The Department of Physical Therapy supports the educational view that students learn in amultitude of ways, necessitating a variety of learning experiences. These experiences are important for the development of a lifelong autonomous learner who is self-motivated and self-directed. The departmental faculty are a resource and role model in thedevelopment of these traits by providing quality instruction, contributing to the general body of knowledge through an activeresearch agenda, maintaining personal clinical competence including the operation of on-campus Physical Therapy clinic, demonstrating professionalism, respecting the dignity of others and advocacy for patient and professional causes. It is the goal ofthe faculty to help students to become educated members of society, active members of their profession and role models forpeers and future physical therapists.Expected Global Student OutcomesGraduates of the Marquette University, Department of Physical Therapy will:1. Demonstrate the skills necessary to practice autonomously within a direct access environment in essential practiceareas as defined by the Guide to Physical Therapist Practice.2. Use testing and differential diagnosis to screen individuals in order to determine appropriateness for Physical TherapyServices, and/or to determine the need for referral to other health professionals.3. 11ABSENCESStudents who are ill or anticipate absence for a family emergency must contact the physical therapy office immediately. Allstudents must consult with the instructor of the course(s) missed for makeup if necessary. Absences totaling two or moreweeks at any time in the program may be considered as grounds for repeating the entire term.Anticipated absences from full-time clinic must be approved in advance by one of the Directors of Clinical Education atMarquette University and the Center Coordinator of Clinical Education at the clinical site. Emergency absences, illnesses, etc., are circumstances usually considered to be acceptable absences if they are substantiated by the Coordinators.ACADEMIC STANDARDS – PROFESSIONAL PHASEA student must complete the academic requirements of the DPT program within four years of enrollment in theprofessional phase of the program in the fall semester of the DPT-4 year, unless there are non-academic extenuatingcircumstances. Failure to complete the PT program requirements within the 4-year time limit may result in dismissal fromthe program. During the professional phase of the program a student will be considered in GOOD ACADEMICSTANDING if he/she completes the required course work in each semester with a 2.40 or greater semester GPA,completes each course with a grade of C or better, and receives a satisfactory (S) grade in each practicum experience.Only those students who have satisfactorily completed the didactic portion of the Department’s curriculum preceding theinternship will be allowed to participate in clinical internship experiences.GPA CALCULATIONFollowing acceptance into the professional phase of the program, students follow the curriculum as outlined for thethree-year professional phase unless prior approval is obtained from the department chairperson. Due to the designof the physical therapy curriculum and sequencing of courses, academic difficulties will likely cause delay ofgraduation for the student.Grade points are awarded on a 0 to 4 scale: *A 4.00; A- 3.67; B 3.33; B 3.00; B- 2.67; C 2.33;C 2.00; C- 1.67; D 1.33; D 1.00; and an F is 0 grade points. A grade point average is calculated bydividing the total grade points achieved (grade points for grade earned x course credits) by th
