhas kept mein this job!Thank you,Salem HealthFoundation, for loving us inthe emergencydepartmentthrough yourgeneroussupport!”“I contacted ourstaff resiliencychaplain, andhe made a worldof difference. Iam EXTREMELYthankfulfor havingthis serviceavailable to us.”Leaders also received a stream of positivefeedback (see samples above). This effortproduced immediate changes in theemployee experience. In the first few months, emergency department leadership receiveddata that showed these significant results:The staff’s professional resiliency and jobsatisfaction scores jumped from 39% to 79%.The staff turnover rate also dropped by nearly50% — from 14% down to nearly 7%.Ralph Yates, DO, Salem Health chief medicalofficer, said: “Salem Health and the SalemHospital emergency department leadership“Thanksfor yourcommitmentto us duringour hard times— and justbeing present.Sometimesjust sittingand having aconversationis really what Ineed to catchmy breath andfill my abilityto continue toserve.”“I had a patientdie from acritical incident, and it was superhelpful to havea chaplain todebrief with, soI could pick upand successfullycare for my nextpatient.”team are committed to creating a cultureof resiliency. This work demonstrates howour partnership with the Salem HealthFoundation helped us deliver improvementsto employee resiliency and emotional health.Clearly, the work thus far indicates this is anessential and useful investment in improvedtraining and better support for self-care.”Innovative efforts like the Salem HealthEmergency Department First ResponderResiliency Program would not be possiblewithout the support of those who generouslydonate to the Salem Health Foundation.“I feel thisprogram iscritical to frontline caregiversand specificallyour mentalhealth. It’s awonderful wayto support ourdepartment.”

A scholarly boost for father and sonFoundation scholarship program also hits major milestoneJON AND PARKER DEMING, father and son,are both attending college to advance theirmedical careers.Jon has worked at Salem Health since 2009,first as a nurse, then in administrationwith physician peer review, and as interimmanager of the lab.
