These displaced people are inurgent need of shelter, food, water and medicine. Cameroon – Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons ResponseThe northern region of Cameroon currently hosts more than 439,000 refugees from Chad,Nigeria and Central African Republic and 321,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).Many have fled drought or violence, including threats from Boko Haram, and have noaccess to healthcare. On the ground partner International Medical Corps runs severalhealthcare facilities in the region and supports community-based surveillance andtreatment of diseases with epidemic potential, including polio, cholera and COVID-19. A teamof 100 frontline workers provides primary care with an emphasis on reproductive andmaternal health, nutrition and the fight against HIV/AIDS. Eswatini – Hope and Healing International / TLCEswatini’s population faces many health issues, including the highest rate of HIVinfection in the world (27%) and one of the lowest life expectancies (58 years). InEswatini, HPIC works with on the ground partner Hope and Healing/TLC whichoffers free, comprehensive and compassionate healthcare through its central clinicand a mobile clinic that serves rural areas. Ethiopia – Humanitarian ResponseIn late 2020, war broke out between the Federal government of Ethiopia and the regionalgovernment of Tigray. Large scale fighting ensued, consuming Amhara and Afar regionsand blocking the only route for humanitarian supplies to reach the northern half of thecountry. HPIC responded by sending Humanitarian Medical Kits to the Tigray regionthrough its on the ground partner Children Believe and continues to investigate otherroutes into Northern Ethiopia. Iraqi Kurdistan –Barzani Charity FoundationSince the first indication of crisis in Syria, HPIC has been working to deliver muchneeded medicines and supplies to refugee camps in Iraqi Kurdistan. As of 2021, thenumber of internally displaced Iraqis and Syrian refugees in Kurdistan has reachedover 2 million. In collaboration with local on the ground partner Barzani CharityFoundation, HPIC sends regular shipments of Humanitarian Medical Kits and bulkmedicines to be distributed in refugee camp clinics and hospitals affected bymedicine shortages. Kenya – Women and Children Health InitiativeIn 2021, HPIC continued its commitment to theWomen and Children Health Initiativeimplemented by the Salvation Army KenyaWest. Since 2014, this partnership hasprovided tools for measuring and monitoringthe health of pregnant mothers and childrento ensure that mothers have themultivitamins, nutritional supplements andpain medications needed to have a safepregnancy and birth and to ensure their babiesthrive. In 2021, the following Pharmascienceproducts supported this ofloxacinPMS-FluconazoleLactulosePediatric Electrolyte SachetsIndia – COVID-19 Delta Variant ResponseIn June 2021, public health systems in India wereoverwhelmed by a spike in the number of cases ofthe deadly Delta variant of COVID-19. HPICresponded by sending much-needed inhalers tohealth facilities in the State of Kerala, providingtreatment to more than 2,000 people. Theseincluded 1 mg, 1.25 mg and 5 mg Salbutamolinhalers from Pharmascience.
Lebanon – Political and Economic CrisesMore than a year after the Beirut blast,the need in Lebanon remains great. Atwo-year financial meltdown in thecountry has now hit its crunch pointand with its currency in freefall,Lebanon has struggled to importmedicines and many cannot afford toseek what healthcare services remain.HPIC remains committed to supportingthe people of Lebanon as the situationcontinues to worsen. Malawi – Dzaleka Refugee CampEstablished by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in 1994 in response to the surgeof refugees fleeing genocide and violence in Rwanda, Burundi and Democratic Republicof Congo, Dzaleka Refugee Camp has just one Health Centre. Serving more than 70,000individuals within and around the camp, the Dzaleka Health Centre has struggled to copeduring the COVID-19 pandemic.
