Fenstanton Parish Church - MayThank you to the Spectrum Team for the great newsy magazine last month. Also lovely to see the church flowers on the front cover too, lovelyreminders of happier times. It was with great joy we opened our Parish Church on Easter Sundaymorning, accompanied by smiling faces, the sound of church bells and lotsof floral displays. But, with deep sadness the following Sunday, we saidprayers of thanksgiving for His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, the Duke ofEdinburgh and prayers for those who mourn his loss, especially HerMajesty the Queen and the Royal Family.Such a mixture of emotions in such a short space of time. The Archbishop of Canterbury said:“When death comes there is deep loss and profound sorrow. But in walkingwith Jesus Christ there is light rather than darkness. It is often a seeminglyfitful light for those caught up in sorrow - but it shines, it grows, it brightensand beckons. And it calls us to hope rather than despair.”As a parish, we remember those who have asked for our prayers, sometimes for the loss of a loved one, or maybe for someone who is veryill, needs long-term care, or is having a difficult time. Please do feel you cancontact us and ask to be included in our prayers, no matter whether youcome along to our church or not, we will pray for you. Please note that list of services below is subject to the restrictions forcoming out of lockdown 3 and may change at short notice. We are livestreaming our Sunday services at the Parish Church but you will need tobook in to receive the access codes for Zoom. Fenstanton and its Windmills: Part 1:.Continued fromlast monthMill Number 4:This mill stood a few hundred yards further along the Low Road. We onlyknow this as it appears on the Lancelot Brown map of Fenstanton made in1777. There do not seem to be any further records of this mill and it wasmost probably dismantled long before the start of the twentieth century.Mill Number 5:Mill number five stood on the only sharp bend on Low Road. I am unable toidentify any of its owners, or when it was demolished. I believe the followingphotographs are correct, based on the image on the right of the pictureshown last month. From the The Ipswich Journal 4th May 1799“On Monday, the wife of William Fuller of Fenstanton, on her way to St Ivesmarket, went into a windmill for shelter from a violent shower of rain and onleaving the mill the sails unfortunately struck her over the head and killed heron the spot. She left five children to lament her loss”.From Fenstanton Parish Buriel Records;1st May 1799, Elizabeth Fuller wife of William Fuller, killed by a mill-sail inStanton field. Finally, Mill Number 6:This mill was on the other side of Fenstanton village bordering on FenDrayton at Mill Road.Continued next page24

Fenstanton and its Windmills: Part 1:.Continued fromlast monthFrom the Cambridge Independent Press - Friday 16 May 1919:FENSTANTON: Another Landmark Gone.“The ancient post-mill built of wood and with a thatched roof, between FenDrayton and Fenstanton is now being demolished. It lost its sails some yearsago and has not been used for some time. Of late years it has not been inuse. It lost its sails in a storm one year ago and has sustained other damagefrom wind and weather at various times. In days long past it belonged to thelate Mr. Hardy, of Fenstanton. Its present owner is Mr. J. Evison. Within thelast century all of its tenants had little success”.Robert Hardy lived in Fenstanton High Street and owned the mill for at leastthirty years. John Evison was born in 1845 in Enderby in Lincolnshire. At thetime of the 1901 census he was living in Lincolnshire, so he must havepurchased the Fen Drayton farm shortly before demolishing the mill. This was the last of the eight windmills that once stood in Fenstanton villagefor over eight hundred years. Maps of various dates show this mill to be sitedin different positions on Mill Road. There is nothing to be seen today althoughit is possible that it was opposite the house known as Mill House, where thereis a driveway into an empty field.john.deeks@ntlworld.comFen Drayton Tennis ClubWe are a friendly club and welcome players from Fen Drayton, Fenstanton,Hilton and other local villages. We have two outside courts with easy access from Fen Drayton Village Hallwhere free parking is available. We welcome players of all levels and age and are open to new members.Professional coaching is available. We also offer pay and play bookings for non-members.For full details of membership and ‘pay and play” and for the latest information on use of the courts please visit our website:www.fendraytontc.co.uk25

Boris finally gave a thumbs up to grassroots football!I was delighted to hear Boris reveal the road map to us coming out of lockdown, it has been a long and hard winter for all of us and to finally see lightat the end of the tunnel was a big relief. As part of the phase 1 of easinglock down grass roots football could finally start up again, and Iknow how much this meant to all of our players, coaches, helpers and parents, it was sogood to see the players back, taking in the fresh air, running about with their friends andplaying a sport they love so much!.Our club is thriving, we now have 11 teams and over 140 players ranging from 5 through toadults, and we are so grateful to the group of fantastic volunteers who help run the club andcoach the teams, we couldn’t do it without your dedication and continued support, togetherwith the financial support we have had from local fund raising, sponsorship and the ParishCouncil, this too has been overwhelming. It costs a great deal to run such a big club andwithout this financial support we simply wouldn't exist. The rapid growth of the club hasmeant we have needed to expand and we are appreciative to Chris Behagg who is kindlyrenting us the old cricket pitch, meaning our U11,12 & 13's now have a home pitch locatedclose to our facilities at Hall Green Lane.So the future is bright and we have weathered the storm of COVID, we continue toattract new players and hope to grow further over the coming years. With this in mind weneed further investment to ensure our facilities meet the high standard of welfare for ourplayers and to create a sporting environment which is available to the whole village. Wehave big aspirations and would love to one day have a fully secured site that has amplechanging facilities and a social bar/cafe area that is accessible to all groups within thecommunity. You may be reading this and thinking how can I get involved? Well we would love to hearfrom you if you can help in any way. Whether you're in the construction industry, experienced in planning or quite simply just want to support us, we would love to hear fromyou. For example we know there is grant money available but this takes dedication and timeto apply and as a committee we are at times fully stretched with just running the club so wewould welcome additional support and expertise. It’s a well-known fact Sport can pull a community together in so many ways as well asproviding much needed fitness and wellbeing. I feel genuinely excited to be leading our cluband the ambitious challenge to create an amazing setting for all our players and somethingthat the village can be proud of and benefit from. Please do get in touch if you think you can help or indeed share any views you have inmaking our club and theenvironment around it evenbetter. Thanks for yourcontinued support and staysafe.Steve MannChairman ofFenstanton FCfenstantonfootball@outlook.com26

New Community Garden in HiltonAs we come out of all the covid restrictions, a group of us in Hilton have beenlooking at ways we canGROW communityGROW feelings of wellbeing by being outside in the fresh airGROW a greener environmentAnd of courseGROW flowers, vegetables, and fruit for everyone to enjoy. The first hurdle was to find a plot of land, and we have very kindly beingoffered a plot by Dr Randall at Monach Farm.We have applied for some grants to get money to support this project and arevery hopeful that some will be forthcoming. We will particularly need fencing toprotect the land from rabbits and Muntjac deer and tools, so if any business orindividual would like to donate any that would be great. We will be inviting all Hilton residents to be part of this project, so if you wouldlike to dig, plant, prune or pick do get in touch with Heather at23heatherc@gmail.com37
