HOLTC HA IR MA N A ND C E OS P U R S S P ORTS & ENTERTA INME N TNow in his 17th season as Chairman and CEO he and his wife,Julianna Hawn Holt, bought into the Spurs ownership group in 1996 since that time the organization has enjoyed unprecedented growthand success four NBA championships, a successful campaign fora new arena and two new San Antonio-based sports franchises areamong the accomplishments achieved during Holt’s tenure thanksin part to the AT&T Center – which opened in November of 2002 –the organization is now known as Spurs Sports and Entertainment with over 200 fulltime employees, Spurs Sports & Entertainment runs four professional sportsfranchises – the Spurs, Silver Stars, Rampage and the Austin Toros – while also managing theday-to-day operations of the AT&T Center over the last 14 seasons (since Tim Duncan joinedthe team in 1997–98) the Spurs have posted a regular season record of 780-336 the team’swinning percentage of .699 during that span is the best of any team in the four major sports (MLB,NBA, NFL and NHL) during the Duncan era the Spurs have captured four NBA championships(1999, 2003, 2005 and 2007) the Spurs organization has twice been named the best franchisein professional sports (2003 and 2005) and been ranked the top NBA franchise six times in theannual ESPN The Magazine Ultimate Standings survey (each year the Ultimate Standings ranksevery professional team in a formula using analysis of team financial data combined with fanfeedback in which over 55,000 fans judge teams by eight factors including players, bang for thebuck, ownership, and stadium experience the Ultimate Standings debuted in 2003 and theSpurs are the only franchise to have been named the top overall team twice among the four majorsports since ESPN introduced its annual survey) Holt was ranked as the top NBA “UltimateBoss” and second overall among all sports owners in the 2011 standings based on the criteriaof honesty, commitment to their communities and loyalty to their core players in June of 2007SS&E purchased the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League (the Spurs are one of fiveNBA teams – along with the Cavaliers, Lakers, Thunder and the Warriors – to own and operatetheir own D-League team) the great-grandson of Benjamin Holt, developer of the first practicaltrack-type tractor and one of the two predecessor companies that formed Caterpillar Inc. servesas the CEO of San Antonio-based HOLT CAT (the firm still displays several of Ben Holt’s earlytractors outside its headquarters) which is the largest Caterpillar dealership in the United States born in Peoria, Illinois lived in San Antonio as a child before moving to Corpus Christi, wherehe graduated from high school served two years in the U.S. Army during which time he earneda Silver Star, three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart from his one-year tour of duty in Vietnam ended his military service as a Sergeant E5 actively involved in an effort to construct aneducation center under the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C a staunch believer incommunity service is proud of the Spurs commitment to South Texas and its residents (in 2000the Spurs earned the Pro Team Community Award presented by the World Sports HumanitarianHall of Fame, an award presented annually to the professional sports franchise that best illustratesexceptional community involvement and fosters community pride and spirit) among the Spurscommunity efforts are the Spurs Youth Basketball League, the annual countywide United Waycampaign and a variety of educational outreach programs which service over 85 percent of theelementary schools in Bexar County (during the 2010–11 season over 200,000 area studentswere touched by the various SS&E education programs) Holt’s own efforts include a lengthylist of community service positions appointed to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission byGovernor Rick Perry in 2003 and served as chairman from 2007 – 2011 a member of the WorldPresidents’ Organization, the Free Trade Alliance San Antonio and the San Antonio EconomicDevelopment Foundation is the Business Chair of the Consortium of Partners for San Antonio’s2012 No Kill initiative 2009 recipient of Woodrow Wilson Award for Public Service serves asboard member of the Bexar County Performing Arts Center Foundation serves on the advisoryboard of the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas past chairman of theUnited Way of San Antonio and Bexar County named to the Texas Business Hall of Fame in2004 he and Julianna have been Spurs season ticket holders since 1988.FRONT OFFICE53
