Academic DressThe history of academic dress can be traced back to statutesadopted in 14th century Europe. The primary influence foracademic dress may have been ecclesiastical, civilian, or justpractical to provide warmth in unheated buildings. In the U.S.the wearing of academic apparel dates back to colonial times. In1895 a commission of leading American educators devised auniform code of academic dress which was modified in 1932 bythe American Council on Education.GOWNS: The degree is signified by the style of academicrobes. An oblong, open sleeve indicates bachelor’s degree; apointed sleeve is used on robes for the master’s degree; thedoctoral robe has a bell-shaped sleeve and the robe may befaced on the front with black or colored velvet with three barsof the same across the sleeves.CAPS: Mortarboards are generally worn as part of theacademic dress. It is customary for degree candidates to wearthe tassels on the right front side before the degrees areconfirmed and to shift them to the left when degrees areawarded.HOODS: Hoods are lined with the official colors of the collegeor university conferring the degree. The binding or edging ofthe hood is the color indicating the field of study. Dr. Matthews Lan is a graduate of the Class of 2013 atCSW and grew up in nearby Hockessin. While at Charter,he was involved in Science Olympiad, Math League,Science Ambassadors, and Student Council, for which heserved as Senior Class President.He still has very fond memories of the annual ski tripsplanned by the Messingers and making "10 Minutes" videos with his fellowStudent Council members, as well as the drama of planning Homecomingand Prom.He then attended the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 2017 with aB.A. in Biochemistry and Economics as well as an M.S. in Chemistry. Mattthen went straight to medical school at Vanderbilt University School ofMedicine, graduating recently with his M.D. in 2021. He came back closer tohome after matching into the Neurosurgery residency program at ThomasJefferson University Hospital, where he is currently finishing his first year ofresidency and will (hopefully) graduate in 2028.He credits Charter for fostering his love of science and medicine as well ashis interest in neuroscience when he took the Neuroscience elective class inhis senior year.
HistoryIn 1995 a group of visionary leaders from the Wilmington businesscommunity, encouraged by then Governor Thomas R. Carper, joined forceswith educational leaders from the Wilmington area and from the Red ClayConsolidated School District to form Delaware’s first public charter school- The Charter School of Wilmington.The vision shared by this group of leaders was to create a world-classeducational system for the state of Delaware and to insure that Delaware’spublic school system would become a national model. The foundingcompanies, AstraZeneca, Christiana Care Health System, Delmarva Power,DuPont, Ashland Incorporated, and Verizon, worked to establish this schoolby sharing their time, talent, and capital to get CSW up and running. Theinfluence of the founding companies is still felt today through theirrepresentation on the school’s Board of Directors.The Charter School of Wilmington’s great success over the past 27 years,while due in large measure to its talented and dedicated students andfaculty, would not have been possible without the vision, drive, anddedication of the school’s founders.Mission StatementThe mission of The Charter School of Wilmington is to prepare students tothrive through world-class mathematics, science, and technology education.
