FEATURED FACULTYRuselle DeBonis—Doctoral Project Inspires Free ClinicAssistant professor Ruselle DeBonis completedrequirements for the doctor of nursing practice(DNP) degree in summer 2009. As part of theprogram, she started a clinic in Waterloo to givestudents hands-on experience and provide freehealthcare to the uninsured.gave us space for a clinic where students cando hands-on learning in a slower-pacedenvironment,” DeBonis said. “Most clinicswork much too fast for students to keep up,let alone learn.”DeBonis is the first Allen College facultymember to earn the DNP. She started workingtoward the degree in fall 2007 and was part ofthe inaugural DNP class at the University ofIowa College of Nursing. She has been a nursingfaculty member at Allen since 2006 and teachesin the MSN program. She is also a family nursepractitioner at John Deere Medical Group. At the clinic, students do free head-to-toeassessments of patients, most of whom areuninsured. They also provide free cholesterol, blood pressure and blood glucose screenings.“We focus on preventative care and education,”DeBonis said. “All too often, uninsured peopleonly seek care when they have symptoms, butdiseases such as high cholesterol and high bloodpressure don’t have obvious symptoms.”While most doctoral programs focus on research, the DNP focuses on practice. “As members ofthe Allen College faculty, we are encouraged topursue doctorates,” DeBonis said. “I chose theDNP because I wanted to stay in practice andcontinue interacting with patients.”While the clinic’s main purpose is preventativecare, the health assessments sometimes lead tothe discovery of an ailment. DeBonis said, “Ifwe discover something we can’t take care of,we refer patients to providers and specialistsin the area.”Students in DNP programs learn to implementevidence-based processes and best practicesto effect organizational change. Instead ofdissertations, students are required to developand implement a project to encourageorganizational change.DeBonis began the ACE-SAP clinic to addressboth the needs of students and of the community.“The clinic is really a win-win,” she said. It alsoteaches students the importance of communityengagement and has increased their interest involunteering, DeBonis said. For her project, DeBonis proposed andimplemented the Allen CommunityEngagement-Salvation Army Partnership(ACE-SAP) clinic. “The Salvation ArmyThe clinic is open one to two days a week, andmost students working at it are in DeBonis’Advanced Health Assessment class. Studentsworking at the clinic are registered nursesstudying to become nurse practitioners.Since the clinic started, more than 37,000worth of care has been provided. According toDeBonis, the clinic is growing and has expandedto include students outside her Advanced HealthAssessment class and will soon address chroniccare of conditions such as diabetes, high bloodpressure and high cholesterol. The ACE-SAP clinic started as a project for herdoctorate, but DeBonis developed it into ateaching tool that provides service to thecommunity. “I enjoy teaching and I enjoynursing,” DeBonis said. “The clinic combinesthose two loves into one great project.”Ruselle DeBonisVernon H.
