More than 40 percent of Medgar EversCollege students are enrolled in the School of Science, Health, and Technology.CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK BACCALAUREATE FORUNIQUE AND INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIESThe CUNY Baccalaureate for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies (CUNY BA) is the University-wide,individualized degree. It is a versatile degree route for highly-motivated, self-directed students whose academicgoals transcend traditional majors. Students create their own degree plans working directly with faculty mentorsand academic advisors. While each student has a home college in the CUNY system, they are free to pursue theirstudies and take courses at any of the other colleges in the University.3

ACCELERATED STUDY IN ASSOCIATE PROGRAMSCUNY’s Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) is a comprehensive program for associate degreestudents. ASAP is designed to help associate degree-seeking students earn their degrees as quickly as possible,with a goal of graduating students within three years. Despite the strengths and assets that students bring totheir college experience, a variety of systemic barriers and personal responsibilities preclude many students fromtimely degree completion. ASAP helps eliminate these barriers by providing students with the academic, social,and financial support they need to graduate with an associate degree in no more than three years.PERCY E. SUTTON SEEK PROGRAMThe Percy E. Sutton Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge (SEEK) Program is a higher educationopportunity program that provides academic and financial support to students. The Program promotes theacademic, personal, and professional development of students by providing an array of specialized academicsupport, enrichment programs, and activities dedicated to encouraging excellence, student learning, persistence,and graduation.HEALTHCARE CAREER CONNECTION PIPELINE PROJECTThe Healthcare Career Connection Pipeline (HCCP) Project, which is funded by a grant from the NationalWorkforce Development Program in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, supported 121 highschool students and 182 college students from minority and underrepresented groups with college preparationto pursue healthcare careers. High school students are able to earn an associate degree in a health-STEM careerpathway along with their high school diploma, while college scholars complete their bachelor’s degree in Biology,Computer Science, Nursing, Psychology, or Biology.MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE BROOKLYN PIPELINEThe Medgar Evers College Brooklyn Pipeline is an intentionally designed system by which students from CentralBrooklyn are guided through a strong kindergarten to 12th grade experience to successfully transition into college.Customized programs include principal and teacher professional development, parent academy workshops, STEMeducation, summer programs, and dual credit opportunities for students to take college courses. Two thousand, onehundred and sixty-three (2,163) students from 31 Brooklyn high schools earned college credits, with 1,141 of themcurrently enrolled in CUNY colleges. This comprehensive system supports schools, not as individual entities, but asconnected organizations.SMART SCHOLARS EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMThe Smart Scholars Early College High School Program is a partnership between Medgar Evers College and MedgarEvers College Preparatory High School (MECPHS). The dual credit learning program, funded by the NY StateEducation Department, allows MECPHS students to participate in college coursework that earns them an associatedegree from the College in coordination with the completion of their high school diploma. The program increases highschool graduation and college completion rates while reducing student tuition costs.4

MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE PRESIDENTDR. PATRICIA RAMSEYDr. Patricia Ramsey was appointed by the CUNY Board of Trustees to serve as the sixthpresident of Medgar Evers College on March 22, 2021. She is the first woman president ofMedgar Evers College.Distinguished as a “National Role Model” by Minority Access, Inc., Dr. Ramsey is a leaderand scholar with a deep commitment to excellence and a passion for making a difference. Dr.Ramsey comes to Medgar Evers College from the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF),where she served as senior executive fellow. Prior to TMCF, she served as provost and vicepresident for academic affairs at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, the oldest degree-granting Historically BlackUniversity (HBCU) in the nation. For nearly 12 years, she served in various capacities at Bowie State University, aconstituent institution of the University System of Maryland and the oldest HBCU in Maryland. At Bowie State,she was a tenured full professor and served as provost, interim president, and chair of the Department of NaturalSciences. During her tenure at Bowie State, Dr. Ramsey was a thought leader behind the 149,000 square footCenter for Natural Sciences Mathematics and Nursing building. Designed and built with sustainability in mind,this 102 million project won a LEED Platinum certification.Other positions that she has held include vice president for academic affairs at Shaw University and associatevice president for development at Norfolk State University. An experienced strategist and action-oriented leader,Dr. Ramsey negotiated a 1.3 million award after only three months as a fundraising officer at Norfolk State.With a formidable talent for swiftly assessing the situation and developing a plan of action, she created theinfrastructure that resulted in 10 million in grants and contracts in less than two years at Shaw University.Globally, Dr. Ramsey has impacted higher education on the continents of Europe and Africa. In Europe, sheprovided oversight for Bowie State’s graduate programs on the military base in Heidelberg, Germany, whereshe won front-page headlines in the military news for her bold position in allowing a five-year-old militarydependent to stand proxy to receive the master’s degree for a deployed soldier. On the continent of Africa,Dr. Ramsey was one of four provosts in the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU)delegation to Liberia, where she served in an education advisory capacity to the country’s leader President EllenJohnson Sirleaf. In Nigeria, Dr. Ramsey was instrumental in the success of a biotechnology training partnershipbetween Godfrey Okoye University (GOU) in Enugu and Bowie State University. She also represented LincolnUniversity in Enugu, conducted a leadership workshop for the administration of GOU, and was an on-air radioguest at GOU-Radio.A biologist by training, Dr. Ramsey has a research interest in the biological activity of plants used in folklore,has collected 110 species of Agave in the Sonoran Desert, and traveled a 450-mile span of highway collectingSapium sebiferum (popcorn tree) leaves in the southeastern United States. Dr. Ramsey earned a Master of Sciencein Botany from Howard University, a Master of Arts in Biology from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in Biologyfrom Georgetown University. Dr. Ramsey received her undergraduate degree from Norfolk State University,where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology Education. She completed executive leadership programs inAASCU’s Millennium Leadership Initiative (MLI), Harvard’s Institute for Educational Management (IEM), andthe CIVIC Leadership Institute.Dr. Ramsey is married to Dr. Roscoe Ramsey Jr., a physician, and an ordained minister. They have three adultchildren and two grandchildren.5

