Keynote speakers include Darrel Weaver, M.D., Medical Director of Blue Cross Blue Shield ofAlabama, and Steve Lovelady, M.D., MDVIP. The Forum’s aim is to emphasize the importance of liberal artseducation in the study and practice of medicine. Students will have the opportunity to engage inconversation with forum keynote speakers, invited health care professionals, faculty members, and otherguests of the College, regarding humanistic and social issues in medicine.This year’s forum will be co-sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama and the College of Arts andSciences. This symposium is open to all pre-health students and is a great opportunity to talk with medicalprofessionals as well as your peers about current events in medicine. Each workshop will cover all of the above topics. Workshops will be held on Mondays andWednesdays beginning January 25th. R.S.V.P. at r-thesophomore-workshop-series/.UA-Pickens County Partnership FellowshipAbout the PartnershipThe UA-Pickens County Partnership is a novel academic-community health care partnership aimed atimproving the health and well-being of residents in Pickens County, Alabama, via sustainable, innovativeprojects that take place within the community. Projects address both explicit health issues and services aswell as underlying social determinants of health. The UA-Pickens County Partnership seeks outstandingindividuals to work in and with the county and serve as liaisons between The University of Alabama and thePickens County community. Fellows work with UA faculty and staff along with community agencies andcitizens on these projects while also gaining invaluable community work experience that will serve themwell in their career development. The inaugural 2016-2017 fellows and faculty project directors haveinitiated and participated in a range of projects including community gardening to address the prevalence offood deserts in the area, mental health assessments in pre-school children, school-based health riskassessments, creation of a local rurally-based cardiac rehabilitation program, a health law clinic, nutritionalcooking classes to mitigate the county’s high rates of chronic disease, and geriatric programming to aid thecommunity’s aging population.“Gap-Year” Fellowship:The UA-Pickens County Partnership is seeking applicants to participate in our second cohort of thisyear-long, paid “gap year” fellowship. We anticipate selecting up to six individuals, who must be completinga degree at UA this year, for this year-long program which will begin in June 2017. It is open to thosefrom all majors and disciplines who are passionate about promoting health in medically-underserved areasand might be of special interest to those in fields such as pre-law, pre-med, nursing, business, social work,and education. This program provides summer research internships for all students 18 years and older, with a focuson recruiting students underrepresented in the biomedical, behavioral, and clinical sciences(American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian/PacificIslander), graduating 2017 college seniors are eligible to apply.Applicants must be at least 18 years old by May 31, 2017, must be enrolled in a higher educationinstitution, and must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States.Interns work with NIDA funded scientists at research institutions across the United States for 8weeks in the field of substance abuse and addiction research.
