UAW Region 6 CollectionRecords, l939-l970(Predominantly, l950-l968)40.25 linear feetAccession #533OCLC #The records of UAW Region 6 were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs inl972 by Al Haene and were opened for research in March of l986.Region 6 is the western region of the UAW, comprising the states of California, Arizona,Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii. Its headquarters has beenin the Los Angeles area since the early l950's.The first official UAW organizer sent to California by the International Executive Boardwas Richard Coleman in November of l936. Los Angeles area Local l88 and Bay AreaLocal 76 had already been chartered and strikes were in progress at Douglas, SantaMonica and Northrup. He concentrated his first efforts on the West Coast auto industryand hired Charlie West and Charles Rogers to help in organizing. The first localschartered were 2l5 at Willys Overland in Los Angeles, 2l6 at GM South Gate, and 406 atFord Long Beach.Organizing increased in aircraft as the industry grew with defense preparations andaircraft workers sought to gain parity with auto workers. The UAW found itself incompetition with the IAM and also faced severe anti-union attitudes on the part of aircraftemployers.Irvan Carey became director of the Western Region, as it was then called, in late l937.When the UAW IEB formally established geographic regions, regional offices anddirectors in their May, l938 meeting, the Western Region became Region 6 withCalifornia, Arizona, Utah, Washington, Nevada, Oregon and Idaho included in itsjurisdiction. When R.J. Thomas replaced Homer Martin in l939, Carey was expelled from the Unionand a committee of District Council 5 assumed temporary directorship of the region. LewMichener, who served on the committee, became director later in the year.Aircraft organizing accelerated during the prewar period, often accompanied by strikes. The most notable of these strikes was that at North American Aviation at Inglewood, where ll,000 workers organized into Local 683 walked out because the War Labor Boardrefused to meet their wage demands. Richard T. Frankensteen, who represented theUAW, was unable to persuade the workers to return to work in his famous "bean field

speech." After nine days, President Roosevelt ordered U.S. Army troops to seize theplant and wage increases were negotiated. Local 683 was dissolved and replaced in Julyl94l by Local 887. Michener faced charges at the l94l convention and was disqualifiedfrom running for election to. Jack Montgomery was elected director and served until l943when Michener was again elected to the position. When Michener entered militaryservice in December, 1944, Cyril V. O'Halloran replaced him. O'Halloran served asdirector until l955, when Charles Bioletti was elected to the office. With the contraction of the aircraft industry in the 1950's, membership diminished, but bythe end of the decade, there was renewed activity in the Anaheim area. Membershipincreased to about 65,000 workers in some thirty-two locals by l965. In l962 a call for a60-day moratorium by President Kennedy was needed to avert a strike at North AmericanAviation, where negotiations had stalled over the issue of the union shop.Paul H. Schrade, longterm president of Local 887, became regional director in l962.Later that year Region 6 absorbed Alaska and Hawaii into its jurisdiction. Schrade'sadministration saw increased participation of the regional office in a wide range ofcauses, including involvement with COPE and voter registration drives. The mostnotable activity in this area was the UAW's strong support of the United Farm Workersunder Cesar Chavez.Schrade was defeated for reelection in l972 and succeeded by R. Jerry Whipple asdirector. Whipple served until January l973, when he resigned and was replaced byBruce A. Lee.The UAW Region 6 Collection includes regional office files from the early l940's throughthe l960's, encompassing the administrations of directors Cyril O'Halloran, CharlesBioletti and Paul Schrade.Important subjects covered in the collection are:Aircraft industryAircraft organizingEarly West Coast organizingUAW International Executive BoardUAW Locals l48, l79, 2l6, 8ll, 887Among the important correspondents are:Charles BiolettiArnold CallanWilliam GoldmanCyril V.
