I M PAC T O F G I V I N GNewfound freedom forpatients thanks to yourgenerosityDuring last year’s virtual Call to Give, our generoussupporters contributed over 130,500 for the purchaseof two Ekso devices. The Ekso is a wearable, batteryoperated bionic exoskeleton that enables patients withlower extremity weakness or partial paralysis to stand andwalk on level surfaces. Because the device is not mountedor otherwise fixed, it allows patients to practice moredynamic activities such as forward stepping, sit to standtransfers, squats, and side stepping.Originally the device was designated solely for stroke andincomplete spinal cord injury rehabilitation. However, in2020, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approvedthe use of the Esko with patients who have experiencedboth traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and non-traumaticbrain injuries (n-TBI). With this clearance, Bryn MawrRehab Hospital has been able to expand the use of thedevice to a broader group of patients. Our therapists individually assess each patient to ensureappropriate treatment based on their injuries and goals. Each session focuses on specific gait training goals thepatient, physician and therapist establish together. Withthe help of our highly trained therapists and support staff, over 54,000 steps have been taken using the Ekso devicesince August 2020.Thanks to the support of our Art Ability donors each year,Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital continues to grow and providethe best quality patient care.14

C U R ATO R ’ S L E T T E R : B AC K T O WO R KGaby HeitArt Ability CuratorIs it coincidence or meant-to-be that our ArtAbility 2021 featured artwork by Jen Dacota istitled Back to School? We selected this happyartwork without knowing the title or whetherwe’d be back again with a virtual event, orreally back to celebrating in person at BrynMawr Rehab. The Art Ability staff came backto work on-site and prepared a virtual event, with hopes to also celebrate in person.Although far from ideal, working off-sitehas had its silver linings. It was easy to meetwith artists from across the country andaround the globe in our scheduled ArtistSocials on Zoom. For the first time, we couldput (unmasked) faces to names, and artistscould share tips and experiences with otherartists they’ve admired for years. Many artistsreported that they were able to experimentand try new techniques with their extra timeat home. Others, unfortunately, who dependon the art centers and studio spaces that wereclosed, couldn’t work on art projects. Whilesome of our regular Art Ability artists decidedto take the year off from submitting to shows,we also had an unexpected surge in firsttime applicants. Twenty-five percent of theexhibiting artists are new to Art Ability!Experimental or not, the subject matter isclearly home-grown. Photographers focuson local wildlife and personal gardens. Thecomforts of home, including pets, domesticscenes and both traditional and creativestill lifes, dominate the painting categories.Unsurprisingly, there are many depictions ofquiet solitude and isolation—an empty field,a single figure on a beach, a mountain peak,a lone tree, a distant moon. Some artists, looking forward to when they might travelagain, created vacation landscape dreams ofthe future, based on the past. We may not get100 percent back to pre-pandemic times, butwe’re optimistic and eager to get back.Thank you to the Art Ability Committee, staff, jurors and judges for their hard workin making this exhibition possible in suchuncertain times. A special thanks to our ArtAbility Coordinator, Cristine Largoza, whoseguidance remains invaluable.
