Page 8F;ditor,'s Note: This is Part 4 of theU. S. Consumer Product Safety'::ommission's report on skateboarjingo In this section, they outline the'11ain things that go wrong , with quipment to create accidents. Therong list in the text would make a good-:heck list for beginning riders; they can'JSe it to thoroughly check over their70ard before they buy and after it has7een ridden a while.Next month's article will be the'::ommission's conclusions of theirfindings.Between one and two percent of theIljUlies reported during the specialtudy period were attributed to productausation. This was determined bylefining a product caused accident as.ny accident reported in one of theollowing hazard patterns:-Wheel Came Off- Board Broke or Cracked-Other Skateboard Failure- Board Stopped Suddenlyfhe first three patterns were chosen on:he basis of a review of incidents onfile. The fourth pattern "Board topped Suddenly" was included toidentify incidents involving wheel orDearing failure. All accidents reportedfor these patterns were assigned for in:lepth investigation. This was a con;ervative measure in terms of identifying product failures, for it allowed1S to eliminate cases which were, infact, not product failures. If the inv-estigation did not eliminate the:eported product failure, or if it waslot possible to complete an inv-estigation, the case was assumed to;onstitute a product failure. However, in addition to incidents of; roduct failure, there is an un-HAZARD R PORTdetermined proportion of accidentsinvolving the product as a contributingfactor. Appendix C is a summary of 35incidents from CPSC files of productfailures or contributions to accidents.Because accident sequences involvingfeatures of skateboards have occurredin a variety of patterns other than thefour patterns labeled product failure, itappears likely that the proportion ofaccidents which are in some degreeattributable to the skateboard issomewhat higher than one or twopercent.In-depthinvestigations,consumer complaints and personsoutside the commission who areassociated with the sport provided thefollowingadditionalinformationabout characteristics of skateboardswhich can affect the probability of anaccident.- Axle bolts which are too short and donot have sufficient room for the wheelretaining nut to fit all the way on.-Retaining nuts without, any type ofcrimping to prevent the nut fromworking its way off while in use.-Wheel arrangements which allowretaining nuts to tighten to the pointthat free turning of the wheel isinhibited.-Bearings which are neither shieldednor sealed which can be affected bydirt or water.- Absence of or inadequate isolatersbetween parts of the truckingmechanism ' and between the trucking- Nylon bearings, some of which canmelt due to heat build up.- Metal boards can become sharpenedalong the edges from contact with theground.mechanism and the deck, resulting inhigh levels of vibration.-Wheel assemblies sold with some ofthe ball bearings missing.-Insufficient flexibility in truckingmechanism which does not allow therider full control of the board.- Loose or missing screws from truck todeck assembly resulting in inability tocontrol the board.- Insufficient distance between deckand wheels which results in deckcontact with the wheels, particularlywhile turning -Wheels made of materials such asmetal or clay whi