DOCTOR OF FINE ARTS, HONORIS CAUSAZIGGY MARLEYZiggy Marley is an eight-time Grammy winner,Emmy winner, musician, producer, activist, andhumanitarian whose legendary career spans 40years. The eldest son of Bob and Rita Marley, hehas hewed his own path as a musical pioneer,infusing the reggae genre with funk, blues,rock, and other elements through mindfulsong-writing.Using his success to champion political andphilanthropic causes, Ziggy Marley has servedas a Goodwill Youth Ambassador for theUnited Nations and actively participates inBob Marley Foundation initiatives worldwide.He founded his own charity, URGE (UnlimitedResources Giving Enlightenment), a non-profitorganization whose mission encompassesbuilding new schools, operating health clinics,and supporting beneficiaries, including OneLove Youth Camp, Chepstowe Basic School inJamaica, and HOLA (Heart of Los Angeles).Ziggy Marley has worked with diverseartists such as Sheryl Crow, Ben Harper,Angélique Kidjo, Lisa Loeb, Tom Morello,Alanis Morissette, and Busta Rhymes. Heis also a beloved contributor to children’sentertainment. From on-camera guests spots tovoice acting original songs, his projects includeShark Tale, Dora the Explorer, The Disney Reggae Club, Wonder Pets, Third and Bird, Arthur, Sesame Street, andHBO’s Saving My Tomorrow, as well as co-curating the Saving the Earth with Music exhibit in conjunction with theGrammy Museum and the California Science Center.Ziggy Marley continues to serve as an advocate against social injustice not only through his music, but alsothrough his work as a humanitarian. He recently received the Black Press of America’s prestigious Global IconAchievement Award. In 2020, through his leadership as an entrepreneur and sought-after creative background,Ziggy Marley oversaw the marketing campaign for Bob Marley’s 75th birthday, including the curation of apictorial book with 150 rare images published this past October.In 2017, Ziggy Marley’s contributions were recognized with the George and Ira Gershwin Award for LifetimeMusical Achievement, making him the first reggae artist to receive the esteemed award in its more than threedecade history.6

DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS, HONORIS CAUSMICHAEL T. PUGHMichael T. Pugh is president and chief executiveofficer of Carver Bancorp, the holding companyfor Carver Federal Savings Bank, a federallychartered savings bank and the nation’s largestpublicly traded African- and CaribbeanAmerican operated bank, with approximately 600 million in assets and 140 employees.A banking veteran of more than 25 years, Mr.Pugh has led teams of up to 600 associatesin retail, business banking, commercial andresidential lending, and call center operations.He has also been a critical leader in banktechnology integrations, launching new linesof business, and executing new growth marketstrategies.Prior to joining Carver in August 2012, Mr.Pugh served as Capital One’s senior vicepresident, regional executive, and marketpresident of Eastern Maryland, Delaware, andWashington, D.C. Mr. Pugh was responsiblefor revenue production, customer service, andbank operations for approximately 75 bankingcenters and 3 billion in deposits. He also ledthe bank’s community development strategyfor 1,200 associates in eight counties.Before his tenure at Capital One, Mr. Pughserved as senior vice president, retail banking executive for Citizens Financial Group, Charter One Division.He led retail banking teams in the Michigan and Indiana markets with up to 67 banking centers. Mr. Pugh’saccomplishments included organically growing a new market by 400 million in deposits and leading a team tobecome the number one Small Business Administration lender in Indiana.Mr. Pugh is a board member of Carver Bancorp, Inc. and Pursuit. He also serves as a board member of several nonprofit organizations, including the Society for Financial Education and Professional Development, CommunityDevelopment Bankers Association, and Madison Square Boys and Girls Club.Mr. Pugh worked as a bank teller while earning a Bachelor of Science in Health Administration from EasternMichigan University, and he pursued a Master of Science in Financial Management from the University ofMaryland Global Campus. Mr. Pugh also earned professional certifications from Babson College and the WhartonSchool of the University of Pennsylvania.7

