GLOSSARY OF GOTHICNET REGISTRATIONADD: entering a class on your schedule. For a quick tutorial go towww.njcu.edu/registrar and click on the registration link.CANCELLED CLASS: the class will not be taught. It will notappear if you do a Class Search. If you are enrolled in a class that iscancelled, you will be notified and you will automatically receive arefund within 30 days.CLASS DETAIL SCREEN: Reach this screen from the ClassSearch Results screen by clicking the blue link with the 4-digitClass Number to the right of the word Section. It is important thatyou read the information presented on this screen for each class inwhich you are planning to enroll.CLASS NOTES: This section appears on the specific Class Detailscreen for each class, and contains information such as Departmentor Instructor consent required, pre- or co-requisites, special classmeeting dates. It is important that you read the notes for each classin which you are planning to enroll.CLASS NUMBER: The unique 4-digit number identifying aparticular section of a course offered for a particular term.CLASS SEARCH: Procedure to lookup availability and detailedinformation about courses being offered in a given term. ClassSearch Results will display all scheduling information for theseclasses. Begin the class search at your Student Center screen byclicking on the green SEARCH FOR CLASSES bar at the upperright.CLOSED CLASS: The class will be taught, but there are no morespaces available for enrollment at this time. The class will notappear if you do a Class Search, unless you click on the OpenClasses Only check box first to remove this criterion, which willthen present both open and closed classes. A BLUE SQUARE forthe status indicates a class is closed. (A GREEN CIRCLE indicatedit is open.)COURSE CAREER: This represents the level of courses you aredoing a Class Search for. Select Graduate.COURSE NUMBER: The 3-digit number designating a coursewith a specific title offered by an Academic Department.COURSE SUBJECT: The Academic Department that offers thecourse.DEPARTMENT (OR INSTRUCTOR) CONSENT REQUIRED:Before attempting to enroll, students must first contact theDepartment (or Instructor, appropriate) for consent to enroll,and must receive a Permission # (see below) to be entered in thecomputer during enrollment.DROP: removing a class from your schedule (with no indication onthe schedule that you had been enrolled). For a quick tutorial go towww.njcu.edu/registrar and click on the registration link.ENROLLMENT APPOINTMENT: The date and time after whichyou will be permitted to enroll in a class for a particular term.7Fall 2016 Graduate Course ScheduleHOLDS: a student may be blocked from enrollment for suchreasons as academic performance; 12-credit limit reached withoutmatriculating into a degree program; balance due to the Bursar;immunization records not up to date; or other reasons.PERMISSION NUMBER: A unique 4-6 digit number assignedto each student who receives Department or Instructor consentfor enrollment in a specific class in a specific term. Students mustobtain permission number from department chair to be able toenroll for class. Once a Class Number has been entered (or if aclass has been selected thru the Class Search), the next screen willcontain a box to the right of the words Permission Nbr. Enter thePermission # in the box and then click the green NEXT bar at thelower right of the screen, and then continue.SWAP: DROP one class and ADD another through a singleprocess. For a quick tutorial go to www.njcu.edu/registrar and clickon the Registration link.WAITLIST: Allow a student to place his/her name on a “Waitlist”to be enrolled once a seat becomes available. A yellow triangle forthe status indicates waitlist. For a quick tutorial go to www.njcu.edu/registrar and click on the registration link.WITHDRAW: changing your enrollment status to indicate thatyou will no longer attend the class, after the last date to DROPa class. Your schedule will continue to indicate that your statusis “Enrolled,” and a grade of “W” will appear on your currentschedule and will also be permanently entered on your transcript.Furthermore, depending on the date of your withdrawal, you willreceive either a 50% or zero refund. NOTE: Withdrawals cannot bedone online. You must submit a Withdrawal Form to the Registrar’sOffice. Go online to: http://gothicnet.njcu.edu; Log In; click onthe Student Dashboard tab to view theinformation.100-HOUR REQUIREMENTNew Jersey City University is a registeredprovider of Professional DevelopmentPrograms for teachers that will counttowards the 100-hour requirement (providernumber 2433).GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPSA limited number of graduate assistantshipsare available each year to highly qualifiedgraduate students. The GraduateAssistantship covers tuition and feesfor full-time study (9-15 credits persemester). This tuition waiver is taxable.Graduate Assistants are required to workin a University department or office for18 hours/week, for which they receive astipend of 3,500 over the academic year( 1,750 per semester). Graduate Assistantsmay not hold a full-time job either insideor outside the University, and they may notbe Graduate Assistants during a semesterwhen they are doing student teaching.Graduate Assistants may also apply forDirect Federal Student Loans to assist withcosts related to full-time graduate study.For the full year, the initial deadline date forapplications for graduate assistantships isApril 1 and most appointments are made byJune 30. For spring semester assistantshipsonly, the deadline is December 1. (Theseare rare.) To be eligible, a student must bematriculated in a degree program.In addition to meeting matriculationrequirements, applicants should write aletter to the Provost and attach a resume.The letter should discuss the educationalgoals the applicant would like to achievethrough the Assistantship and through fulltime degree study, prior work experienceand skills, and academic background. Ifthe applicant has already begun graduatestudies at NJCU, he or she should discusshis or her initial progress. Applicants mayapply for a Graduate Assistantship at thesame time that they apply for graduateadmission and matriculation, but theywill not become eligible until theirmatriculation has been approved by theirdepartment.The applicant may specify an office ordepartment that would be of particularinterest for employment, but this is notrequired. Itprovides a 100 tuition discount for eachof their first two classes. Note that alumnimay not receive both the Legacy Scholarshipand the Stimulus Scholarship on theirfirst two classes, so normally studentswill prefer to receive the larger StimulusScholarship.