CLASS OF 2021 VALEDICTORIANANESIA MOISECANDIDATE FOR BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN BUSINESSAnesia Moise is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business, with a minor in PublicAdministration. In 2019, she earned an Associate in Business Administration from MedgarEvers College. Anesia was born in St. Lucia, and after becoming a U.S. resident she tookadvantage of the opportunity to work towards her college degree. As a full-time student, shefinished each semester on the Dean’s List, and she also earned the President’s List distinction.She accomplished all of this while working full time, and she is elated that she has finallyreached her goal.Anesia credits her success and wealth of knowledge to her diverse work experience across the telecoms, banking,and healthcare industries. However, she always knew that a college degree would make her more marketablewhen choosing a career. Anesia also credits her success to her faith in God, as she knows that she could not do itwithout Him.Anesia is passionate about the business side of healthcare and plans to pursue a master’s degree in HealthcareAdministration. She is dedicated to helping people and realize one’s goals through teamwork. She lives by theprinciple, “Teach what you know and ask what you don’t know,” which has carried her through her professionaland academic careers. Anesia hopes that her journey will inspire others to do their best and not settle formediocrity.CLASS OF 2021 ASSOCIATE DEGREE SCHOLARSARA SARUECANDIDATE FOR ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCESara Sarue is a junior graduating with an associate degree in science. She grew up in SpringValley, New York and currently resides in Brooklyn with her husband and five children. As achild, academic excellence was of great value to her. However, attending college was not thenorm in her family. After starting her family, Sara had a strong desire to return to school topursue an education in the sciences. Shortly after her third child was born, she began attendingMedgar Evers College, and she was subsequently on the Dean’s List every semester.While enrolled, she was fortunate to be a part of ASAP (Accelerated Study in AssociatePrograms), where she was provided with a tremendous amount of support and guidance. Sara also interned at apediatric clinic, and it was this experience that solidified her interest in pursuing a career in the healthcare field.Despite challenges posed by family obligations, work schedules, and a worldwide pandemic, Sara is graduatingsumma cum laude with an overall GPA of 3.9, and with her newborn twins in tow. She is the first in her family tograduate from college, and she hopes to continue her education and become a pediatric nurse.8

2021 STUDENT GOVERNMENTASSOCIATION PRESIDENTBROOKE SMITHCANDIDATE FOR BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN SOCIAL WORKBorn and raised in Brooklyn, Brooke Smith currently serves as president of the StudentGovernment Association. She is a member of MEC’s Office of Differently-Abled Services, a SEEKstudent, a member of the Alpha Mu chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, and a former vicechair of Disability Affairs with the University Student Senate.Brooke spent most of her career as a singer, recording songs for clients such as Disney and OldNavy. After losing her own daughter, Brooke was inspired to start The Baby Resource Center, anon-profit organization dedicated to supporting families affected by pregnancy and infant loss.Brooke has received two borough-wide proclamations: May 19 is designated as Kennedy Grey Community ServiceDay in memory of her daughter, and October 15 is designated as #goPINKandBLUE day for pregnancy and infantloss awareness.Brooke’s experiences at MEC have allowed her to realize that her true passion is advocating for and providingmental health services to people with disabilities. She aspires to become a licensed clinical social worker and directlysupport clients in her non-profit organization.Brooke is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Social Work. In the fall of 2021, she begins a one-year, acceleratedprogram to obtain her master’s degree in social work.2021 SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENTROCKELLA SANONCANDIDATE FOR BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS IN MEDIA AND THE PERFORMING ARTSRockella Sanon served as the senior class president of the Student Government Association in2020 and 2021. A life-long Brooklynite, she was born to a Haitian mother and a Guyanese father.As someone who believes in turning her dreams into a reality, Rockella aspires to become a multihyphenated actress, screenwriter, and producer. She has signed with Central Casting, the leadingbackground actor casting company in the U.S., and has already appeared as a background actor inseveral productions.In December 2020 and May 2021, Rockella co-hosted the Dr. Iola Thompson Arts Alive event, which showcased thework of MEC students and demonstrated their commitment to the creative arts through dance, music, spoken word,and more.Rockella was recently recognized as a Scholar–Athlete of the Year by the City University of New York AthleticConference (CUNYAC). As a new member of MEC’s women’s soccer team, Rockella started five games in 2019, andplayed the full 90 minutes in three contests.As an activist, Rockella supports social causes, including raising the minimum wage and ending gun violence.Rockella is graduating with honors with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Media and the Performing Arts andminoring in English Writing. In the fall of 2021, she will begin her Master of Fine Arts in Writing and Producing forTelevision at Long Island University Brooklyn.9
